2. Resumo dos Trabalhos Desenvolvidos e Desvios à Proposta aprovada

Resumo dos trabalhos

Descreva de forma breve as actividades desenvolvidas no período em apreço e os resultados alcançados. Referia-se em concreto às tarefas que tiveram execução no período a que o relatório respeita.

The project’s team has developed all the six tasks, working towards the achievement of the main goals of the project and the planned outputs. Major efforts were put into the completion of data collection for European and Brazilian Portuguese, and data for varieties of African Portuguese could finally be obtained. The analysis of considerable sections of these data, including prosodic phrasing, rhythm and intonation, and comparative work across varieties of Portuguese and other Romance languages, was presented at several conferences (e.g., 6th International Conference on Tone and Intonation in Europe (TIE), The 22nd Manchester Phonology Meeting, 4th International Symposium on Tonal Aspects of Languages, 1st International Symposium on Variation in Portuguese), published in book chapters (OUP, John Benjamins, Textos Seleccionados da APL), and submitted for major conferences (18th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS 2015), Phonetics and Phonology in Europe 2015), journals (Journal of International Phonetics Association, Laboratory Phonology) and publishers (De Gruyter, John Benjamins). The Interactive Atlas web platform (http://Labfon.letras.ulisboa.pt/InAPoP/), available online since December 2012, has been continuously improved and updated. It now offers an extensive section with resources for research on Portuguese prosody, and the training tools for the transcription of Portuguese prosody are well advanced and will be made available shortly. Two MA thesis (on prosodic phrasing across EP varieties and on the intonation of declaratives in Guinea Bissau Portuguese) were concluded, and two PhD thesis are in progress (both of them with awarded grants from research agencies, namely CAPES, Brazil and FCT, Portugal). A summary of the activities developed by task follows. 1. Data collection, file editing and labeling Data collection for European Portuguese (EP) according to geographical distribution is nearly finished, with 32 datapoints covered (included islands) and 4 in progress (Figs 1-3). For Brazilian Portuguese (BP), data collection is completed for 8 data points, and in progress for other 2 (Fig. 4). After major efforts, data collection was obtained for varieties of African Portuguese (one point in Guinea Bissau covered and 3 other points in progress, respectively in San Tome and Principe, Angola and Mozambique – Fig. 5). This represents a database with speech from 254 speakers (199 for EP, 47 for BP, and 8 for African Portuguese). File editing and labeling of the collected materials is proceeding at good pace. 2. Interactive web platform The web platform was updated (geographical points covered, local supporting institutions, main results obtained, examples, resources, news). The training tools for the transcription of Portuguese prosody, that are another output of the project contained in the web platform, are well advanced and will be made available shortly (http://labfon.letras.ulisboa.pt/InAPoP/P-ToBI/). Effective collaboration with the team member from geography, and advanced courses in GIS taken by a team member from prosody have maximized efficiency and productivity. 3. Variation in prosodic structure The investigation of prosodic structure and phrasing preferences has covered intonational phrasing and prosodically constrained segmental phenomena (vocalic sandhi, glide insertion) across several EP varieties. A MA thesis was concluded, several papers were presented at international and national conferences, and a book chapter was published. Moreover, a comparison between EP and BP was carried out in a Handbook paper (accepted). 4. Variation in rhythm and the realization of stress The analysis of rhythm across EP varieties included central-southern and northern regions besides standard EP. This work lead to a published book chapter, a communication and a submitted paper. Furthermore, a study on emphatic and prosodic word initial stress in BP was carried out, resulting in a communication and a published proceedings paper. 5. Variation in intonation Several studies were conducted focusing on the intonation of sentence types and semantic-pragmatic distinctions and tonal density in varieties of EP and BP, and on declarative intonation in Guinea Bissau Portuguese. A thorough comparison between the intonation of EP (Standard variety) and BP (Rio do Janeiro) was carried out in a Handbook chapter (accepted). Variation in the intonation of yes-no questions was systematically studied both in EP and BP, leading to several communications in international and national conferences, and to a paper submission. The study of Guinea Bissau declarative intonation and its

comparison with BP led to a journal paper (accepted). Variation in visual prosody, together with spoken prosody, was also analyzed. Preliminary results were presented in a poster, and further results led to two submissions for international conferences. 6. Portuguese within Romance The study of prosody in comparable ways across Romance languages was pursued further and accomplished several outputs. A paper on the intonation of Catalan, with a view on other Romance languages, has been accepted for publication. A comparison between Peninsular Spanish and European Portuguese was published as a book chapter. A systematic comparison of the prosodic systems of 9 Romance languages, including Portuguese, is currently in press as the final chapter of the book ‘Intonation in Romance’ (OUP). How segmental phenomena provide evidence for prosodic structure across languages, including Portuguese, is the topic of an accepted book chapter (De Gruyter). Romance languages’ data was the main source for a submitted paper on how to achieve the transcription of intonation within and across languages. The contribution of the Portuguese team to the Interactive Atlas of Romance Intonation was concluded.

Desvios à Proposta Aprovada

Se tiver havido desvios à proposta aprovada, quer do ponto de vista científico como financeiro, aponte os desvios e justifique-os. Se teve dificuldades na execução do plano de trabalhos aprovado, identifique-os e indique de que modo pretende ultrapassá-los. Se no período em apreço tiver informado a FCT sobre alteração orçamental inter-rubricas (necessitem ou não de autorização por parte da FCT), indique aqui o motivo.

Foram solicitadas duas alterações à proposta aprovada: a realização de uma formação em ArcGIS e um pedido de extensão do prazo de execução do projecto em 6 meses. A realização de uma formação em ArcGIS a ser frequentada por um membro da equipa junto da ESRI foi solicitada e autorizada, dada a sua relevância para a implementação e manutenção da plataforma interactiva com a devida disponibilização do mapeamento geográfico da variação prosódica. Esta formação encontra-se, assim, diretamente relacionada com a concretização dos objetivos do projeto (tendo sido a respective verba inscrita na rubrica missões). A extensão do prazo de execução do projecto em 6 meses, devidamente autorizada, é fundamentada pelos pontos descritos abaixo: 1. Conclusão da recolha de dados em diversos pontos de Portugal e do Brasil e tratamento dos dados. A recolha de dados em alguns pontos de Portugal sofreu atrasos devido a restrições da disponibilidade das localidades (Câmaras e juntas de freguesia), que disponibilizam as instalações onde são efectuadas as gravações, e ao agendamento dos informantes, sempre dependente das disponibilidades individuais destes. Por outro lado, dado o aumento de pontos de recolha no Brasil (dos 5 previstos inicialmente para 12), o calendário inicial para recolha e posterior tratamento dos dados teve, naturalmente, de ser estendido. Prevê-se que o tratamento dos dados obtidos seja finalizado dentro da extensão de prazo solicitada. 2. Após múltiplas tentativas de possível colaboração no sentido de obter dados do Português Africano, foi efectivada uma parceria nesse sentido (para obtenção de dados in loco) e foram encontradas formas de recolha de dados junto de sujeitos que acabaram de chegar a Portugal, vindos de África. A extensão de prazo solicitada permitirá a inclusão de dados do Português Africano no Projecto. 3. A Plataforma Web Interactiva, tal como descrito em sede de candidatura, constitui um dos principais outputs do projecto. O carregamento da plataforma com a amplitude de dados do Português Europeu e do Português do Brasil coberta pelo Projecto, e também de dados do Português de África, possibilitando assim a sua disponibilização à comunidade científica, apenas pode ser efectuado após o respectivo tratamento desses dados. Prevê-se que os dados ilustrativos de todas as regiões analisadas estejam disponibilizados na plataforma dentro da extensão de prazo solicitada.
