Chamo-me Armando Vuvu
Kimbamba, nasci no dia 23 de
Dezembro de 1988 no hospital
Augusto Ngangula na cidade
de Luanda, na terra da
profetisa Kimpa Vita.
galinhas.

Life StoryMy name is Armando Vuvu Kimbamba, I was born in the 23rd of December 1988 at the Augusto Ngangula Hospital in the city of Luanda, the land of the prophetess Kimpa Vita. For my mother it was a moment of joy since I was her 5th son. What she always wished for me was that I would grow up to be happy, hardworking and that I had good health throughout my life.
I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers, and I was born in the middle of the civil war which lasted 27 years and maybe because of this, my childhood memories are not the best. I grew up in the town of São Paulo de Luanda. These were difficult times, and one had to pay to be able to attend school. The only way to pay for my schooling was to sell cakes. I used to make the cake dough myself at night and in the morning and when I woke up I had to prepare the fire along with my cousin. Besides this, I also raised chicken.
The school of teacher Lukynha was 10 meters away from my uncle’s house, but I didn’t like to go to school nor did I like the teacher. You see, one could only go into the classroom if one had the homework, and as I never did get to do my homework I was always being punished! The punishment was not light: we were made to kneel with our arms stretched open like Jesus Christ, with two stones on our arms, one in each hand. The teacher always had with him a small whip and if you let one of the stones drop, or if you couldn’t remain any longer with your arms outstretched you were whipped.
I didn’t have time to play football with my father,to walk with him or to sit on his lap all that much. He came to work in Portugal when I was 4 years old.
We stayed behind with our mother but it was as if time had flown by. My mother then had to go to Portugal too; I

ela ofereceu-me um pequeno piano, e ainda hoje lembro perfeitamente a música
daquele piano.
dentro do cinema.

The six of us became separated: I, my oldest sister, my youngest sister and my middle brother went on to live with my uncle. My older brother and my other sister went to live with my aunt in down town Luanda and so we only saw each other during the holidays.
I can’t say I didn’t have a childhood. Like other children, I was happy playing games: we played “garrafinha”, “bica bidon”, we made kites, we used to play in the rain when it rained which was huge entertainment, we’d run from one end of the town to the other but never got tired. I also can’t forget the old times in the Luanda cinema, the seats were made of stone, the screen consisted of a little television with a video cassette, and all films containing fights were great, and even without popcorn there was always some delicious fried fish on bread which we loved to eat at the cinema.

águas do Atlântico.
apostas é no turismo.

SHIP CEMETERY IN ANGOLA
Between 1961 and 2002, Angola lived through two terrible wars. During these years many ships were abandoned in Luanda and towed to Santiago beach. Today, this huge ship cemetery has become a meeting place for bathers who are able to enjoy this exotic landscape set in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
To get to the ship cemetery it is useful to own a 4x4 vehicle and the driver is cautioned when he reaches the waterfront, so he doesn’t collide with the ships that rest on the sand.
Angola is trying to modernize since the end of the war in 2002, and one of the areas worth exploiting is tourism. Besides the historical and cultural wealth, the country is filled with natural beauty of the African Savannah, lush forests and a desert zone. For someone who likes the unexpected, a ship cemetery is very original.

lugares do mundo.
quadrado, Para quem depende do mercado, ele é a própria vida. "O Roque

Roque Santeiro, a chaotic market in the heart of Luanda (Angola)
In the alleys you can find everything that exists and can be marketed. Screws, sex, cigarettes, bicycles, electronic equipment, dollars, euros, films, CDs and pirated DVDs, French perfume, scotch whiskey, Italian suits, spare parts for all cars, coffins made on the spot, legumes and vegetables straight from the garden, fresh fish from the Atlantic, ox meat, pork, game, chicken, sports material, Brazilian clothes and the latest fashion from the nine o’clock novella, fashion items from Europe and the United States, school books e medication donated from foreign governments to be distributed free of charge, building materials, hair treatment products and anything you can imagine. There is an endless supply of products and services available to every costumer. And it’s speed of delivery is fast, faster than any department store in the world, even the virtual world. And if what you are looking for can’t be found at the Roque, then it is because it does not exist.
Free market is an appropriate name for other places in the world as well as Roque. It’s ironic for a country that still has a hammer and sickle on its flag. Situated in Sambizanga the market spreads through a one square kilometer area. For those who depend on the market, it is life itself. “Roque has become a way of living, not just of selling”.

meu pai me ajudou a superar as dificuldades, ajudando-me sempre a fazer os

class was a good one, my first teacher was called Ana Isabel Primavera, I liked her a lot because she helped me and my class mates a lot also. My father also helped me get over my challenges and always helped me with the homework.
During my schooling at the Apelação School we had the privilege of being able to visit several historical monuments: the Tower of Belém, the Navy Museum, the Planetarium,…and we also had swimming lessons.
Games were organized between other classes and these were always great fun. I love to wrestle it was a way of showing my strength but at the same time to be able to defend the weaker ones, the ones that were bullied and would cry in the corridors.
ESCOLA BÁSICA INTEGRADA DA APELAÇÃO
After I finished 4th grade, I had to “move up” and landed in a very complicated class, the worst of the whole school.
The pupils sometimes hit the teachers, the school even got mentioned on television as the worst school in the country. The journalist and commentators debated this issue at length on television, but frankly, I feel these debates didn’t have much of a result. The pupils continued to fight in the first weeks of classes, to show each other who was boss.

Ainda hoje me lembro.

Then, during Carnival, there was an incentive for all the honor students to go on a trip ; (well behaved students with good grades). When in the 2nd year I went to see my grades and saw that my name was in the honors roll, I felt that that was the happiest day at school ever. I was happy! My brother and my sisters were also part of this group and it was great fun going on a student trip with them too. I still remember it today. (I think this will have been the last student’s trip organized by the school because the following year the money had to be used to replace the windows that the pupils broke).
My classmate Nilton and I were always very well behaved, we had good marks we respected our classmates as well as our teachers e auxiliary staff. We took part in lots of activities with the school, we went on school tournaments (basketball, football, badminton and cross country races).
On St Valentin’s day we had a box that doubled as a postbox to whoever wanted to write to their boy friend or girl friend (if you didn’t have one, you could write to a friend).

partir juntos, ainda melhor!
final do mês, poder comprar o meu passe. Este ano tive mais uma boa surpresa
na Escola. Logo no início do ano, foi-nos apresentado o projeto Grundtvig “the
power of live stories” e fomos convidados a fazer parte deste projeto Europeu,
novas culturas e outros povos.

Another Project that I haven’t forgotten was the Citizenship Club where we all went on a trip to Ota and saw films according to the theme “Together for a better world”.
As Miguel Torga taught us, it is more important to leave than to arrive and if one can add something more, then if we could leave together, the better it will be.
ESCOLA SECUNDÁRIA MARQUÊS DE POMBALBy the time I was 23 years old, I had to deal with my documentation problems. I tried to enroll in two schools near my home but this was not possible. I had to have all my documentation in order to be able to continue schooling. My father had to find out the necessary information in several organizations so that I could get the needed documents. My father went to the Immigrant Aid Office to ask for assistance and it was this Office that sent me to the Marquês de Pombal School. Today I am very grateful for the opportunity this school has given me because even without all the documents ready, I was still able to register at the school. Today I am part of this great school, and my colleagues are part of my motivation.
Each day I try to give my best so as to continue to go to school. It is a way of rewarding my mother since she is the one who pays my bus pass every month and I don’t want to let her down. I want to get to the end of the year and receive my certificate.
This will be the best way to make up for her daily sacrifice in being able to buy me my bus past every month. This year I had another good surprise at school. At the start of the year we were introduced to the Grundtvig project “the power of live stories” and we were invited to take part in this European project where Romenia, Turquey, Belgium, Northern Ireland

precisamente a Alba Yulia.
avião e começámos a nossa viagem.

In December 2012, the Grundvig Project took us to Alba Yulia in Romenia.
To be able to travel in the European Union, as an Angolan citizen I had to go to the Romanian Embassy to get a visa, which wasn’t very easy for me or my colleagues. The fact that we were African didn’t help with the authorization.
The Trip
It was 7 o’clock in the morning and we were at the Lisbon airport ready for departure and so as not to be late, my uncle came with me. At 8 o’clock we got on the plane and started our journey.
I was so very happy to go to Romenia. My classmates Isabel and Danny were with me. The teachers did not let us out of their sight, and were always worried about us.

Senti-me importante e muito bem-vindo.

First day
We slept in a good hotel ****
Our teachers had to sleep in another hotel because there were not enough rooms in ours.
On the first day, we were introduced to each other and the project was presented to a large group. Before this we were received by the School headmaster and by the members of the council. I felt very important and very welcome. After an initial bit of embarrassment caused by the colour of my skin, I felt great.
I didn’t see a single African. I found that really odd. My teachers were aware of everything that we were going through and in that aspect, everything went fine. When my turn to make my presentation came, I made it in French and it went really well. I think I even managed to surprise my teachers.
I felt extremely well treated.
