CAPITAL OF SLOVENIA – LJUBLJANA

It is a relatively large central European city

situated between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea

with approximately 300,000 inhabitants. It is the

political and cultural heart of the Slovenian nation

and most charming in summer. It is a city of

culture and a rich historical legacy which offers

all the friendliness of a small town and at the same

time everything that a capital city should offer.

The visitor’s first impression of Ljubljana is that

it is an exceptionally young city because its over

50,000 students lend it a special youthful

feeling. Many scientists come to Ljubljana

because of its university and institutes with solid

international reputations. It is considered a city

that suits both its residents and many visitors.

Even though it is a middle-sized European city,

it maintains the friendliness of a small town and yet simultaneously possesses all the

characteristics of a metropolis. Here, at the meeting point of the cultures of East and West

the old comes together in harmony with the new.

Ljubljana is a city to which people often travel for

business or return to due to their pleasant

memories of a previous visit. Given its

geographical position, Ljubljana also represents

an ideal starting point to discover the amazingly

diverse features and beauty of Slovenia.

UNIVERSITY OF LJUBLJANA

The University of Ljubljana was founded in 1919 on the basis of centuries of tradition,

remaining the only Slovenian University for half a century. Students account for more

than one-seventh of the population, giving the city of Ljubljana a youthful and lively

character.

It ranks as a very large university, with more than 63,000 graduate and postgraduate

students, approximately 4000 higher education teachers are employed in the 22 faculties,

3 arts academies and one university college.

The University of Ljubljana has a consolidating role in the academic community of

professors, researchers, students and other associates, and strives to establish its fine

reputation both at home and around the world. Over one half of the study programmes in

the 2007/2008 academic year is offered in accordance with the Bologna Declaration.

FACULTIES OF UNIVERISTY OF LJUBLJANA

Faculty of Economics

The FELU has a long tradition in research and education as it was founded in 1946.

Today, it is the largest faculty of the University of Ljubljana with almost 10,000 full-time

and part-time undergraduate and graduate students and occupies part of a spacious

campus close to the city centre.

Development and modernisation of teaching and research work have been priorities at the

FELU from its very beginning. In autumn 2005 the study programme was changed from

4+1 study programmes into 3+2 programmes in line with the Bologna Declaration and

the prevailing pattern of business studies in Europe. As in the past years the FELU has

operated in line with five basic strategic guidelines: Internationalisation, Links with the

corporate world, Assurance of high quality standards, Market Orientation and Excellence

in organisation, the FELU became strongly competitive and among the best schools in

Europe.

In line with school reorganisation and modernisation the FELU was awarded with EQUIS

accreditation in 2006 which is the leading international system of quality assessment,

improvement, and accreditation of higher education institutions in management and

business administration.

The FELU’s graduates can be found in the highest positions in Slovenian companies. The

FELU’s professors have been on supervisory boards of key Slovenian companies, have

served as members of the Board of the Bank of Slovenia, government administration, as

rectors of the University of Ljubljana, as members of the Presidency of the Republic of

Slovenia, and ministers in its governments.

At present and in the future, the Faculty is endeavouring to become even more

internationally known for its quality and achievements in education and research.

several optional courses that should add up in total to at least 240 hours. Examinations

are either written or oral, or both oral and written. A special feature is group

examinations. All of the students take these examinations on the same day and time.

Faculties of Social Sciences

Established in 1961, the Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the largest members of the

University of Ljubljana. It has over 5,100 students in 30 undergraduate and graduate

study programs.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is housed in a modern facility with state-of-the-art lecture

rooms and provides a distinguished and creative academic setting with ample

opportunities for prospective students to choose from a variety of specialized programs

under expert faculty guidance.

Graduate studies may be organized in either of two ways: (1) general terms and

conditions and the specific program of studies are either completely defined in advance,

or, (2) graduate students proceed only on the basis of general terms and conditions,

allowing them to create an individualized course of studies.

There are 17 research centres within the framework of the Institute, which initiate and

conduct basic applied and developmental research projects in the social sciences. These

in 1990. ŠOU is democratically organised community which represents students'

interests, works for their realisation and helps ensure quality study courses and the variety

and quality of student life.

In terms of its organisation, ŠOU Ljubljana is one of the most representative university

The International Relations Office (IRO) is a crucial advisor and promoter of the FELU’s

internationalization. Its main tasks are to organize and support faculty and student

mobility through different schemes (LLL/Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, CEEPUS and

bilateral agreements), organize the internationally well-renowned Ljubljana Summer

School, gather and disseminate useful information for both students and faculty about

study opportunities abroad and, finally, to constantly undertake activities to promote the

FELU’s international recognition.

The LLL/Erasmus programme ensures students’ mobility and is the most popular and

successful programme. The FELU has bilateral agreements with more than 130 partner

universities from more than 35 countries which enable more than 200 students to study

abroad, while around 200 international students also study at the FELU each year.

The FELU offers a tutor to every exchange student. The tutor is a Slovenian student who

helps the exchange student arrange the necessary documents and helps them get

acclimatized to Slovenia in the first few weeks. The tutor contacts the exchange student

approximately two months before the semester starts. They are also responsible for the

social life of exchange students.
