Academics

T he School of Social Sciences/CPDOC offers both undergraduate andgraduate degrees in social sciences and history, as well as a variety of

continuing education programs. Students can choose from different areas ofconcentration, including politics and society, culture and society, andinternational relations.

In addition, CPDOC offers two-year Master’s Programs and a four-yearDoctoral Program in History, Politics and Culture. Faculty background andinterests include political history, international relations and global history,sociology and social thought, anthropology, political science, comparativepolitics, urban studies, research methods, public policy, social history, culturalhistory, and applied research.

Faculty members are committed to expanding ties with scholars around theworld and have established partnership agreements with several renownedinternational institutions in recent years.

In addition, CPDOC offers professional graduate programs and continuingeducation courses in Documentary Film, Cultural Production andManagement, and International Relations. All courses are offered at FGV’sheadquarters in Rio de Janeiro, as well as a select few in São Paulo.

The Center for International Relations

T he Center for International Relations at FGV, based at the School ofSocial Sciences/CPDOC, was founded in 2009 to promote and develop

research and teaching in the fields of International Relations andContemporary Global History. Since then, the Center has become a platformfor policy-oriented debate on critical global issues. The Center offers courseson the history and theory of international relations to undergraduate andgraduate students. In addition, the center supports FGV’s internationalizationtrajectory through active engagement with academic and research institutionsaround the world.

The Archival Program

C PDOC has the leading private historical archival program in Brazil,housing over 1,3 million documents, including over 200 personal

archives in a range of disciplines, including politics, economics, culturalhistory, social movements, public policy, and foreign relations. In addition,its research staff has compiled an extensive collection of oral historyinterviews that span decades.

In recent years, CPDOC has committed its resources to offer quick and easyaccess to archival materials both on and offline. This process utilizesinnovative techniques in archival management and engagement with thecommunity through public outreach.

The School of Social Sciences/CPDOC at Fundação GetulioVargas (FGV) is a Brazilian academic and research center focused on

the social sciences and history. Founded in 1973 as the Center for Researchand Documentation of Contemporary Brazilian History, CPDOC is one of theleading historical research institutes in the country, housing an extensivecollection of personal archives, oral history interviews and audiovisualsources that document Brazilian contemporary history. In the 2000s, CPDOCexpanded its scope through the creation of a higher education program topromote undergraduate and graduate studies and by 2012, the School ofSocial Sciences/CPDOC received the highest evaluation by the Ministry ofEducation in its annual national ranking.

Recognized for its commitment to the integration of history and the socialsciences, the School of Social Sciences/CPDOC offers an interdisciplinaryapproach to learning reflected through its diverse faculty profile andcurricula. Over the years, CPDOC has fostered a vibrant community ofscholars, technicians and students who collaborate on education, research,consulting and partnership work with other FGV schools and institutes.

Drawing from faculty expertise, CPDOC has recently strengthened its appliedresearch program in order to generate knowledge that provides directbenefits to individuals, groups, and the public interest on a wide range ofsocial issues. As a result, the center is recognized as a reference and a criticalresource for public and private institutions from diverse sectors.
