Prayer
for Peace Please join us for a special Holy Hour devoted to praying for world peace within our own country and throughout the
world. This Holy Hour for
Peace, with prayers focusing on
the intention of peace, will be held on the second,
third and fourth Sunday evenings of the month
from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Holy Hour of
Reparation which has been held on the first Sunday of the month will continue every first Sunday evening as usual, with the prayers that are usually said for that first Sunday Holy Hour.
Evening
Prayer All are invited to pray Evening Prayer on Saturdays
and Sundays after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Here we pray the
psalms, listen to the Word of God and give thanks to God
for the blessings of the day. Evening Prayer is usually about ten to fifteen minutes in length. So come and pray…
Saturdays
and Sundays
after the 5:00 p.m. Mass
“The Liturgy of the Hours is intended to become the prayer of the
whole People of God. In it Christ himself ‘continues his priestly
work through his Church….Pastors of souls should see to it that
the principal hours, especially Vespers (Evening Prayer) are
celebrated in common in church on Sundays and on the more
solemn feasts.’”
-Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1175

2020 MASS BOOK
The Way You Are Dressed
DOES Matter!
Please dress appropriately for Mass during
the summer months. Attire that is meant
for the beach, barbecues, boat or athletic
field is inappropriate for Mass and is
disrespectful to the Lord as we offer
ourselves to Him through the sacred
actions in which we are engaged. It is also
disrespectful to one’s brothers and sisters
in the community. Your cooperation in
continuing to dress up and dress
appropriately for Mass during the summer
weather is appreciated.

THE OFFERINGS
OF
BREAD
AND WINE
If the announced intention at Mass is
for your intention, or if you have memorialized the bread and wine, and
you would like to carry those offerings
forward at the Presentation of the Gifts during Mass, please be sure to let the
ushers know this before the Mass
begins. They will be happy to have you
do this. If no one steps forward to specifically request this, then they will
select people from the assembly.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus affirms that to be a disciple we must also sit at his feet and listen to him. St.
Vincent de Paul taught that it is only in prayer that we can give selfless loving service to those who are poor.
This week, please say a special prayer each day for the
poor and forgotten in our parish.

TO OUR ANONYMOUS SUPPORTERS WHO LEAVE FOOD ON THE ALTAR
AND MONEY IN THE POOR BOXES…THANK YOU!
….when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing
(Matthew 6:3). This teaching of Jesus is lived and practiced by so many of our fellow
parishioners at OLPH. We are blessed by secret benefactors who anonymously make regular donations of food and other necessities, leaving them on the steps of the sanctuary, or dropping off
at the Pantry during office hours. Also, take a look in the Sunday Bulletin weekly collection breakdown. The contributions put into the poor boxes as you leave Church add up and are the major source of our funding. You know who you are, but we’re not sure that you realize how
much your quiet acts of charity mean to the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at
OLPH, and to those whom we strive to serve. Thank you and may God bless you!!!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

CATHOLICS FOR THE FREEDOM OF RELIGION
FOCUS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM www.cffor.org
Religious Freedom Victories at Supreme Court
* The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that a 40-foot World War I memorial cross, erected over 90 years ago, can stay on public land in Bladensburg, Maryland. The cross "has become a
prominent community landmark, and its removal or radical alteration at this date would be seen by many not as a neutral act but as the manifestation of a hostility toward religion
that has no place in our Establishment Clause traditions," wrote Justice Samuel Alito in the majority decision. "The Religion Clause of the Constitution aims to foster a society in which people of all beliefs can live together harmoniously, and the presence of the Bladensburg Cross on the land where it has stood for so many years is fully consistent with that aim."
"A government that roams the land, tearing down monuments with religious symbolism and scrubbing
away any reference to the divine, will strike many as aggressively hostile to religion."
* The Supreme Court lifted an order that punished a Christian couple in Oregon ordering them to pay a $135,000 fine for declining to create a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. The high court told a lower court in Oregon to reconsider the dispute in light of the Supreme Court's decision last year involving Christian baker Jack Phillips in Colorado. The justices had found for Phillips because a Colorado state panel had displayed hostility toward his religious beliefs.
A Religious Freedom loss at the Supreme Court in 2018 concerned a similar controversy in Washington state where a florist declined a request for floral arrangements at the wedding of a long-time same-sex patron. The high court returned the matter to a Washington state court with orders to reconsider the case in light of its Colorado decision. The Washington Supreme Court once again ruled against the florist on June 6, 2019. She will now file a second appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

familiar y social.
Tú eres nuestra ESPERANZA, nuestra paz, nuestro mediador, hermano y amigo.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus said, “And I tell you, ask and you will receive;
seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Luke 11:9
Genesis 18:20-32 Last week we heard of Abraham’s meal with three divine visitors who promised him a son within the year. Today, we hear that the purpose of their journey to the nearby towns of Sodom and Gomorrah is to judge whether or not to destroy them because of their wickedness. Why does God tell Abraham this? Since Abraham has been chosen to be the father of nations, he needs to know the consequence of sin in order to teach his children to do what is right and just in God’s eyes. But also notice how God doesn’t need much persuading from Abraham to be merciful to the just people who live in those cities. Perhaps he is also teaching Abraham to be likewise merciful. That’s a good reminder for us!
Colossians 2:12-14 Sin, Paul tells us, puts us under a legal obligation. The weight of that enormous debt incurred by our sins would crush us. We could never repay it. That’s why Jesus took that obligation upon himself and paid for it in full by his suffering and death on the cross. In effect, Jesus took our IOU and, as Paul puts it, nails it to the cross. Now we are free of debt. Even new sins we commit are paid for in full because of Christ’s generous act which has erased all past and future debt. All of this is true for us since we have participated in his death and resurrection through our baptism. God showed us his great love and mercy by doing this for us even while we were dead in sin. Since we could not act on our own behalf, God did it for us. This is the very heart of the Good News and a cause for great rejoicing.
Luke 11:1-13 Jesus teaches us how to pray not only by giving us the words to use but also by telling us the attitude to have: don’t multiply words but be persistent. Jesus encourages the believer to pray and to pray insistently. Jesus tells us that such prayer will be effective. Those who ask will receive and those who seek will find. There is no doubt – Jesus
makes us a promise that it is so. And he says that our Father will give us good things beyond what any earthly father can provide: God will give us his Holy Spirit.

Gospel Reflection Questions…. After reading next Sunday’s readings and
Gospel, take some time to pray on them
before you come to Mass. Use the questions
below to aid your reflection.
1. How are God and the sleepy father in
the parable similar? How are they different? Do you have confidence that God will hear you knock on his door? What do the readings this week do for your confidence? Do you think God already knows all your prayers of petition? Are your prayers of thanksgiving and praise pretty spontaneous?
2. During his daily Mass homily, Pope Francis, reflecting on this Gospel of Luke, tells us that prayer is courageous “knocking at the heart” of God with a strong, unwavering faith that he will respond. What is God’s ultimate gift to us when we do this?
Do we get ourselves involved in prayer? Do we know to knock at the heart of God? …
“The Lord never gives or sends a grace by mail: never! He brings it himself! What we ultimately discover in our asking for various things, [is that] the true grace and answer to our prayers is God's gift of himself to us. When we pray courageously, the Lord gives us the grace, but he also gives us himself in the grace: the Holy Spirit, that is, himself! Who comes to bring it to me. It's him. Our prayer, if it is courageous, receives what it asks for, but also that which is more important: the Lord. … Let us not embarrass ourselves by taking the grace and not recognizing him who brings it to us, him who gives it to us: the Lord.”
