do Cinema Português”.
It is the enthousiasm and persistence of a group of young people who organize a
festival of Portuguese cinema every year that has taken us to this point, the “Caminhos do
Cinema Português IX".
The "caminho" (road) we had to walk has been marked by diverse vicissitudes and various
obstacles, the road to "Caminhos do Cinema Português" has been hard.
The lack of trust by those related to this field, and the systematic lack of support has turned,
ironically, this involvement into a passion.
Fortunately, these problems are just mentioned here in these lines, once our loyal audience
has been along with us, like through all these festivals, they will always experience a different
picture: the image of the determination and the persistence which has always been with us
and will always be.
Here, in front of you is the account of our "peripécias" (adventure) to get to this point. For now
I wish you a pleasant stay at the capital of the Portuguese cinema.

The City Hall is proud to sponsor the IX edition of the annual film festival, which, with the
addition of other cultural activities, has become a more dynamic cultural event. This event
is organized by Centro de Estudos Cinematográficos and is a collaboration of artists, the
City Hall and a number of other generous sponsors. This union is intended to promote the
Portuguese Cinema for its quality, diversity and preservation.
Caminhos is the result of wise endeavour and is becoming an important part of the cultural
activities in the City. The festival has already helped to increase the demand for Portuguese
films benefiting both the citizens and theatres of the City, and we believe this is only the
beginning.

For those who have among their main goals to promote the Portuguese cinema in
Portugal and abroad as has it been being practised by the “Instituto do Cinema,
Audiovisual e Multimédia”, we gaze upon the enthusiasm with which, in several
regional poles, festivals are being celebrated, with or without a competitive character.
Many of these festivals also include several other activities and are aimed to different
kind of audiences.
This is the case of “Caminhos do Cinema Português”, organized every year by the
“Centro de Estudos Cinematográficos” of the “Associação Académica Coimbra”, which
are on their IX Edition this year.
The coordinators of this annual event expect a strong component dedicated to the
latest Portuguese Cinema, in its several shapes, and also thematic retrospectives
and workshops among other events. Its audience isn’t only from the city in outspoken
cultural rise, but peculiarly from the student sphere that, in Coimbra, has a relevancy
which isnt need to be highlighted.

destacam a música tradicional portuguesa e europeia. Sete elementos conduzem a
o bandolim, a viola braguesa, a guitarra clássica, a guitarra folk e o baixo acústico.

instruments: “cavaquinho”, mandolin, “viola braguesa”, classical guitar, and double bass.
The Grupo de Cordas as musical movement, they are trying to show a different and

Arts and Physical Theatre onde estudou teatro físico. No fim do curso foi convidado

and signed a contract for his two first productions.
He never stopped working in the streets, but he felt he would need other kind of prepara-
tion. He travelled to the USA and studied juggling and physical comedy in the Celebration

very successful and he was offered to stay one more year for specialization. After securing

studies.
He returned to Portugal with a much greater background preparation, ready and set to show
us what he had been learning. He toured north to south and take some performances outwards.
He performed several shows all by himself in the area of physical theatre, until he decided to
take a chance with the Stand-Up Comedy, an old passion from his old times in England. He
did well with this last performance and joined the cast of “O Programa da Maria”.
The street was definitely his first lover, but the passion for performance leads an
actor to find other stages so he can improve and grow up.

0 tempo passa, a vida volta à normalidade.
Gilbert Valence is an actor, and his talented career made him play many relevant roles an
actor may wish to perform. One night, when the play ends, tragedy rushes into his life. His
old friend and agent Georges tells him his wife, daughter and son-in-law have just been
killed in an accident. As time goes by, things return to normal. Gilbert Valence now shares
his time with his grandson, whom he adores, and stage. Sometime later, his agent offers
him a protagonist role in a TV movie with all the elements of a commercial success. Gilbert
Valence gets angry. He doesn't want to accept this rolejust for the money, after a brilliant
and faultless career. When an American film director offers him the role of Ulisses, in a
Joyce adaptation, he gladly accepts. On the set, the film director suggests a rehearsal.
Gilbert Valence shows, some hesitations, some memory blanks, but nothing serious. They
will rehearse next day. But next day, during the shooting, the old actor feels like the world
was wriggling off, and he can't face reality. He can't "seize" the text. He stops. And he
quietly declares: I'm going home...

“Oporto of my Childhood” is a documentary that producer Paulo Branco invited me to make about
the city of Oporto for Oporto 2001 - European Capital of Culture. A documentary about Oporto in 2001
would be impossible now, with the city undergoing major construction, and it is something I may do
later on. Which on the other hand was a good thing, as it provided me with the opportunity to evoke
the Oporto of my childhood, thanks to some of my memories, those that are most simple and most
connected to the city. I consider the film to be a documentary, although I had to carry out some
reconstructions so that it was not reduced to being an album of photographs. Finally it deals with
certain recollections of a type of life and of images from a past time that, although they are connected
to me, do not make up an autobiography.

More than a "story", "António, um Rapaz de Lisboa" aims to be a portrait: it's the portrait of António,
born and bred in Lisbon, a young man who is neither rich nor poor, neither working nor unemployed,
neither part of the social fabric nor a petty delinquent. A youth who tries to survive - and does- in the
present day, in Lisbon. In the Lisbon where we live.

Sinopse_Synopsis
Filmografia_Filmography
In 1996 the United States Congress passed a law that subjects all non-citizens who commit
aggravated felony crimes to deportation, including permanent residents. This controversial
law affects both the immigrant communities in the US and the populations in their home
countries, especially in cases where the repatriate has lost all cultural ties, including the
language, to their native land. This is the story of David Santo, born in Portugal, on one of the
islands of the Azores, who was five months old at the time his parents emigrated to the US.
Now, in his early twenties, and a struggling actor in New York City, David is framed by a
high-school acquaintance from his former Portuguese neighborhood in Massachusetts, who
robs a convenience store while on a visit to New York City. Once in prison, wrongfully con-
victed, David finds out what awaits him after his sentence: repatriation to the Azores, a place
he can't even spot on the map. An unwanted foreigner in his homeland, David must wrestle
with "exile", and with the harsh truths that he uncovers in the process. David refuses to
accept what has happened to him, and dreams of finding a way to return to the United States,
plotting a daring return.

On the outskirts of Paris, a housing project. A youth gang. A fight with the cops. A teenager is
killed. From then on, everything happens fast. The boy was Portuguese. The Portuguese commu-
nity in France never talks. Silence is its rule. But Cidália wants to know: she wants the truth. She
is thirty-six years of age. A cleaning woman. As she pursues her crusade, her battle for change,
the community turns against her. “This is France”, they say, “We are not at home here. We want
no trouble.” Faced with the blank wall of collective embarrassment, Cidalia won’t keep quiet. She
is ostracized. She loses friends, job, family. But one thing she gains: a life of her own.

Everything is common. Everything is common. Everything is common. One can repeat this phrase
three times consecutively and we will still don’t catch it’s meaning. This is a common story, of a
common woman to whom common things happen. However, sometimes, clouds pass by. After-
wards, when everything ends, eyes are shut and there’s nothing left, but in this story no-one ever
dies, (or almost no-one), (but no-one is almost no-one).
Tudo normal. Tudo normal. Tudo normal.

Rui lived his childhood in Mozambique in a territory lost in the deepness of the woods, near the
wild nature, in the frontier of a mysterious river. Son of portuguese colonists, he soon learned to
recognize two distinct realities and emotions - the European and the African. His life was marked
by a permanent option between the two margins: two cultures, the black and the white; the lord and
the slave, the violence and the peace; the love and the passion. At fourteen, and confronted with the
tragic and inevitable destruction of his childhood, Rui Pedro will chose his margin between the
many margins of the river.
negro; o “patrão” e o “escravo”; a violência e a paz; o amor e a paixão...
as muitas margens do rio.

This is the story of an impossible love; of two young people in love. Vera and João can’t
find the space, the time or the identity that might fix this feeling. Apparently, everything
fits them: both families, their friends, the town where they live. Time is the problem. A
time that seems too short for this love (study, family, distant homes) and the time of
their lives-they are young; till the moment this “story” begins they have lived a life that
hasn’t been chosen by them. This is why they are on the run. An escape of no return.
Their wish to be together makes them run away from home, from their friends, from
people, from the world. Isolated in a forest, they part from everything. They take a vow
never to be apart. Together, they feel they can face anything.
A questão é o tempo. 0 tempo

fantasmas e alucinações: o luxo e a decadência do século XVI português, o contra-ataque
estranhos. Só nos restam os fantasmas.
Maria de Noronha, 13 years old, doughter of Madalena de Vilhena and Manuel de Sousa Coutinho,
is a pale and fragile girl, with high fever sickness and violent haemophysis caused by a ruthless
tuberculosis.
To relief the pain, she picks poppies in her garden, she bears them in her arms and, at night, she
places them in the pillows of her bed. However, the poppies have a devastating effect on her. Her deep
sleep is suddenly interrupted by terrible ghosts and allucinations: the portuguese XVI century luxury
and decadence, the Jesuits counter-attack and the terrible Inquisition, the last hope on the extraordinary
birth of a beloved king, the madness and chastity, the plague, the blood and the sperm, a disastrous
and fatal battle, a missing naked king, a wracked nation taken by strangers. Ghosts is all we have
left.

Victor, a 40 years old photograph, lives with his father, who has the phobia of open
space. Tyrannical, he has kept his son away from happiness. The only links Victor
maintains with real life is the joy he photographs upon other people’s faces, and
Julia, with whom he has been corresponding for a while. On the first meeting, Victor
gets to know Julia in person, on the second he finds out her secret: her husband
Fernando, a paralytic man who confronts Victor with his lack of liberty and with his
barren life deprived of experience. Victor understands the right way he must take,
and he takes it, till he finds himself again in the same coffee-house, deeply in love,
waiting for Julia.

face to the inexplicable abandon and the perspective of an eventual closing. A public
service that doesn't seems to be.

belief in the region. The fact that she did not personally prepare her husband's bath,
because she was seven months pregnant, was regarded as the greatest offence she
could have shown to him. She was harassed, and threatened with death. But she
took refuge in her mother's house and fought back.

Lost. Above all lost. In a land that is no longer theirs, longing for others that were
theirs,or at least so they thought. Above all lost, you will see those who returned
twenty years after the break up of the colonies, when they’ve re-built their lives
hicling the ghost of an impossible longing that always appear just they think they’ve
gone; or when they are overcome with a rage and desperation that only they know; or
when they ashamedly weep for an impossible longing. Lost forever as their story
