CONGRESO AMERICANOMOVILIDAD Y DEPORTE, PARAGUAY

Starting in the 15th century, Paraguay became the main route to other destinations around the continent. Asunción has been traditionally known as Mother of Cities, serving as a place from where the Spaniards departed to found new Colonies.

The Franciscans arrived in Paraguay in the second half of the 16th Century and founded several communities throughout the country. Their cultural influence was enormous, due to the fact they consolidated the life style of locals and the daily use of both, the Spanish and Guaraní Languages. Some of these works of art can be seen in the churches and museums of the cities of Capiatá, Yaguarón, Itá, Altos, C a a z a p á , A t y r a , Y p a n e , Piribebuy y Tobatí, just a short ride away from Asunción.

The presence of the missionaries of the Company of Jesús (1609 –

1768) was one of the great utopian period experiences in the region that established what was known as the Reductions of Guaran i Tr ibes . Important testimonies in the country left from that time are: the Ruins of Santísima Trinidad del Paraná and Jesus de Tavarangüé (declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO), San Ignacio Guazú, San Cosme y San Damián, Santiago Apóstol, Santa María de Fe y Santa Rosa de Lima. Arts and music flourished during this period and left an artistic legacy of supreme beauty also known as the Guaraní Baroque.

P a r a g u a y d e c l a r e s i t s Independence from Spain in 1811. A Provisional Government is created and ever since, the country has been through different period including two wars, dictatorships, democratic transition and finally constitutio-nal regimes.

Desde el inicio de la conquista, Paraguay fue la ruta para llegar a otros destinos. Asunción ha sido llamada Madre de Ciuda-des, pues fue el punto del cual partieron los españoles para fundar nuevos poblados.

Los franciscanos llegaron a Paraguay en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI y fundaron muchas localidades en el interior del país. Su influencia cultural fue enorme, ya que consolidaron la forma de vida criolla y el uso cor r iente de los id iomas Castel lano y Guaraní . Sus expresiones más acabadas pueden ser visitadas en Capiatá, Yaguarón, Itá, Altos, Caazapá, Atyra, Ypane, Pir ibebuy y Tobatí, a poca distancia de Asunción.

La presencia de misiones de la Compañía de Jesús (1609 – 1768) fue el período de la gran

experiencia utópica en las Reducciones de Indígenas Guaraníes. De esa época quedan importantes testimonios: las Misiones Jesuíticas Guaraní de Santísima Trinidad del Paraná y Jesús de Tavarangüé (declara-das Patrimonio Universal de la Humanidad por la Unesco), San Ignacio Guazú, San Cosme y San Damián, Santiago Apóstol, Santa María de Fe y Santa Rosa de Lima. Las artes alcanzaron gran desarrollo y dejaron un legado artístico de suprema belleza, el Barroco Guaraní. También la música conoció un notable impulso.

En 1811 el Paraguay se indepen-diza y constituye un Gobierno Provisional. A partir de entonces el país pasó por diferentes per iodos inc luyendo dos guerras, dictadura de transición democrát ica y f inalmente regímenes constitucionales.
