800 YEARS OF THE PORTUGUESE NOTARY PUBLIC PROFESSIONIn 2014, the Portuguese Notary Public profession celebrates eight centuries of existence. Almost contemporary to the foundation of Portugal, notarial practice is a witness to the life of the nation. According to the work of Prof. Bernardo Sá Nogueira, entitled Portugaliae Tabellionum Instrumenta – Documentação Notarial Portu-guesa 1214-1234 (Lisbon, Lisbon University History Center, 2005), the oldest document written by a Notary Public is dated 12 August, Tuesday, of 1214, drafted by Martim Martins, empowered to exercise his profession in Guimarães, (ANTT, Collegiate of Guimarães, bundle 6, no. 6). The Notary Public has been a witness to the most important moments of the life of citizens, throughout the history of our country, notarising, certifying their veracity and legitimacy, building immutable and timeless memories. Today, the Notary Public is a self-employed professional, trustee of the public faith, whose activity has the ultimate aim of social peace. The Portuguese Notary Public profession rises to the current challenges of speed, efficiency and rigour imposed by modern society by combining all its technical and legal know-how with the permanent technological and IT innovation in the legal field.The Portuguese Notary Association, representative body of Portuguese Notaries Public, created on 6 March 2006, has the clear and ongoing aim of moving closer to citizens and companies, through the network of Notarial Offices throughout the country, guaranteeing the security of legal trading and the protection of citizens. The priority of this professional association is to provide solutions to the new social and economic dynamics, to which Notaries Public contribute through their specialised know-how, for the growth of Portuguese society. Given the momentous historical moment that the Portuguese Notary Public profession is going through, the objective is to mark and commemorate this anniversary with a cycle of legal, social and cultural initiatives, to be undertaken over the course of the current year. Among the many highlights are the exhibition to the public of the oldest document written by a Portuguese Notary Public, the creation and projection of a film about the history of the Notary Public profession, from its beginnings until today, as well as the holding of the 3rd Congress of the Portuguese Notary Public profession, which includes both national and foreign speakers that will debate and call attention to current notarial topics, in Portugal and around the World.Just as the History of Portugal has been marked by the insignia of Notaries Public, this stamp issue pays homage to this anniversary. O Notariado Português celebra, em 2014, oito séculos de existência. Quase contemporânea da fundação de Portugal, a função notarial é testemunha da vida da nação. Conforme consagrado na obra do Prof. Doutor Bernardo Sá Nogueira, intitulada Portugaliae Tabellionum Instrumenta Documentação Notarial Portuguesa 1214-1234 (Lisboa, Centro de História da Universidade de Lisboa, 2005), o documento mais antigo escrito por um tabelião é datado de 12 de agosto, uma terça feira, do ano de 1214, manuscrito por Martim Martins, empossado para exercer o seu ofício em Guimarães (ANTT, Colegiada de Guimarães, maço 6, nº 6). O Notário tem sido testemunha dos momentos mais marcantes da vida dos cidadãos ao longo da história do nosso país, titulando, certificando a sua veracidade e legitimidade, construindo memórias inalteráveis e intemporais. Hoje, o Notário é um profissional liberal, dotado de fé pública, cuja atividade tem como fim último a paz social. Aos atuais desafios de celeridade, eficiência e rigor, impostos pela sociedade atual, o Notariado Português responde aliando todo o conhecimento técnico-jurídico, à permanente inovação tecnológica e informática jurídica. A Ordem dos Notários, órgão representativo dos Notários Portugueses, criada em 6 de março de 2006, tem como inegável e constante objetivo a aproximação aos cidadãos e às empresas, através da rede de Cartórios Notariais distribuídos por todo o país, garantindo a segurança do comércio jurídico e a proteção dos cidadãos. Esta ordem profissional tem como prioridade dar solução às novas dinâmicas sócioeconómicas, em que os Notários contribuem com as suas competências especializadas para o crescimento da sociedade portuguesa. Dada a grandeza do momento histórico que o Notariado Português está a vivenciar, pretende-se assinalar e comemorar este aniversário com um ciclo de iniciativas de carácter jurídico, social e cultural, a realizar ao longo do corrente ano. Destaca-se a exposição ao público do documento mais antigo escrito por um tabelião português, a criação e projeção de um filme sobre a história do Notariado, desde o seu início até aos dias de hoje, e ainda, a realização do III Congresso do Notariado Português, com a presença de oradores nacionais e estrangeiros que debatem e enaltecem os temas da atualidade notarial, em Portugal e no Mundo.Assim como a História de Portugal tem sido assinalada pela insígnia dos notários, a presente emissão filatélica prestigia esta efeméride. O selo português dedicado a esta magna data fá-la-á perdurar, de forma intemporal e simbólica, no imaginário coletivo.
