COMMERCIALS FOODS QUALITY AND GENOTYPES OF RABBITS FOR MEAT PRODUCTION IN MEXICO
Jesús Ruvisel Suárez López, M.C.
Colegio de Postgraduados, 2009.
Due to the growing interest for the commercial production of rabbit’s meat and the
insufficient cost and quality information of balanced feeds. We conducted a research to
know the physical and nutritional characteristics of seven commercial foods for rabbit’s
fattening and evaluated the productive performance from 35 to 70 days of age, the
carcass characteristics and profitability of five genotypes of rabbits for meat production
in winter and summer. Three forty kilogram sacks of food from different brands, were
randomly chosen for every season and 732 two rabbits of 28 days of age from the New
Zealand White (NZ), Californian (CL), Chinchilla (CH) breeds, and their F1 crosses
NZ*CL and NZ*CH were used in a 6*7 factorial (genotypes*brands) repeated
measurement (week) experiment. The lowest effective weight 36.49 ± 0.14 and 37.5 ±
0.14 kg were observed in winter in two brands, which showed the highest content of
fines of 8.2 ± 0.2% and 5.3 ± 0.2%. Only in two brands durability near 98% was
observed. The crude protein in all brands was more than 17% and in six brands the
content of crude fiber and acid detergent fiber was lower than recommended; the
estimated digestible energy (ED) in a brand was 2131 ± 26, in the others was greater
than 2400 kcal DE kg-1. Genotypes NZ, NZ*CL and NZ*CH were higher than CL and CH
with a live weight (LW) of 2000gr at 70 days of age and a average daily weight gain of
34 ± 0.6 g d-1. Feed intake averaged 107 g d-1
and the best conversions of 3.1±0.3 and
3.6±0.3. The survival of NZ, NZ*CL and NZ*CH in summer was higher than 90%. The
best hot carcass weights were of NZ (1239±23 g), NZ*CL (1223±23 g) and NZ*CH
(1221±23 g). The carcass yield of NZ*CH of 60±0.4 % was higher than CL of 58.1±.4 %.
The detriment from cooling was 6.3%. With the prices prevailing during the investigation
the feeding phase was not profitable when the rabbits were purchased outside the farm.
Keywords: Rabbit, balanced feeds, productive performance, profitability.
