SAS connected expansion enclosures
No interconnection of SAS chains between
control enclosures as control enclosures communicate via FC and must use all 8 FC ports on enclosures
An I/O Group is a control enclosure and its associated SAS attached expansion enclosures
Clustered system can consist of 2-4 I/O Groups
Scale capacity/throughput 4x
– Up to 1.4PB raw capacity or 960 drives in two 42U racks
Non-disruptive upgrades
– From smallest to largest configurations
– Purchase hardware only when you need it
• No extra feature to order and no extra charge for a clustered system
• Configure one system using USB stick and then add second using GUI

Por que V7000 em Cluster?
Cluster proporciona crescer linearmente em 1) capacidade e 2) performance
– Adicionando expansion enclosures capacity
– Adicionando control enclosure performance

Power Supply Unit (PSU)
Dual PSU operation providing full redundancy
Control Enclosure PSU w/battery – 764watt
Storwize V7000 requires battery backup to save node metadata and writes not destaged to disk in the event of power failure to both PSUs
The battery can save the metadata and any writes in cache to the internal boot flash drive twice without a recharge– A drained battery should recharge to 98% in 1 hour
– Storwize V7000 will not boot up unless batteries have enough capacity to perform one emergency shutdown
Two fans per PSU– Even if PSU fails the fans will operate via power from other PSU
across the midplane
Expansion Enclosure PSU – 580 watt– This PSU is a different model than the control enclosure PSU and
does not contain a battery

Conectividade entre Control e Expansion enclosures
SAS Chain 1SAS Chain 2
Drives in Control Enclosure are part of SAS Chain 2
Supported but now we would have 3 enclosures on SAS Chain 2 and only one on SAS Chain 1
Since each SAS Chain currently has only one enclosure we could add this second
expansion enclosure to either Chain

Striped Volume– Allocates one extent in turn from each MDisk in the storage pool.
– Volume data is striped throughout the Managed Disks of the Storage Pool
24
Image mode– Volume has a direct relationship with one MDisk.
– Used to migrate existing data into and out of the clustered system
Sequencial mode– Extents are allocated one after the other from one MDisk
to the next MDisk

Last two presets allow you to put copies in different storage pools if multiple pools exist already
A compressed volume is “a kind of” Thin Provisioning– Only uses physical storage to store the compressed version of the volume– Can be on back-end external controller storage.

SVC/V7000 Thin Provisioning – ‘zero detection’
– Uso do recurso 'Volume Mirroring'

5. Um 'write I/O' grava em ambas cópias
6. Um 'read I/O' lê de uma só cópia

Preset – Snapshot
Use case:– The user doesn't anticipate a large number of changes being made to the source volume or target volume– The user needs a copy of the volume with minimal impact to the source and minimal capacity consumed– Multiple snapshots may be taken as business needs dictate.– Snapshots are useful for providing protection against data corruption for example– Snapshots do not copy all the data from the source to the target
♦ Consumes little capacity– Do not provide protection in the event of failures affecting the source volume.
Running command:– svctask mkvdisk -autoexpand -iogrp io_grp0 -mdiskgrp mdiskgrp0 -name test_1_01 -rsize 0% -size 21474836480 -unit b– svctask mkfcmap -cleanrate 0 -copyrate 0 -source test_1 -target test_1_01– Note: Source and target volumes from same storage pool

Preset – Clone
Use case:– The user wants a copy of the volume that can modify without impacting the original– Once the clone is established, there is no expectation that it will be refreshed– Clones do copy all the data from the source to the target– Target consumes same capacity as source– Target is not dependant on the source once copy is complete– If the source is Thin provisioned, then the target will be auto-created as Thin provisioned.
Running command:– svctask mkvdisk -iogrp io_grp0 -mdiskgrp mdiskgrp0 -name test_1_01 -size 21474836480 -unit b– svctask mkfcmap -autodelete -cleanrate 50 -copyrate 50 -source test_1 -target test_1_01– Note: Source and target volumes from same storage pool

Preset – Backup
Use case:– The user wants to create a copy of the volume that can be used as a backup– Used in the event that the source becomes unavailable– The user plans to periodically update the secondary copy– The user doesn't want the overhead of creating a completely new copy each time– The user wants incremental capabilities utilized to copy the deltas– Incremental are faster then full copy– Helps reduce the window where the new backup is not yet fully effective– If the source volume is Thin provisioned, then the target will be auto-created as Thin provisioned.– Another use case - create and periodically refresh an independent copy of the data to have intensive I/O (e.g. data
mining) without impacting source volume performance.
Running commands:– svctask mkvdisk -iogrp io_grp0 -mdiskgrp mdiskgrp0 -name test_1_01 -size 21474836480 -unit b– svctask mkfcmap -cleanrate 50 -copyrate 50 -incremental -source test_1 -target test_1_01

Características da funcionalidade Compressão de Dados
Can be used with active primary data
– High performance compression supports workloads off-limits to other alternatives
– Significantly expands candidate data for compression
– Greater compression benefits through use on more types of data
Operates immediately and is easy to manage
– No need to schedule periods to run post-process compression
– Eliminates need to reserve space for uncompressed data waiting post-processing
Supports all Storwize V7000 storage
– Internal or externally virtualized storage
– Can significantly enhance value of existing storage assets
Uses same proven Random-Access Compression Engine (RACE) as IBM RTC Appliances– Delivers similar levels of compression

Como é implementado um volume comprimido?
A compressed volume is a third type of volume
– Regular (fully allocated)
– Thin Provisioned
– Compressed
A compressed volume is “a kind of” Thin Provisioning
– Only uses physical storage to store the compressed version of the volume
– Can be on back-end external controller storage.
Deployed on V7000 and SVC on CF8 and CG8 clusters
Maximum of 200 compressed volume copies per IO group
Specified at creation of the volume copy
– No conversion in place
A volume can be converted via Volume Mirroring

Engine™
Compression operates via RACE running in a controlled binary executable
Below CA and copy services so can automatically benefit from compression.
Sits parallel to Think Provisioning, acts in coordination.
TP provides the space efficiency on disk by allocating only what RACE requires.
Back-end can be internal or external interface to storage.

Competitive LandscapeV7000 Real-time Compression
NetApp in-line Compression
EMC VNX/Clariion Compression
Scope • Suitable for all compressible workloads
• Excels in enterprise applications such as – database, email, virtualization workloads
• Not suitable for primary storage workloads
• Databases, email, and virtualization workloads compress using post-process only
• Positioned for non-primary workloads
• In fact it can only be used with archive or dormant data
Efficiency • Up to 5:1 (80% savings)• Consistent compression over time• ALL data in a volume is always
compressed• Data is always fully optimized
• Up to 4:1 (75% savings)• Data grows over time• Practically need to allocate space
for original data size• Wasted blocks can get locked in
snapshots for a long time
• Up to 2:1 (50% savings)• Data grows over time• EMC recommends sizing
compressed devices as original data size
Architecture • Purpose built for enterprise applications and random access I/O patterns
• Every write I/O gets compressed in Real-time
• No post-process
• Initial compression is in-line• ‘Partial updates’ (i.e. random-
access updates) to compressed data are not compressed in-line but rather in post-process
• Post-process is mandatory for ALL workloads
• Completely post-process• Compression is a low-
priority task in the system; in busy environments it may never be able to run
• Very slow performance
Transparency • Compressed volumes are just a new type of volume
• No change in process• No change to data protection
• Requires changing data-protection procedures
• Snapshot administration becomes very challenging
• Huge administration overhead
• Huge administration overhead
• Post process compression is SO slow – it might never complete compressing the data
Performance • No application performance impact
• Comes at a huge performance cost• Increases CPU utilization by 30%• Reduces throughput by 20%
• Post-process compression severely impacts performance
IBM System Storage

Compression Implementation Guidelines
Compression performance –– Performance of thin provisioned volumes (supported by the same number of HDDs) with and without compression is roughly
equivalent
Which workloads are good candidates for compression– More than 45% savings – highly recommend to compress
– Between 25-45% savings – recommend evaluating workload with compression
– Less than 25% savings – recommend avoiding compression
Common workloads suitable for compression– Databases(OLTP/DW) – DB2, Oracle, MS-SQL, etc.
– Applications based on databases – SAP, Oracle Applications, etc.
– Server Virtualization – KVM, VMware, Hyper-V, etc.
– Email systems – Notes, MS-Exchange, etc.
– Other compressible workloads – engineering, seismic, collaboration, etc.
Common workloads NOT suitable for compression– Workloads using pre-compressed data types such as video, images, audio, etc.
– Workloads using encrypted data
– Heavy sequential write oriented workloads
– Other workloads using incompressible data or data with low compression rate
