If you were to visit Abdul Kareem at his homein southern India, you would see acres of rich

forest with abundant wildlife. But it hasntalways been that way. Twenty-five years ago,the area was a series of dry, rocky, lifeless hills.

Kareem was strangely drawn to the areaduring visits to his wifes family, who livedthere. On an impulse, he bought five acres.In spaces between rocks, he planted saplingsof trees native to the region. The well on theproperty barely yielded a bucketful of waterat a time, so for three summers Kareem useda motorbike to haul water from a source akilometer (about 2/3 mile) away. The fourth year, Kareems efforts began topay off. The new vegetation, sparse as itwas, helped his land retain more

rainwater. The water level in his well rose,and that made it possible for him togradually plant and tend the rest of hisproperty, which had grown to nearly 13hectares (32 acres).

No quarto ano, todo aquele esforocomeou a dar retorno. A novavegetao, mesmo que muito esparsa,

ajudou o terreno a reter a gua dachuva. A produo do poo aumentou elhe permitiu cultivar o resto dapropriedade que crescera para quase 13hectares.

The transformation was slow but steady.As the saplings grew, birds flocked to thearea and sowed the seeds of a variety ofother plants. Year by year, morevegetation grew and more wildlife

arrived. With few resources at hisdisposal, Kareem has changed his part ofthe world, day by day and step bypatient step.A transformao era lenta, mascontnua. A cada ano, a vegetaocontinuava crescendo e a faunaaumentava em populao e diversidade.Com os poucos recursos que tinha, esse
