The French word “avant-garde” comes from a military expression used to name the most advanced squad, the one that marches in the front line. That physically risky position was metaphorically used to name the movements that promoted fundamental ruptures in all artistic languages, from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. This advanced squad lived a theoretical clash with European aesthetic models, while in the continent’s trenches and on the streets of many capitals people fought in other fronts of the ideological and political conflict. The regime of aesthetic and political relations in this transit between the notion of historical avant-garde and social movements is at the center of important debates in art history. This year, among hundred-year-old pieces and young artists experimenting the current possibilities for art, Festival Panorama celebrates its 22 years revisiting the connections between history, documentation, artistic and social.

On the everyday front in Rio, 22 years is also the age of many young people that are now, on the stairways and public squares, in a combative and artistic action - two processes that are impossible to separate. In a redesign of the original word, being on theavant-garde always meant also being in front of the squad, facing the combat. Like was the case in the historical context of several radical pieces that were an inspiration, document or ghost for many of the attractions in the Festival this year, the front pages of today’s newspapers have no idea of what is going on. At least this time we won’t have a one and only version of History’s live streaming.

A century ago, dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky (1890-1950) and composer Igor Stravinsky (1892-1971) created The Rite of Spring, the ballet that would later became an icon. With almost no remaining images, it’s music made for a dance that has disappeared, a specter, even when it is re-created based on documents. The Festival presents pieces that were inspired by The Rite of Spring with such different strategies as Xavier Le Roy’s and Roger Bernat’s. This journey through the 20th century continues with other artists that sought pieces or artistic movements from the avant-gardes of the first half of the last century as sources of inspiration, such as Olivia Grandville and le letristtes or Fabián Barba and Mary Wigman.

Another thread through the programme is the relation between body and the city. New horizons are openning and a feeling of belonging are being constructed. In a project devoted to creators from Rio, the Festival joins forces with Cidade das Artes and arrives in the West Zone with three new pieces conceived for the concrete architecture of the newly inaugurated cultural complex: João Saldanha, Gustavo Ciríaco and Denise Stutz.

Marcela Levi and Lucía Russo also premiere a co-production with Panorama and propose an inefficient walk against time in the busy city center between CCBB and Museu de Arte do Rio – MAR. This year, Panorama also arrives at MAR with another piece by Xavier Le Roy, “Retrospectiva”, a zigzag of his work, crated in collaboration with 12 Brazilian artists. An international seminar also takes place at the museum, gathering artists and theorists so we can tackle the notions of document, history and movement together.

The anticipated premieres of Rosas’ Cesena and Bruno Beltrão’s CRACKz and many other artists from different Brazilian states and countries, besides educational activities, coLABoratorio and Panoraminha complete the 2013 programming in venues in Centro, the South Zone and North Zone .

Just like what a group of artists lead by choreographer Lia Rodrigues imagined in 1992, Festival Panorama is once more an overview of many ideias and languages, both in and out of the stages. A fragmented overview that is free and risky, but always drawn along the lines of Rio de Janeiro’s landscape.

The Rio de Janeiro State Culture Secretariat (SEC) has been working since 2008 to spread, stimulate and strengthen the culture of Rio de Janeiro, by creating fomenting mechanisms and policies for the sector, in all of its fields, seeking to contemplate all manifestations of art and culture, from the traditional to the experimental.

Panorama is among the projects sponsored by the Secretariat, through Rio de Janeiro’s Cultural Incentive Law, and in its more than 20 years, along with other festivals, it has been crucial for the development of artists and for offering to the public the most innovative dance research and creation.

By the means of actions such as this one, we are investing in the state’s performing arts and expanding the ongoing incentive to the sector, which is also made through calls for projects, projects like Circuito Estadual das Artes and Novas Cenas and the programming of spaces like the João Caetano, Glaucio Gill and Theatro Municipal theaters.

Thus, SEC fosters artistic creation and market increase, as well as cultural integration, research of new languages and the training and development of professionals in the area.

Secretaria de Estado de Cultura

Dance is going through an excellent phase, creativity-wise. This new edition of Panorama, one of the most important dance festivals in the country is an opportunity to acknowledge and experience the effervescent moment of all dance trends. Thanks to Panorama, after 25/10, cariocas will have access to a diverse selection of the most interesting and challenging national and international dance works.

Created in 1992 by choreographer Lia Rodrigues, intending to give more visibility and access to contemporary dance in Rio, Panorama already has a history of 21 years, a period when it received more than 350 companies and about 400 thousand people. Because of the programming quality, it became known as one of the most important dance festivals in Latin America. It is also the largest event of its kind in Brazil.

Produced by Associação Cultural Panorama, with the support of the Rio de Janeiro City Culture Secretariat and in partnership with

universities, schools and organizations, the event goes beyond the shows it usually offers. Besides installations and several artistic presentations, there is also an extensive educational program throughout the year, offering lectures, debates and laboratories for children and kids from different social contexts.

The support of the Rio de Janeiro City Culture Secretariat to Panorama is part of its guidelines to foster cultural production in Rio, stimulate artistic diffusion and establish the city as a stage for large cultural events, on an ongoing basis. Congratulations to the organizers for another high quality edition of Panorama. The people of the city are proud to host this event that celebrates and spreads dance, with a high cultural and social impact.

For the first time, the Cidade das Artes Foundation of the Rio de Janeiro City Hall presents the Panorama Carioca project. Through an unprecedented artistic residency program with renowned dance artists from Rio, Cidade das Artes establishes a partnership with Festival Panorama for a special edition of its programming between October 25 and 27.

This program of creations from Rio works with the concept of site-specific art, proposing a new gaze towards the building’s architecture and its relationship with the surrounding landscape. The main focus of the occupation is to co-produce three new pieces, specially

conceived for the spaces of Cidade das Artes.

As the city’s largest dance event, Panorama Festival 2013 presents Finita, by Denise Stutz, Onde o horizonte se move, by Gustavo Ciríaco and Piquenique Urbano, by João Saldanha. Three international premieres complete the program: Rosas & graindelavoix’s Cesena, Sílvia Real and Sergio Pelágio’s Tritone, and Xavier Le Roy’s La sacre du printemps.

May dance conquer this space.

Emilio Kalil President of the Cidade das Artes Foundation

For any festival, reaching its 22nd edition is a great accomplishment. Being the biggest dance and arts of the body event in Brazil and one of the most important in Latin America makes Festival Panorama an important highlight in the country’s cultural calendar. With each edition - always with renewed strength - Panorama mobilizes the artistic community and the public around attractions that are not limited to the contemporary dance shows. By following its multidisciplinary inclination, the Festival always surprises with a diverse programming. The 2013 edition is superlative in numbers and in the way it occupies stages, cultural centers and public spaces in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Oi is proud to be alongside Festival Panorama. So is Oi Futuro. The cultural center in Flamengo

receives a part of the programming, hosting Lab-Uni 2013, a unique meeting of researchers and research groups of universities in Rio and in Brazil dedicated to investigating art focusing on the body and performance. For three days, the Laboratory will be a space for free experimentation and exchange with the public.

Oi Futuro Flamengo is also the starting point for the piece Domínio Público, by Spanish artist Roger Bernat, one of the most important names of this edition of Panorama. Domínio Público takes place in the surroundings of the cultural center, at Largo do Machado, and works as a board game, in which spectators are literally the protagonists, by responding in real time to the director’s instructions.

Enjoy the festival.

The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) acts in all different sectors of the Brazilian economy, fostering sustainable development, job creation and social inclusion.

BNDES finances projects that range from large infrastructure construction to small and micro-sized companies and also gives special attention to Brazilian culture, in all of its manifestations.

Aware that artistic manifestations are crucial for building the identity of a country, BNDES consistently invests in projects aiming to promote knowledge and value the creativity of our professionals.

Sponsoring Festival Panorama, one of the most important platforms for contemporary dance in the country, contributes to spread the work of Brazilian companies, promote debates about this artistic language and develop new audiences.

Thus, BNDES is pleased to be a partner of the project since 2008 and to contribute to bring the best of Brazilian contemporary dance to the public in a broader context, in which the most prominent international artists also perform.

Cesena Rosas’ latest production, Cesena is a counterpoint to En atendant (2010), which opened Panorama – 20 Anos, in 2011. While the per-formers danced at dusk in the previous piece, the new one announces the beginning of the day. The stage is shared among 19 dancers and singers who explore the limits of their abilities. Dancers sing and singers dance, once again in dialogue with the notes of ars subtilior, a sophisti-cated polyphonic musical style from the 14th century also developed in En atendant. In Cesena, which opens Panorama 2013, Rosas worked with graindelavoix, an art collective created by Björn Schmelzer.

Created 27 years ago, Rosas is one of the most respected and in-demand dance companies in the world. Choreographer and director of the group Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker conceived a series of impressive choreographic pieces in which she writes with movement in time and space. Her work immediately drew attention with her first piece in 1982, Fase, four movements to the hypnotic music of Steve Reich.

Since 1999, art-collective graindelavoix develops work with musicians who wish to experiment with other possibilities besides music, like per-formance and creation. It uses early music repertoires to shed light on current times.

Piquenique urbano In this co-production between Panorama and Cidade das Artes, the artists share the space with the audience in an environment that is char-acterized by the idea of entertaining and nurturing those who visit with food, music and dance in different spaces. Piquenique urbano is a site-specific piece that will occupy and explore the possibilities of the archi-tecture of the monumental Cidade das Artes building. An itinerant duo composed by Ana Paula Marques and Thiago Sancho and choreographed by João Saldanha will spread dance through the performance space.

João Saldanha is one of the most important Brazilian choreographers. He created dozens of pieces conceived with Atelier de Coreografia, the company he directs since 1986 in Rio de Janeiro and which important dance artists from Rio have been parts of. Because of his significance, the Panorama – 20 Anos edition made a retrospective of Saldanha’s work, presenting Paisagem concreta, Núcleos, Qualquer coisa a gente muda and Monocromos.

Gustavo Ciríaco | Brasil, RJ

Onde o horizonte se move A landscape brings together men and women, nature and city, history and phantasmagoria. Something nameless, sublime and, at the same time, trite permeates it. The fleeting landscape generates narratives, biographies and fables. In Old Western movies, it was common for something to be seen in the horizon, sometimes blurred by the dust and the scorching sun. These distant figures would reveal themselves little by little, taking shape and materializing as they came towards us. Nowa-days, that dimension has been lost. No one seems to come from afar. In Onde o horizonte se move, spectators search the horizon to decipher the figures blurred by the distance, like watchmen from the past.

Gustavo Ciríaco works in projects and collaborations involving archi-tecture, visual arts and spectacle. His works are guided by the context in which they take place and by the poetry of the materialness of each situation. He has taken his work to festivals and art institutions in Latin America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Denise Stutz | Brasil, RJ

Finita Finita: Portuguese feminine singular noun meaning something that has an end or a limit. Developed over the last two years, Denise Stutz’s new solo was sparked by a letter from her mother. With that inspira-tion, she used the scenic architecture of theater to elaborate the concept of loss and work with the issues of aging and absence from the perspective of dance. The creative process was posted on a blog: www.denisestutz.wordpress.com.

Denise Stutz began her dance studies in Belo Horizonte (MG). In 1975, along ten other dancers, she created Grupo Corpo. She worked with cho-reographer Lia Rodrigues as a dancer, teacher and director’s assistant. For more than ten years, she has been creating and performing her own pieces, with wide national and international circulation.

Le sacre du printemps In the year of the hundredth anniversary of The Rite of Spring, Vaslav Nijinsky’s masterpiece with music by Igor Stravinsky, Festival Panorama 2013 presents Xavier Le Roy’s solo inspired by this classic. The idea for this piece came up in 2003, when the choreographer watched a Berlin Philharmonic rehearsal conducted by Simon Rattle. Without formal knowledge of music, the French artist painstakingly studied the conductor’s performance as if it were a choreography on its own, unfold-ing questions such as: when is one conducting and when one is being conducted by this song? Le Roy also presents “Retrospectiva” in this edition of the festival.

Xavier Le Roy has worked as a choreographer since 1991. After studying molecular biology, he transitioned from science to art without abandon-ing his interests, always creating new ways to articulate them. Self-unfinished (1998) and Product of circumstances (1999) are among his best known works, along with several pieces in different formats for theaters, galleries and other venues. He has worked with important in-ternational dance artists such as Jérôme Bel and Yvonne Rainer.

“Retrospective” by Xavier Le Roy “Retrospective” is a “choreographic exhibition” in which the performers carry out actions that create different experiences about how we use, consume or produce time. Three compositions are simultaneously set in motion: the duration of each visitor in the piece; the duration of each of the 11 performers’ daily work; and the development of the actions throughout the total duration of the exhibition. “Retrospective” is based on the solos created by Xavier Le Roy between 1994 and 2010 and was created for the first time for Fundació Antoni Tàpies, in Barcelona. The Brazilian version was co-produced with the Interação and Conectividade festival, in Salvador, organized by Grupo Dimenti. The piece uses the concept of retrospective as mode of production, not as a way to show the development of an artist. Along with Le sacre du printemps, this piece completes the French choreographer’s participation in Panorama 2013.

Xavier Le Roy’s presence in Brazil is part of the Year of Germany in Brazil.

sandwalk with me In urban centers in 2013, people walk in a hurry. The gaze, the hearing, the path and the walking itself no longer exist. People leave one point to quickly reach another one. The space between these two points doesn’t arouse any interest. sandwalk with me is an excursion that sympa-thizes with swings, stumbles, the waves of the see and the carts and streetcars that crossed the center of Rio de Janeiro in the beginning of the 20th century. sandwalk with me is an experience that is literally carried by each sandwalker. Come and be a sandwalker!

Marcela Levi has been developing projects that dissolve the boundar-ies between dance and visual arts, creating a language that upsets the hierarchy between body and object: the body becomes an object and objects become body. Restless Lucía Russo moves between artistic creation, transmission and exchange processes and cultural manage-ment. In 2010, between Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, the two artists created Improvável Produções, responsible for the creation and produc-tion of Natureza Monstruosa and for the concept of the audience devel-opment project Futuros Espectadores.

CRACKz What status does a work of art still hold in the digital era? To what ex-tent processes like remixing, sampling and mash-ups are recognized as basic procedures for artistic creation? In their most recent work, Bruno Beltrão and Grupo de Rua de Niterói celebrate the process of cultural diffusion made easier by new information technologies. CRACKz (which refers to cracking protected software) is based on a series of actions randomly chosen on the Internet by the dancers. The only requirement was that they should choose videos they felt like copying, regardless of aesthetic value. After that, they spent a year rehearsing 28 clips with this “repertoire of humankind’s gestures”. CRACKz marks Bruno Bel-trão’s return to Panorama after four years.

Bruno Beltrão is one the most praised choreographers of his generation. In 2010, he received The Bessies award in New York City. With Grupo de Rua de Niterói, of which he was one of the founders in 1996, he propos-es creative and intelligent deconstructions of the world of street danc-ing. His company is now one of the most important ones in the European scene, with six pieces presented in 29 countries on their résumé. Since 2011, the company has been sponsored by Petrobras.

12 TARDES NO PARQUE | COLABORATORIO

Tardes no ParquecoLABoratorio @ EAV Parque Lage coLABoratorio is an international contemporary dance artistic residency program organized by Panorama since 2006 in different formats. In its third edition, it restates the goal to stimulate collaborative creation and cultural exchange between national and international artists.

In 2013, coLABoratorio joins the Tardes no Parque project, which has been occupying Parque Lage’s Escola de Artes Visuais (EAV) for three years. The scenic result of the researches developed during the residency will be presented there.

The selected artists worked with three advisors – choreographers Alejan-dro Ahmed (SC), Jorge Lopes Ramos (RJ) and Marcelo Evelin (PI) – at Centro Popular de Conspiração Gargarullo, in Miguel Pereira (RJ), from October 14th to 27th. The participants were selected through call-for-entries and fitted two basic criteria: motivation to work in a group and adequate availability for the purposes of the meeting.

coLABoratio is supported by Iberescena (Fundo de Ajuda para as Artes Cênicas Ibero-Americanas). The residencies were held in collaboration be-tween Associação Ponto de Cultura Espaço Panorama, Centro Coreográ-fico do Rio de Janeiro and Centro Popular de Conspiração Gargarullo.

The artists selected for coLABoratorio 2013: Joseph Patricio (Phil-lipines/Spain), Volmir Cordeiro (Brazil), Lander Patrick (Brazil), Aimé Pansera (Argentina), Tamia Guayasamin (Ecuador) and María José Cifuentes (Chile). Completing the coLABoratorio program at EAV Parque Lage, Panorama receives Lois Weaver, from England, one of the most important names in international performance art.

Advisors:

Alejandro Ahmed (SC) – Resident choreographer, artistic director and dancer of Grupo Cena 11 Cia. de Dança. His work as a choreographer started in a self-taught way, in response to a need to integrate the way he thought about the world and the dancing he was experimenting with. With Cena 11, he developed a technique – named “physical perception” – that produces dance based on the body and is one of the support points for his work. His gaze has always been directed towards the limitations of the body and the possibilities it allows for transforming the “other”, be it a spectator or an accomplice of the action to which the body is subjected.

Jorge Lopes Ramos (RJ) – Living in the United Kingdom since 2000, he was the artistic and executive director of the Zecora URA company between 2001 and 2012. Le cabaret discrépant In Le cabaret discrépant, bodies have as much to say as words. Inspired by Lettrism – a movement that valued the sound of words, created by poets Isidore Isou, Gabriel Pommerand, François Dufrêne and Maurice Lemaitre in the 1940’s–, Olivia Grandville decided to make a choreogra-phy after being in contact with a little book about dance called Chiselling Dance, written by Lemaitre with a preface by Isou. She was surprised with descriptions of choreographies “to be completed or invented” that reflect current issues of the choreographic practice, even though they dated from the 1950’s. Le cabaret discrépant is a playful and irreverent tribute to a group of young utopians that dreamt of a “heavenly society” in which the values of art would have replaced those of money.

On November 2 and 3, the artist will also promote two flashmobs within Panorama 2013. Times and places will be announced on the festival’s social networks. And on November 1, Olivia participates in the Docu-ments :: Movements Seminar.

Olivia Grandville participated as a performer in the works of Maguy Marin, Bob Wilson and Dominique Bagouet. Passionate about the correlations between words and gestures, she uses an aesthetics that puts the body at the center of a network of relations with other media. Parallel to her work as a choreographer, she recently worked as a performer with Vincent Dupont and Boris Charmatz. She had classic training and spent the first years of her career in the Paris Opera Ballet.

Roger Bernat | Espanha

Domínio público Domínio público is like a life-size board game, in which the spectator is much more than just a piece. The action takes shape with instruc-tions carefully orchestrated by Bernat, in order to investigate the nar-rative possibilities that emerge in a collective trying to organize itself. Micro-communities are formed and come apart, reflecting some social patterns that are decisive to reach the end of the action.

Roger Bernat creates pieces in which the audience is the protagonist, as he invites spectators to take control of all the actions in his perfor-mances. His work includes Pura coincidência (2009), Please continue: Hamlet (2011), Voto pendente (2012), RE-presentação (2013) and La consagracion de la primavera, also part of Panorama’s 2013 pro-gramming. Bernat worked with a group of kids to conceive a version of Domínio Público aimed at teenagers.

A Mary Wigman dance evening Fascinated by the work of German choreographer Mary Wigman, one of the pioneers of modern dance, dancer and choreographer Fabián Barba reconstructed her expressionist pieces performed in the United Stated, based on videos, dancers’ accounts and photos. In his first work with Wigman’s repertoire, Schwingende Landschaft, Barba created a cycle based on seven solos from 1929. A Mary Wigman dance evening comes from more extensive material of the German artist and further develops the tension between the original pieces and their restagings.

Fabián Barba created the collective Busy Rocks with five other P.A.R.T.S. students. After participating in some collective creations, he created his first solo piece in 2009. Parallel to his own work, he collaborates as a performer with artists such as Thomas Hauert / ZOO, DD Dorvilier and Olga de Soto. He was awarded the Prix Jardin d’Europe for A Mary Wigman dance evening.

Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz | Portugal

Um gesto que não passa de uma ameaça In Um gesto que não passa de uma ameaça, Sofia Dias and Vítor Roriz conceive words as bodies that are subjected to the logic of movement composition. Like when we repeat a word until it loses its meaning, this piece seeks to situate the audience in that moment of losing and assign-ing meaning, of degeneration and transformation, aligning itself with the chaotic way the mind perceives and connects events. To consider a word as a body means dealing with its full potential, it means taking not only its meaning into account but also its musical plasticity and its relation-ship with voice, breathing and music.

Sofia Dias’ dance training was split between New York and C.e.m, in Lisbon. She has worked with choreographers from Portugal and other European countries. Vítor Roriz has a degree in physical education, dance and performing arts. He was a grantee of DanceWeb2011 and participated in the multidisciplinary projects COLINA/06 (Tallinn, Es-tonia) and APAP/07 (Torres Vedras, Portugal). Since 2006, Vítor and Sofia collaborate in the research and creation of dance works, performed in European countries. Lamentos e gozos da Imperatriz de ItapipocaMore than building expressive, linear and expansive body movements, Lamentos e gozos da Imperatriz de Itapipoca challenges the perform-ers to be receptive and to cooperate through direct and indirect contact with a rectangular piece of wood. These interactions create poetic atmo-spheres, meeting and staying points, portals of countless sizes and shapes that are opened upon what is invisible and unspeakable. Choreographers Marcelo Evelin, Andrea Bardawil and Lia Rodrigues contributed to the con-cept of the piece. The title is a tribute to the inhabitants of Itapipoca (CE) and to the city itself, which used to be called Vila da Imperatriz during the colonial period.

For 20 years, Cia. Balé Baião has been developing a pioneer project in contemporary dance research, creation and ongoing training in the city of Itapipoca, in Ceará. The company is composed by dancer-performers-creators and teaching artists that develop collaborative and socio-educa-tional artistic work. It currently functions as a Ponto de Cultura at the old sawmill donated by the father of the company’s director, Gerson Moreno.

Eduardo Fukushima | Brasil, SP

Entre contenções & Como superar o grande cansaço? The Entre contenções and Como superar o grande cansaço? solos represent two stages of the contemporary dance language research Eduardo Fukushima has been carrying out since 2007, based on autobiographical issues and feelings. The dancing is the question itself, as will to power and generator of movement. The first piece uses the least possible amount of scenic elements, creating a dance that takes place in the rawness of space. The second solo is an answer to the question-title. The action emerges from physical weariness, from exhaustion. The choreography is built upon gestures and intentions within a specific movement combined with repetition and breathing. Despite the fatigue, the dance continues to be... fast.

Eduardo Fukushima is a choreographer, performer and teacher. He was granted the Swiss scholarship Rolex Mentor and Protègè Arts Initiative 2012-2013 to study in Taiwan for a year with choreographer Lin Hwain Min, artistic director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. He has worked with choreographers Ângelo Madureira and Ana Catarina Vieira, Célia Gouvêa, Luis Fernando Bongiovanni and Miyako Kato. He received awards for the solos he will perform within Panorama Futuro.

Tritone Meet Miss Domicília, created in 1997 by Sílvia Real and Sérgio Pelágio. She is a technology-dependent urban character, a caricature of domes-tic life nowadays. After experiencing the situations of Casio Tone (1997) and Subtone (2003), it’s now time for the audience of Panoraminha to embark in the dream vacations of Miss Domicília in Tritone. The piece mixes different artistic languages and takes inspiration from very distinct sources such as the work of French filmmaker Jacques Tati and Vasco Granja, the pioneer of animation in Portugal. The Miss Domicília trilogy is a combination of languages that crosses different intertextual levels, activating a series of references and reaching an audience that goes from children to adults.

Silvia Real was a performer for João Fiadeiro, Vera Mantero, Miguel Pereira and Francisco Camacho. In 1998, along with musician and com-poser Sérgio Pelágio, she created the Produções Real Pelágio Cultural Association. Sérgio Pelágio has played with David Liebman, Andy Shep-pard, Graham Haynes, Frank Lacy, Norma Winston, John Abercrombie, Sylvia Cuenca, Mário Franco, Bernardo Sassetti and Mário Laginha, among others. He has worked as a composer with choreographers Paulo Ribeiro, Paula Massano, João Galante, Teresa Prima, Vera Mantero, Francisco Camacho and Sílvia Real.

BURACO BURACO was born out of a desire to share other possible relationship logics with children, opening space for a sensory and sensitive adventure. On stage, three performers take off for an adventure: they pierce large, small, green, dark, noisy and silent landscapes. BURACO is an adventure of matter, everything is pierced and everything pierces. Without transitions. A whole world fits in.

Elisabete Finger is a performer and choreographer. Since 2010, she lives and works between Berlin (Germany) and Curitiba (Brazil), developing projects with other artists. She was an artist-in-residence at Casa Hoffman - International Center for Movement Studies (Curitiba, 2004), was part of the Essais program at CNDC d’Angers (France, 2005/2006) and completed the Master of Arts Solo/ Dance/ Authorship (SODA) at HZT/UdK (Berlin, 2010-2012). Festival Panorama’s Educational Project intends to promote artistic experimentation and reflectionthrough the relationship between its different audiences and contempo-rary art. In the 2013 programming activities that stimulate thinking and criticism, as well as audience devel-opment initiatives, are part of work-shops, seminars, laboratories, meet-ing with educational professionals, film screenings, shows for children and young people.

Educational Program

Cultural Mediation Based on common points of interest in the programming, the Festival’s Educational Project establishes partnerships with the government, educational and cultural institutions, communities, NGO’s, public and private schools, universities, cultural centers, museums and educational, social and cultural programs of the city and the state of Rio de Janeiro, enabling free entrance for shows.

Critique Laboratory In this edition, Festival Panorama organizes the Critique Laboratory for the second time. Produced in partnership with the Dance Theory Course of the Body Art Department of EEFD-UFRJ, the activity is coordinated by professor Sérgio Andrade. The Laboratory will deal with issues like the critic gaze towards a dance piece, criticism as a translation device and criticism in the media.

Internship ProgramIn partnership with the Dance Course of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Panorama develops an internship program for undergraduate students who wish to act as cultural mediators in the Educational Program, facilitating the dialogue between different audiences and the artistic programming.

Volunteer ProgramSince 2009, Festival Panorama has been investing in volunteer training as an opportunity to give young students access to the job market. The Festival represents a learning environment by means of a learning pathway that includes experiencing the daily activities of the event in different areas and being able to participate in the Cultural Management and Production Workshops offered by Panorama’s team.

Culture Point PanoramaPonto de Cultura Espaço Panorama connects and strengthens the ongoing activi-ties of Associação Cultural Panorama that were born within Festival Panorama but took on a life of their own. Production, development and awareness to dance are fos-tered in projects that promote, support and spread contemporary dance on a national and international level. The main activities are awareness through dance workshops and the activities related to Videoteca Panorama. Ponto de Cultura Espaço Pano rama is part of the Ministry of Culture’s Cultura Viva program, associated with the Rio de Janeiro’s State Culture Secretariat.

Panorama Video LibraryVideoteca Panorama has over two thousand dance films, including recordings of shows, performances and videodances. The collection has been open to the public since 2011 and has been constantly receiving new contributions. It is a non-profit initiative aiming to contribute to the development of the artistic field of dance, by increasing access to recordings of dance works.

Since its opening in Ponto de Cultura, Videoteca has served hundreds of people, either in visits to its physical space or in itinerant projects and participations in events produced by the project or by partner institutions. Videoteca also collabo-rates by reproducing its collection for the libraries of dance colleges.

Panorama Video Library on the streets! The Videoteca Panorama on the streets! project screens films each first Wednes-day of each month. On the street at Rua da Lapa, in front of building 213, in the cen-ter of Rio de Janeiro, the screenings publicize the collection and the other projects of Videoteca, showcase dance and media artists and present issues related to the art of dance. After each session, right on the public square, guests discuss the contents that were presented, valuing the occupation of the public space and increasing the population’s access to dance production and its dialogues.

Classes and workshopsThe workshops of Ponto de Cultura da Associação Cultural Panorama aim to create a space for ongoing development, with activities related to the practice and the theory of contemporary dance for a diverse public. The workshops have been held in many neighborhoods – and even some other cities in the state. They took place in places such as the Talavera Bruce Women’s Prison, the Nise da Silveira Psychiatric Hospital, Olympic Villages and theaters in Rio’s North and West Zones, as well as Pontos de Cul-tura in communities all over the state.

Ponto de Cultura Espaço Panorama currently maintains two workshops: dance classes at IPUB / UFRJ Psychiatric Hospital and the Sensibilizando o olhar… Dan-çando workshop, which is being developed in four municipal schools in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

Panorama @ ArenasThis year, the Festival starts an unprecedented partnership with the Arenas Culturais of the Rio de Janeiro City Culture Secretariat. The Arenas of Pavuna and Penha will receive contemporary dance workshops with African choreographer Marcel Gbeffa, from Benin, and screenings of films from Videoteca Panorama’s collection.

Support for the tour: Alliance française Rio de Janeiro

Lab Uni – University LaboratoryContinuing the Panorama at the Universities project that started in 2012, Festival Panorama presents the University Laboratory 2013, at Oi Futuro Flamengo. Lab Uni – a part-nership between Pano rama and the Body Art Department of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) – is a meeting among researchers from Brazilian universities focused on body and performance studies. A space for free experimentation, with presentations of works in different formats selected through a call-for-entries.

OI FUTURO FLAMENGO 11H ÀS 18H The program of the roundtables and selected works is available at www.panoramafestival.com

Roger Bernat | EspanhaRE-presentación: Numax A special session of one of Roger Bernat’s most important pieces opens the university meeting and presents the reconstruction process of the Catalan director. In 1979, after two and a half years of strikes, protests and self-management, the workers of appliance factory Numax, in Barcelona, decided to make a documentary in partnership with film-maker Joaquim Jordá to tell the story of their struggle. Committee meetings and assemblies are depicted in the film. In the REpresentación: Numax performance, Roger Bernat invites the audience to participate in re-creating some of the situations experienced by the factory workers.

Documents :: Movement SeminarA space to reflect about the Panorama 2013 programming, the seminar inaugurates a partnership between FestivalPanorama, Museu de Arte do Rio - MAR and the Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ), through the Art of the BodyDepartment. Based on the issues of the restagings and re-enactments in different formats that are present in the 2013programming, the seminar gathers Brazilian and international artists and researchers to discuss this kind of artistic prac-tice and its historical and political context. Panorama 2013 takes a look at some historical moments of the Avant-garde movements of the 20th century and the possibilities of thinking about the exchange between body-movement and social-movement.

Dancing disidentity: after ButohParallel to the retrospective of artist Yayoi Kusama at CCBB, Panorama 2013 opens space for Japanese performance with the Dancing Disidentity: After Butoh showcase, curated by Japanese critic Daisuke Muto. An Avant-garde performance movement that emerged in Japan in the 1960s, butoh was an experiment of rejecting traditional Japanese and Western dance disciplines to reveal a bare body and its vital force and mobility. Thus, butoh was a resistance to the idea of the body as an agency of “Japaneseness”. Even after butoh declined around the late 1980s, this basic idea of corporeal resistance to identity politics seems to remain in contemporary dance-makers.

The Dancing Disidentity: After Butoh showcase presents to the audi-ence of Panorama three creations by artists who explore influences that range from traditional butoh to pop dance.

In Chinese Flower (90min), Kota Yamazaki combines different dance languages to build a beautiful disorder. An original choreography that mixes Eastern and Western influences, including butoh, Yamazaki’s work has been described as “butoh on speed” for carrying the classic discipline and theatricality of the Japanese dance style.

Shigehiro Ide captures daily movements in his humorously schizophrenic choreography. In 1995, he created the IDEVIAN Crew, which seeks to explore the personality of each dancer. The choreographer participates in the showcase with Kankeisha Deluxe (60min), from 2004.

Private Trace 2009 (25min) is a piece to observe relationships. Nat-suko Tezuka proposes the observation of a very familiar situation - we will probably never know what really happens there. The artist works in disassembling and decomposing the human body. Since 2001, she has been producing solos for the Anatomical experiment, in which she explores concentration and actions in her own body. One of the perfor-mances will be enacted live in the HAPPENINGS program.

The film showcase and Natsuko Tezuka at HAPPENINGS are produced in partnership with Kyoto Experiment.

PROJETO ASSOCIADO | THEATRO MUNICIPAL 31

The Rite of SpringIn another associated project, Panorama 2013 joins forces with Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro for two evenings of celebrating the hundredth anniversary of The Rite of Spring. On the October 29 and 30 sessions, those who present the ticket to any of the Panorama 2013 shows will pay only R$ 20 (R$ 10 half price) for the ticket at the current Municipal season. The initiative is part of a series of tributes to Nijinsky’s piece on this edition of the Festival.

Vaslav Nijinsky’s historic and revolutionary piece, with music by Igor Stravinsky, gets a new rendition for ballet by American choreographer Millicent Hodson, conducted by Argentinean conductor Javier Logioia Orbe. The program with eight sessions between October 19 and 30 is completed by L’après-midi d’un faune, with Nijinsky’s original choreogra-phy and music by Claude Debussy, and Le spectre de la rose, by Michel Fokine, with music by Carl Maria Von Weber, both restaged by Tatiana Leskova. This is a chance for Rio’s public to get to know a classic staging of the masterpiece.

THEATRO MUNICIPAL DO RIO DE JANEIRO 29 E 30 OUT / 20H 70min (with intermission) Tickets at R$ 20 upon presentation of a ticket to any of the shows of Panorama 2013.
