SUMMER EDITIONJUNE 2015

Greetings from the President                          Summer, 2015Dear Quilters and Friends,

The danger of frost has finally past and it's safe to take your Winter quilt off the bed and get out your Spring or Summer quilt!  I've always loved the tradition of different quilts for different seasons.  A big "well done" to members of the Webster Quilt Guild and Barb Miller, Certified Instructor of the Judi Niemeyer technique and QCNYS Teacher Member  for an entertaining, delightful Spring meeting.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in Watkins Glen for the QCNYS Summer meeting on June 17th! We're excited about a few announcements coming your way at the meeting.  If you haven't sent in your registration form, you can visit www.qcnys.org to print it and send it in now! Be sure to let those in your organization or Guild know about the two discussion groups so those interested can attend and share with others.

Discussion Group #1 - Social Media & Networking:  Let's talk about mailing lists, newsletters, Facebook, blogs, websites and more - The best ways to use these tools to communicate with other quilters, get the word out about quilt shows, raffle quilts and other activities and info.  Ann Hawkins has over 20 years experience, she looks forward to sharing tips and tricks of the trade.    Discussion Group #2 - National Teachers:  Wondered the best way to find, hire and share the resources of a National Teacher? Bobbi Beckhorn will be leading this discussion group.  She has many successful years of experience in this area and many helpful hints and tips!

A couple of weeks ago the Nominating Committee sent out a notice asking all of you to talk to people in your guild or organization about the position of QCNYS Vice President for 2016-2017.  This is a great opportunity to work with a group of energetic, fun women to continue the networking and education of quilters throughout the State of New York.  We only meet eight times a year to discuss and plan activities

In the past QCNYS held a quilt raffle during the Holiday Show and those proceeds went to the general fund. The current plan is different. The board decided in 2014 that a grant that will enable a guild to hire a quilt educator would be a nice addition to the individual grants traditionally offered. Given that the annual QCNYS income would not cover that extra expense, the decision was made to raffle a quilt.  This process started in December 2014 with Liz Scott issuing eighteen "New York Beauty" patterns to guilds that requested one; these are due no later than the June 2015 meeting. The response has been huge (thank you one and all) and an additional group of patterns were printed. The resulting blocks will be assembled and quilted over the summer with the finished quilt presented at the September 2015 meeting. Guilds must participate in the process to be eligible for the grant. There are several ways to participate and several guilds have already volunteered - provide a block, assist in assembly, provide backing, provide binding, quilting, make a label and (most importantly) actively sell tickets. The amount of tickets sold will have a large impact on the amount and number of guild grants.Ticket sales will begin in September 2015 and end with the March 2016 QCNYS meeting. The drawing for the quilt will be held at that meeting as will a drawing amongst participating guilds for any extra NYB blocks. The grant applications will be accepted following the drawing and the grant(s) made in June 2016. This will be a lottery drawing amongst the participating guilds only. We would like the quilt to travel during that time to the various sections of the state and would like one person in each area to take the responsibility to see that member guilds in the area can have the quilt at a meeting or other event to sell tickets. I will have the quilt in the Rochester area during the month of September but since the unveiling isn't

until the third week in September, we may need it to come back to the area. Jackie Grozkowski from the Amherst Guild has requested the quilt for the month of October. There are a lot of guilds in the Buffalo area so we hope all the guilds in the Buffalo area will take the opportunity to sell tickets while it is in their area. The rest of the schedule is open at this time. If you would be willing to take the responsibility of getting the quilt to the guilds in your area or have a venue where you would like to display it for the purpose of selling tickets, please contact:Pamela Langdon/ 585 349-5596 / [email protected]       INFORMATION COMMITTEE REPORT
