BODY-COVER FLANGEDJ OINTS

Fla nged bod y-co ver joints a re d esigned to meet

the req uirements of AS ME Sec tion VIII, Div. 1

a nd/or AS ME B16.5.

For Series 150Y2 and 300Y2 strainers, the

body-cover joint is designed using the equations

found in Appe ndix II of the AS ME P res sure

Ves se l Cod e. C a lcula tions a re pe rformed using

standard gaskets and with the existence of a

ed ge moment. The g a sket ca vity is fully enc los ed

ensuring proper gasket alignment while preven-

ting unwinding of spiral wound gaskets if used.

Exclusive

Series 600Y2, 900Y2 and 1500Y2 strainersincorporate a body-cover joint that is in dimen-

sional accordance with the flange dimensions

spe cified in AS ME B 16.5. Among the a dva ntag es

of this strong leak-proof design is the conveni-

ence of using gaskets that are in accordance

w ith AS ME B16.20 a nd AS ME B16.21. This

feature eliminates the need for dimensionally

special gaskets when maintenance is performed.

Using the abo ve formula, S pence ca n design a nd manu-facture any strainer screen to suit your specific strength

requirements.

SCREEN SEATING

All Spence Y-Strainers are manufactured with both

upper and low er mac hined s ea ts. This fea ture

eliminates debris by-pass while also acts to se-

curely hold the screen in position when in service.

For assembly and disassembly purposes,

S pence Y-S tra iners a re des igned s o that the

screen is securely slid over or into a machined lip

on the c over bonnet. This a llow s the sc reen to be

easily guided into the upper machined seat

during assembly.

In pa rticula r, fo r Series 600Y2, 900Y2 a nd 1500Y2

strainers, where the cover flange tends to be

heavy and difficult to maneuver, the screen is also

guide d a round its c ircumferenc e b y the s tra iner

bo dy. This fea ture elimina tes the poss ib ility o fmisa lig ning the s tra iner sc reen during a ss emb ly

while providing additional support to the screen

w hen in service. This c ircumferent ia l support

reduces maintenance time and costs since the

strainer ca n be a ss embled q uicker a nd sa fer than

with other designs.

STRAINER SCREENS

All S penc e Y-Strainers a re e q uipped w ith

screens that have an open flow area manytimes greater than the pipe nominal cross-

sec tiona l a rea . This is impo rtant in order to

reduce initial pressure drop and decrease the

rate in which the pressure drop increases as

the strainer sc reen b ec omes clog ge d. As

sho w n in the figure the la rge r the sc reen a rea

the low er the ra te o f increas e in pres sure drop.

A Y-Strainer sc reen m ust b e s trong enoug h to

handle the resulting differential pressure that

occurs when in service. In general all Spence

strainer sc reens a re d esigned to handle aminimum b urst pres sure of 50 psid. S penc e

calculates the burst pressure of screens using

the formula:

SCREEN OPENINGS

FACTORS TO CONSIDER

1 PurposeIf the strainer is being used for protection rather

than direct filtration, standard screens will suffice

in most applications.

2 ServiceWith services that require extremely sturdy

screens, such as high pressure/temperature

applications or services with high viscosities,

perforated screens without mesh liners are

recommended. If a mesh liner is required to

obtain a certain level of filtration, then a trapped

perf/mesh/perf combination is recommended.

3 Filtration LevelWhen choosing a perf. or a mesh/perf.

combination, attention should be given to ensure

overstraining does not occur. As a general rule,the specified level of filtration should be no

smaller than half the size of the particle to be

removed. If too fine a filtration is specified, the

pressure drop through the strainer will increase

very rapidly, possibly causing damage to the

screen.

Screen openings other than those shown above

are readily available. Various mesh sizes as fine as

5 micron and perforated plate as coarse as 1/2

D ia. are in inventory.

Screens are available in a wide range of materials.

Screens of carbon steel, stainless steel (304, 316),

alloy 20, monel 400, hastelloy C and titanium

grade 2 are in inventory.
