Estado. Uma das coisas que mais chama

a atenção no seu interior é a pintura do

teto, de autoria do artista Domenico de

Angelis, denominada “A Glorifi cação das

Belas Artes na Amazônia”.

Outro ponto importante é o Centro

Cultural Largo São Sebastião, que foi

revitalizado em 2004 e se tornou um lugar

para o entretenimento e lazer. E, claro, não

se deve deixar de ir ao Museu do Índio.

O local exibe diversas peças produzidas

por tribos da Amazônia, que vão desde

utensílios domésticos a instrumentos

musicais, além de informações sobre

missões religiosas, costumes e cultura

de diversas tribos brasileiras.

Depois da imersão na cultura e histórias

locais, é hora de ver o Encontro das Águas.

De barco, a aproximadamente 40 minutos

do porto, o fenômeno do encontro das

águas barrentas do Rio Solimões com as

águas escuras do Rio Negro é uma das

atrações mais famosas da região. As águas

correm lado a lado, sem se misturar, por

uma extensão de mais de oito quilômetros. A

separação deve-se à diferença de densidade,

temperatura e velocidade das águas dos rios.

No Lago Janauari, após almoçar num res-

taurante fl utuante, com boa comida e uma

feirinha de artesanato, o turista parte para o

passeio de canoa pelos igapós (fl oresta ala-

gada), realizado somente na época de cheia

(de dezembro a junho). No período da seca

(entre julho e novembro), quando descem

as águas, o passeio de canoa é substituído

por caminhadas na selva e as atrações nessa

época são as lindas “prainhas” fl uviais. O

programa termina com um inesquecível

pôr-do-sol sobre as águas do Rio Negro.

e, para isso, passou por grandes transforma-

ções. A Arena da Amazônia, que receberá os

jogos, tem capacidade 44,5 mil torcedores

e sua arquitetura foi inspirada no trançado

das cestarias dos povos indígenas da região.

Construída de acordo com rigorosas premissas

de sustentabilidade, o estádio conta com co-

bertura fi xa para as arquibancadas, restaurante,

estacionamento subterrâneo, acessos para

portadores de necessidades especiais e sistemas

de reaproveitamento de água da chuva, estação

de tratamento de esgoto e ventilação natural

para redução do consumo de energia. Depois

da Copa, o conjunto deverá ser explorado

pela iniciativa privada, como arena multiuso.

r When visiting the capital of Amazonas in Brazil’s northern region, you will get to know the customs of a city nestled in the heart of the rainforest. Manaus, which means “mother of the gods”, is situated at the confl uence of the Negro and Solimões rivers, and is well known for its tourist potential and the rich historical and cultural heritage.

Th e city has rich cultural routes as can be seen in the Amazonas Th eatre. It is one of the main points for national tourism and the cultural and architectural heritage of the state. One of the things that will grab your attention is the ceiling painted by the artist Domenico de Angelis, called “The Glorifi cation of Fine Arts in the Amazon”.

Another important attraction is the Largo São Sebastian Cultural Centre, which was revitalized in 2004 and has since become a place for entertainment and leisure. And, of course, you can´t miss the Indian Museum. On display here are various pieces produced by Amazonian tribes, ranging from household utensils to musical instruments, plus information about religion, customs and diff ering cultures of various Brazilian tribes.

Aft er immersing yourself in the local culture

Manaus is the only city in the Northern Region to host matches of the FIFA World Cup and, therefore, has undergone major transformations. Th e Arena da Amazônia, which will host the games, has capacity for 44,500, with its architecture inspired by the braided baskets made by indigenous people from the region. Built according to strict sustainability rules, the stadium has a fi xed roof for the stands, there are restaurants, underground car parks, access for special needs, systems for reusing rainwater, a sewage treatment station and natural ventilation to reduce energy consumption. After the World Cup, the Arena should become under control of the private sector as a multipurpose complex.

A must-visit destination in the heart of the rainforest

and history, it’s time to see the Meeting of the Waters. By boat, approximately 40 minutes from the port, the phenomenon of meeting the muddy waters of the Solimões River with the dark waters of the Negro River is one of the most famous attractions in the region. Th e waters run side by side without mixing for

a length of over eight km. Th e separation is due to the diff erence in density, temperature and speed at which each river is flowing.

Janauari Lake off ers an excursion, with good food on a fl oating restaurant and a handicraft market; tourists depart on a canoe ride to the igapós (fl ooded forest). It is only possible during the wet season (December to June). During the dry season (between July and November), when the waters retreat, the canoe trip is replaced by jungle walks and the appeal this time is the beautiful river beaches called “prainhas”. Th e excursion ends with an unforgettable sunset over the waters of the Negro River.

Business and Events Tourism Manaus has excellent in-frastructure for Business Tour-ism. The arrival of new hotels in Manaus, has increased over the last three years and has been driven by the economic growth in the Industrial centre of Manaus and by the World Cup, significantly boosting infrastructure for business tourism in the city.

Quem visita o Amazonas tem muito para

ver e aprender. A cultura local é riquíssima e

deixa os turistas impressionados. A principal

manifestação cultural do Estado é o Festival

Folclórico de Parintins, que já conquistou

prestígio internacional e todo ano atrai mi-

lhares de visitantes para Parintins.

A festa gira em torno dos bois Caprichoso

e Garantido, que agora são Patrimônio Cul-

tural do Amazonas. As apresentações de cada

agremiação ocorrem sempre nas três noites do

último fi nal de semana de junho, no Bumbó-

dromo. Nos três dias, tanto Caprichoso quanto

Garantido encenam uma ópera amazônica a

céu aberto onde os bumbás representam len-

das e fi guras mitológicas do folclore regional.

Outro evento que vem ganhando destaque no ce-

nário regional é o Festival de Cirandas de Manacapu-

ru (a 84 quilometros de Manaus), sendo a segunda

maior manifestação folclórica do Amazonas. Atual-

mente, a disputa, realizada em três noites, acontece

no Parque do Ingá, na região central da cidade.

Já na capital, destaque para o famoso Festival de

Ópera no Teatro Amazonas, que ocorre nos meses

de abril e maio. Apesar de clássica, a ópera possuiu

a capacidade de se reinventar, de se recriar e de

impressionar o público. Além do festival, o Teatro

possui programação durante o ano inteiro. Em

julho, acolhe o Festival Amazonas de Jazz, seguido,

em agosto, pelo Festival Amazonas de Dança. Em

setembro é a vez do Festival Amazonas de Música

e, em novembro, o Amazonas Film Festival.

Anyone visiting the Amazon has plenty to see and learn. Th e local culture is rich and continually excites tourists. Th e main cultural event of the State is the Parintins Festival, which has already won international prestige and every year attracts thousands of visitors to Parintins.

Th e festival is a story about the Caprichoso and Garantido oxen, which are now part of the Amazon Cultural Heritage. Th e presentation of each team always occurs over three nights during the last weekend in June at Bumbódromo. During these three days, Caprichoso and Garantido enact an Amazonian opera outdoors where they represent legends and mythological fi gures of regional folklore.

Another event gaining prominence in the region is the Cirandas Manacapuru Festival (84 km from Manaus). It´s the second largest folkloric event in Amazonas, currently the performance happens over three nights at the Ingá Park, in the city centre.

In the capital, the famous Opera Festival at Amazonas Th eatre occurs in April and May. Although classical, the opera has the ability to reinvent itself, to recreate and to impress the audience. Besides the festival, the theatre has a program that runs throughout the year. In July, it hosts the Amazonas Jazz Festival, followed in August by the Amazon Dance Festival. In September it’s is the turn of the Amazonas Music Festival and, in November, the Amazonas Film Festival.

Que tal fazer um cruzeiro pela Amazônia?

Muitas pessoas não sabem, mas existem navios

operando nos Rios Negro e Solimões durante

todo o ano. No cruzeiro fl uvial a aventura pode

ter início na cidade de Manaus, com escalas

em diversos pontos da selva amazônica. No

programa, são feitas atividades como caminha-

das, trilhas e passeios em lanchas na região do

Igarapé Jaraqui e Três Bocas. Durante a noite, o

grande destaque são os passeios noturnos para

focagem de jacarés. Em Novo Airão, a diversão

é o encontro com os botos cor-de-rosa às mar-

gens do Igarapé Trincheiras. Pescar piranha,

ver o despertar da Amazônia e o encontro das

águas dos Rios Negro e Solimões - que não se

misturam, são outros atrativos que podem ser

aproveitados durante um cruzeiro no Estado.

O Amazonas está em alta no segmento, atrain-

do o foco dos principais armadores do mundo,

graças ao clima ameno e a beleza incomparável

de sua riqueza natural. As visitas de cruzeiros à

região ocorrem por temporadas, em geral, entre os

meses de outubro e abril de cada ano. Em média,

Manaus recebe 23 navios por temporada, que

oferecem roteiros para todos os gostos: cruzeiros

gastronômicos, passeios para solteiros, shows com

artistas renomados, festas comandadas por DJs

famosos e roteiros temáticos, como os de fi tness.

deslocamento dos navios, também não pre-

cisa se preocupar. No Amazonas você pode

dormir e acordar “dentro” da Floresta. São

On one of the river cruises there are many adventures to be had and one such adventure begins in the city of Manaus, with stops at various points along the Amazon. There are activities such as walking, hiking and sightseeing by speedboat in the Igarapé Jaraqui and Três Bocas regions. At night, one of the highlights is alligator watching. In Nova Airão, a great experience is to see pink dolphins on the banks of Igarapé Trincheiras. It is also possible to go Piranha fi shing and see the sunrise and the meeting of the waters of the Negro and Solimões rivers, there are many other attractions to choose from during your cruise in the State.

A Floresta Amazônica guarda em

si alguns segredos: concentra 60% de

todas as formas de vida do planeta, mas

calcula-se que apenas 30% de todas elas

são conhecidas pela ciência. Há ainda a

estimativa que exista cerca de um milhão

de espécies animais e vegetais, incluindo

mais de 2.000 tipos de peixes, 2.500 tipos

de pássaros, 3.500 tipos de árvores com

mais de 30 cm de diâmetro e 300 espécies

de répteis, cobras e lagartos. Das 483 es-

pécies de mamíferos existentes no Brasil,

324 vivem na Amazônia (67%).

Desta maneira, algumas atividades pas-

sam a ser “obrigatórias” quando se visita o

Amazonas. Com uma grande biodiversida-

de, o Estado é um dos principais destinos

para os observadores de pássaros. Das 9.700

espécies de aves já catalogadas no mundo,

aproximadamente 3.100 estão na América

do Sul. Destas, mais de 1.600 espécies estão

no Brasil e cerca de 750 na Amazônia.

Outra prática obrigatória na fl oresta é a

pesca esportiva. O Amazonas possui inú-

meros rios que abrigam a maior diversidade

de peixes do planeta, entre eles o tucunaré

(peacokbass), símbolo da pesca esportiva

no Brasil. Predador por excelência, sua

voracidade é tamanha que ele é capaz de

atacar anzóis mesmo sem isca. Os índios

já o pescavam com iscas artificiais antes

mesmo de a modalidade ser praticada pe-

los pescadores esportivos. Por se tratar de

peixes migratórios, em sua maioria, a pesca

esportiva pode ser praticada quase durante

o ano todo. Mas é importante lembrar que

a pesca predatória é proibida (utilização de

instrumentos explosivos, ervas venenosas ou

substâncias químicas tóxicas de qualquer

natureza), como também é restrita a pescaria

no período da piracema “ época da desova

“ entre os meses de dezembro e fevereiro.

when visiting Amazonas. With great biodiversity,

the state is a major destination for bird watchers.

Another mandatory activity in the forest is

sport fi shing. Amazonas has numerous rivers

that harbour the highest diversity of fish on

the planet, including the peacock bass, the

symbol of sport fi shing in Brazil. A predator

par excellence, its greed is such that it even

attacks the hooks without any bait on them.

Th e Indians used to fi sh them with artifi cial bait

even before fi shing became a sport. Because they

are migratory fi sh, sport fi shing can be practiced

almost throughout the year but it is important

to remember that over-fishing is prohibited

as is the use of explosive devices, poisonous

weeds or toxic chemicals of any kind. It is also

restricted to fi sh during the spawning season -

between the months of December and February.
