Divine Revelation is Passed Down to us
Through the Church We Catholics come to know God most fully through Divine
Revelation. Today I want to explain how the fullness of revela-
tion began to be passed down. The letter to the Hebrews explains
Divine Revelation better than I can. “In many and various ways
God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last
days he has spoken to us by the Son”(1:1-2, CCC 65). This is in
our creed as well, “He has spoken through the prophets.” We live
in the “last days” which are the days after Jesus sent us the Holy
Spirit and set up his Church.
At Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, the Apostles and other
disciples began to spread the message of Jesus. The Church con-
tinued to grow. The Apostles passed on the Divine Revelation
that was fulfilled in Jesus Christ’s life, death and resurrection first
orally and second through writing. We know about this through
the Acts of the Apostles, the letters of the Apostles and the histor-
ical sites around the world. The Apostles and disciples like Peter,
Philip, and Stephen told people about the forgiveness of sins
through baptism in the name of Jesus. They traveled around and
set up communities that told the story of Jesus and how he ful-
filled the sayings of the prophets. Later St. Paul, after many years
of passing on the same information orally, began to write letters
to the communities that had formed over the years.
Finally at the end of the lives of the Apostles others were instruct-
ed to write down the important parts of the life, death and resur-
rection of Jesus so that the information would not be lost. These
culminated in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. I’ll
share more next week about this continued but I want to leave
you with a quote from the end of the Gospel of John about why
he wrote his Gospel. “Now Jesus did many other signs in the
presence of his disciples which are not written in this book. But
these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the
Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you might
have life in his name”(20:30-31).

St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry Advent is nearly here. Many of us follow the custom of keeping an Advent calendar. This year we would like
to encourage everyone to try something new – an Advent Basket. Here’s how it works.
Beginning on the first day of Advent put out a basket or cardboard box. Be sure to put it in a place where you
will notice it every day. Each day during Advent place something in the box/basket that someone can use to
feed their family. This can be a non-perishable food item or a roll
of paper towels or maybe a special treat. As you collect your items,
say a prayer for the one who will use what you gather. This will
benefit you and the person in need. The idea is to fill the basket with
household items and food by the time Christmas Eve arrives. If you
have a family, you can share the responsibility of filling the basket
– assign each family member a day of their own to add to the dona-
tion.
The final act is to bring the full basket to church on Christmas Eve.
The items we collect will be used by St. Vincent de Paul Food
Pantry as the year ends and the new year begins. Lots of people
find that cupboards are getting bare at this time of year and St.
Vincent de Paul is getting more requests for help. You can help by
sacrificing a little to help a family in need.

BE AN ADVENT ANGEL TO A SEAS FAMILY! Looking for a way to support a family through prayer? Wanting to encourage your family to pray to-gether for the good of others? You can help promote community in our parish this Advent Season!
HOW CAN I HELP?
1) On November 17th &18
th, the
Parish Council will distribute Advent Angel cards. 2) Each family can fill out the back of the card. 3) Cards are dropped into the desig-nated box or are given to any Parish Council member. 4) On November 24th & 25th, each
family will draw another family’s
name from the box. The purpose is
to pray for them in secret during the
whole Advent season.
SUGGESTIONS FOR DAILY FAMILY PRAYER Each night read a Scripture from the daily readings. Gather the family to share the following:
Where did I see God today in my family, at school, at work, in the community? What did I do today to be Christ to someone? Was there anything that happened to me that I would like to talk about? How can I make tomorrow better than today? What am I most thankful for at this moment? If you have young kids in your family, make it fun for them! You could put the questions in a jar and each one could take a turn to draw a question to answer. You could ask them to suggest more questions to add to the jar. After each member of the family has done their sharing, they will pray for one another and the family that they chose.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER ADVENT?
On January 4, 2019, the feast day of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, we will have an Advent Angel Revela-
tion Day and potluck after Mass. Let’s pray for one another as we patiently wait for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. After all, “the family that prays together, stays together.”
