Resumes in
the digital era
What is a
great modern
resume?
Creating an
executive
summary
What is a great modern resume?
A great resume has 5 critical features that set it a part from others.
A clean format:
• No lines across
the page
• Easy-to-read
font
A useful header:
• A phone and e-
mail to contact
you
• Links to
professional
social media
profiles
Great start:
• People only spend
6 seconds
scanning your
resume
• Start strong with a
great executive
summary and core
competencies
Focused content:
• Quantifiable
• Outcome focused
• Builds a narrative
• Connects your
education and
experiences
• As an intern with
less experience,
focuses on
education first
Outside the office:
• Highlight
community or
professional
activities
Creating an executive summary
A strong executive summary is the most important part of the modern
resume – it explains who you are and where you’re going in a few
sentences.
1. Calls Attention: the first couple of sentences focus on key adjectives like
creative and focused; references a passion for the activity of the job
2. Highlights the area of interest/challenges: talks about improving the
way the word works through improving cities
3. Aligns you to the role: don’t copy and paste! It should be updated for
every role that you apply for.
4. Differentiation: remember to include factors that separate you from the
crowd and make you special
5. Core competencies: Use words and phrases to highlight the capabilities
that define you as a professional
Getting the right format and content
Great resumes need to have a clean and consistent format with well-
written content...and they are updated for the specifics of each role
you apply for.

Executive Summary
Education & Experience
Extracurricular & Community
Awards and Recognitions
Education and experience:
1. Use this section to highlight
both what you have done and
your potential
2. You can list specific academic
courses that help support why
you would be a fit for the
position
3. If you don’t have that much
experience, use the education
section to talk about projects
and academic
accomplishments
Remember that across all platforms – visitors should meet the same person. Consistency in the information you present about yourself and
content you share is critical to digital resume success!
The extra mile – your resume in the digital era
The way the world interacts and builds relationships has
fundamentally changed with social media – and so has job-seeking.
Building your brand involves a great digital presence.
Social Media Online Resumes Video Resumes
Leverage social media not only for networking
purposes but as a means to build your brand.
Twitter and LinkedIn now offer powerful platforms
for blogging and sharing thought-leadership. By
routinely posting insightful content in your area,
you will be considered a more engaged and
educated professional.
Of course, this is also a place to put your
experiences, education, etc. However, keep
personal and professional profiles separate!
The idea of an online/digital resume is not
necessarily new but the tools now available are
incredible! You can easily and simply create sharp,
professional resumes that are compatible with
mobile devices and traditional desktop browsers.
This is a great way to highlight your digital and
forward-looking capabilities.
Video resumes are not as common in the digital
resume era as online resumes and social media
platforms – but they are a powerful way to set
yourself apart from others.
The key with video resumes is that they have to be
professional and strike a balance between
creativity and focus on the possible role.
Using LinkedIn and Twitter to build your brand
Twitter and LinkedIn are a core piece of any modern professional’s
brand platform.
