LALIQUE est un mythe, emblématique d’un artisanat qui force le respect. Avec le temps, le nom est devenu le symbole puissant d’un savoir-faire unique, le synonyme d’une exigence, un style caractérisé par la maîtrise du contraste du cristal clair et satiné. Un riche héritage culturel et artistique, éternellement précieux, qui vit dans le dynamisme de son époque et s’y inscrit avec modernité. Aujourd’hui, LALIQUE est entrée dans une nouvelle phase de développement et de modernisation. Ainsi, j’ai décidé de faire appel à des designers extérieurs, en gardant la plus grande admiration et le plus grand respect pour l’œuvre de René Lalique et ce qu’il a apporté dans le domaine de la création. Ouvrir cette cristallerie à de nouveaux artistes, c’est offrir un savoir-faire exceptionnel à un nouveau regard, un nouveau souffle créatif. C’est ainsi que je me suis adressé à Zaha Hadid pour créer la collection Crystal Architecture : deux vases aux lignes fluides, organiques, en mouvement, superbement révélées par le cristal et magnifiées par le contraste des finitions satinées et repolies, emblématiques de LALIQUE. Déclinée en cristal incolore ou noir, cette collection est née de la passion du beau, la recherche de l’excellence, la volonté de conjuguer l’expertise de nos maîtres-verriers et la créativité et le talent rare d’une architecte et designer de renommée mondiale. A travers ces œuvres exceptionnelles en édition numérotée et signée, LALIQUE propose une nouvelle approche de la matière, un nouveau vocabulaire formel, une nouvelle vision.

LALIQUE is a legend, symbolic of craftsmanship that commands respect and admiration. Over the years, LALIQUE has become more than just a name; it has become a powerful icon of exceptional know-how, a synonym for excellence, and a style characterized by the mastery of contrast. Drawing on its rich cultural and artistic heritage, its timeless and precious qualities, the brand preserves the energy and insouciance of its heyday while adapting to modern-day tastes. Today, LALIQUE has entered a new phase of development and modernization. As a result, I have decided to make the unique skills of our crystal makers available to contemporary designers, while keeping the greatest admiration and respect for René Lalique’s work and his tremendous creative spirit. Opening this crystal glasswork to new artists allows its exceptional know-how to be interpreted with new eyes and with a fresh creative inspiration. As part of this new initiative, I have asked Zaha Hadid to design the Crystal Architecture collection. It is composed of two vases: their innate fluid lines which seem to have a life of their own are superbly highlighted by clear or black crystal. Enhancing the overall effect are those contrasting satin and polished finishes that are the epitome of LALIQUE. This collection was born of a passion for beauty, the search for excellence, and the will to combine the expertise of our master glassmakers with the great creativity and rare talent of a world-famous architect and designer. Through these exceptional masterpieces in a signed and numbered edition, LALIQUE presents a fresh approach to its material, a new formal vocabulary, a new vision.

Zaha Hadid

You have designed two vases for LALIQUE. How did this project come about?

I have always had a passion for glass and crystal, and started collecting pieces at an early age in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. I was delighted to be asked by LALIQUE to collaborate as we have recently been exploring the specific properties of glass and its behavioural characteristics.

What does LALIQUE mean to you?

LALIQUE is synonymous with elegant, fluid designs that are innovative and timeless, yet do not compromise the integrity of the medium - or the craftsmanship of its production. Each piece is a true celebration of the unique properties of crystal.

Maurice Rostand called René Lalique “the Rodin of trans-parencies”. Transparency and lightness are also attributes of your designs. Do you see a connection?

Absolutely - the architectural language we have developed is a manifesto of our experimentation and research into fluidity and transparency. We work hard to instil these qualities in our work. With the formal dynamic of a fluid mass, we are able to emphasise the continuous nature of each piece and the smooth evolution of the designs.

In the past you have created vases in stainless steel, now in crystal. What is your sense of the two materials?

Both materials actually have similar characteristics and experiences, even though they don’t at first look similar. While both reflect, crystal is particularly fascinating as its refractive qualities play with light and distortion.

Your designs are extremely contemporary and avant- garde. Where do you take your inspiration from?

We often look at nature’s systems when we are creating archi-tecture – at the elegance of her coherence and beauty.

Vous avez dessiné deux vases pour LALIQUE. Comment ce projet est-il né ?

Le verre et le cristal m’ont toujours séduite. Dans ma jeunesse, je collectionnais des pièces de toutes formes, tailles et couleurs. J’étais ravie que LALIQUE me propose une collaboration car nous venions tout juste de nous pencher sur les propriétés et les réactions du verre.

Que signifie LALIQUE pour vous ?

LALIQUE est synonyme d’élégance, de lignes fluides à la fois novatrices et atemporelles qui ne compromettent ni l’intégrité du matériau ni la « patte » artisanale. Chaque pièce célèbre les propriétés uniques du cristal.

Maurice Rostand appelait René Lalique le « Rodin des transparences ». La légèreté et la transparence sont aussi des attributs de vos dessins. Voyez-vous un lien ?

Absolument. Le langage architectural que nous avons développé est un manifeste de notre pratique et recherche dans la fluidité et la transparence. Nous travaillons dur afin d’instiller ces qualités dans nos travaux. Grâce à la dynamique formelle d’une masse fluide, nous pouvons souligner la nature continue de chaque création et l’évolution harmonieuse du dessin.

Vous avez naguère créé des vases en inox, aujourd’hui en cristal. Quelle est votre perception de ces deux matériaux ?

Ils présentent des caractéristiques et des sensations comparables, bien qu’ils ne soient en rien similaires à première vue. Si les deux sont réfléchissants, le cristal est particulière-ment fascinant car ses qualités de réfraction jouent avec la lumière et la distorsion.

Vos lignes sont extrêmement contemporaines et avant- gardistes. Quelle est votre inspiration ?

Lorsque nous créons de l’architecture, nous observons souvent les systèmes d’organisation de la nature, l’élégance de sa cohésion et de sa beauté.

A sensory and tactile experience through sensual curves, the particular velvety touch of a satin finish, and a design both contemporary and timeless.

LALIQUE has attained excellence in fashioning plain crystal, but also black crystal, which is very complex and difficult to work. Pushed back within its limits, the material offers up an enchanting vision in black crystal of spectacular depth.

The Manifesto vase by Zaha Hadid reflects this language through crystal. It displays innate, fluid lines which seem to have a life of their own. Superbly displayed in crystal, they are enhanced by the contrasting satin and polished finishes characteristic of LALIQUE.

Zaha Hadid explains how she follows the example of René Lalique, a fervent admirer of the natural world: “We often observe nature in order to create an architectural work. The elegance, cohesion and beauty of the natural world are a genuine source of inspiration to us.”

Manifesto by Zaha Hadid is an architectural work in crystal. The numbered edition is available either in clear crystal – a majestic sculpture of light – or in black, which lends mysterious depth to this work of contemporary art.

Observatrice de la nature, Zaha Hadid donne à l’architecture la complexité et la beauté des formes naturelles en se servant d’un langage formel dérivé du mouvement de l’eau ou de l’air.

Mondialement reconnue pour son approche déconstructiviste et ses lignes fluides qui donnent une impression de légèreté à ses créations, elle imagine pour LALIQUE le vase Visio. Comme une tour de cristal, les lignes montent vers le ciel dans un mouvement presque infini.

Le cristal satiné et repoli, emblématique de LALIQUE, se prête volontiers à cet exercice de style. Illuminé par l’éclat du cristal incolore ou sublimé par la profondeur mystérieuse du cristal noir, ce vase en édition numérotée est une œuvre magistrale.

As a close observer of the natural world, Zaha Hadid instils the complexity and beauty of natural forms into her architec-ture. She uses a formal language derived from running water or currents of air.

Zaha Hadid is renowned the world over for her deconstructivist approach and for the fluid lines which lend an impression of lightness to her creations. Now she has devised the Visio vase for LALIQUE. Like a crystal tower, the vase’s lines ascend heavenward in almost infinite movement.

Satin-finished and polished crystal, both emblematic of LALIQUE, perfectly suit this essay in style. Illuminated by the brilliance of the clear crystal or sublimated by the deep mystery of black crystal, this vase, in a numbered edition, is a tour de force.

Zaha Hadid, fondatrice de Zaha Hadid Architects, a remporté en 2004 le prix Pritzker d’architecture (considéré comme le Prix Nobel de la discipline) ; son œuvre construite, théorique et universitaire lui a valu une réputation d’envergure interna-tionale. Ses projets dynamiques et innovants se fondent sur plus de trois décennies d’expérimentation et de recherche révolutionnaires aux croisées de l’urbanisme, de l’architecture et du design.

Née à Bagdad en Irak en 1950, Zaha Hadid a étudié les mathématiques à l’Université Américaine de Beyrouth avant de s’installer à Londres en 1972 pour étudier à l’Association d’Architecture (AA), où elle a reçu le Prix du Diplôme en 1977, et a fondé Zaha Hadid Architects en 1979.

Zaha Hadid s’intéresse à l’interface rigoureuse entre l’architec-ture, le paysage et la géologie, car elle intègre dans sa pratique la topographie naturelle et les systèmes conçus par l’homme, processus qui engendre souvent des formes architecturales inattendues et dynamiques.

Zaha Hadid, founder of Zaha Hadid Architects, was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize (considered to be the Nobel Prize of architecture) in 2004 and is internationally known for her built, theoretical and academic work. Each of her dynamic and pioneering projects builds on over thirty years of exploration and research in the interrelated fields of urbanism, architecture and design.

Born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1950, Zaha Hadid studied mathematics at the American University of Beirut before moving to London in 1972 to attend the Architectural Associa-tion (AA) School where she was awarded the Diploma Prize in 1977. She founded Zaha Hadid Architects in 1979.

Zaha Hadid’s interest lies in the rigorous interface between architecture, landscape, and geology as her practice integrates natural topography and human-made systems, leading to innovation with new technologies.

Zaha Hadid Architects continues to be a global leader in pioneering research and design investigation.

Zaha Hadid Architects’ work was the subject of critically- acclaimed exhibitions at New York’s Solomon R. Guggen-heim Museum in 2006, London’s Design Museum in 2007, the Palazzo della Ragione, Padua, Italy in 2009, the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2011 and the Danish Architecture Centre in 2013.

L’UNESCO l’a nommée « Artiste pour la Paix », la République Française lui a remis l’insigne de Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres en recon-naissance de ses services rendus à l’architecture, et TIME magazine l’a inclue dans sa liste des « 100 personnes les plus influentes du monde ». En 2012, Zaha Hadid a été faite Dame Commandeur de l’Ordre de l’Empire britannique par la Reine Elizabeth II.

Zaha Hadid’s outstanding contribution to the architectural profession is acknowledged by the most world’s most respected institutions including the Forbes List of the World’s Most Powerful Women and the Japan Art Association presenting her with the ‘Praemium Imperiale’.
