We moved to … Siberia

Pauline Lamond,50, and her husband Colin, 49, from Twickenham, London, havelived in Sakhalin, an island off the coast of Siberia in the far south-east of Russia, for threeyears. They have two sons, Craig,22, and Jamie,19, who live in the UK. She’s telling us about it.

Colin is a human resources manager for Shell. We were originally posted to Saudi Arabia forthree years, but because of a huge oil and gas project on Sakhalim Island off Siberia, we wereoffered the chance to come here. I was apprehensive, especially when Shell advised us to stockup on heavy-duty ski gear! The cold was a real shock. I’ll never forget stepping off the plane intotemperatures of -34ºC.

Here in Sakhalim, we live on a camp built for about 300 other Shell workers. Our house, whichcomes with the job, is wooden and very well insulated, with great heating. It has four bedroomsand a decked area. We live just outside the main town, Yuzhno. and wild with clear blue skies and glistening snow.

The camp has its own bar and restaurant, so we mostly mix with other expats. The maindifference is the cold. From November to April, it’s freezing. We cope with it wearing thermallong johns, lots of layers and thick coats. We always wear a hat and keepour ears covered incase of frostbite. The locals are used to it – men drill a hole in the frozen sea to fish, and thewomen even totter about on the ice in stiletto heels with chains on the soles! Summer is theother extreme, very hot.

In our leisure time we often have organised evenings at the camp, like Russian choirs ortraditional dance displays. I’ve got into cross-country skiing and we go skating on the lakes orwalking out on the frozen sea – amazing. Also, we go hiking in the summer.

I can’t speak Russian! I find it hard to get to grips with the language because of the differentalphabet. None of the locals speak English, so we manage in shops with gestures and handsignals. I don’t have a job, but luckily Colin gets by at work in English.

Food… there are supermarkets with imported foods from home. The meat market is quite anexperience – tons of chopped-up animals. As for eating out, the fish, crab and caviar are great, but because of the language barrier, what you order is often a lottery. And everyone drinksvodka at any time of the day or night.

What do I like here? Here you really get a sense of the changing seasons. When  the sun’s outand the snow’s glistening and you’re gliding along on skis, it’s wonderful. On the other handyou’ve got paperwork! Everything has to be signed and countersigned. Also the roads areterrible – full of potholes. Sometimes being on an island can be very bleak, so we’ll fly to Japanto shop.

We’ll probably stay here at least another year. Our sons come out to see us but we haven’t hadtoo many visitors. Even by Russian standards it’s far away – about a nine-hour flight fromMoscow – but it’s a unique experience.
