Text 1 Text 2Why do I love the silence of the moon,
The paradisal distance of the dawn,The depth of eve mysteriously withdrawn,
Better than all the roses of late June,
The garden's breath, the orchard's golden boon,The burning brightness of the new-mown lawn,The mossy forest-floor with beech-mast strawn,
And green trees waving in the depth of noon.
Night hath her dreams and the lone heart its tears;Silence and longing weep themselves to rest
Each on the other's mild and maiden breast;
The seeking spirit sighs, the dim star hears;Distance and high devotion suit the best,
And deep as thy deep eyes the dawn appears.
The Sleeping Beauty
Once upon a time, there lived a king and a queen, who had no children. They were so sorry about
having no children, that I cannot tell you howsorry they were. At last, however, after many
years, the Queen had a daughter.

The sea of the death (Mar Morto), by Jorge
Amado
Now I should like to tell the dockside tales ofBahia. Old sailors who mend sails, pilots ofsloops, tattooed blacks, rogues, all know thesestories and these songs. I would hear them on
moonlight nights on the Market wharf, in fairs, insmall ports around the bay, next to huge Swedish
ships at the piers in Ilhus. Iemanjs people havemuch to tell.
Come listen to these stories and these songs.Come hear the story of Guma and Lvia, which isthe story of life and love on the sea. And if you
dont find it beautiful, the fault wont lie with therough men who tell it, but because youre hearing
it from the mouth of a man of the land, and onlywith great difficulty can a man of the land
understand the heart of sailors. Even when thatman loves these stories and these songs andattends the rites of Dona Janana, even then he
doesnt know all the secrets of the sea. For the seais a mystery that even old sailors dontunderstand.

THE HARE AND THE TORTOISEOne day the Hare laughed at the short feet and slow speed of the Tortoise. The Tortoise replied:"You may be as fast as the wind, but I will beat you in a race!"The Hare thought this idea was impossible and he agreed to the proposal. It was agreed that the
Fox should choose the course and decide the end.The day for the race came, and the Tortoise and Hare started together. The Tortoise never stopped for a moment, walking slowly but steadily, right to the end of the
course. The Hare ran fast and stopped to lie down for a rest. But he fell fast asleep. Eventually, he wokeup and ran as fast as he could. But when he reached the end, he saw the Tortoise there already, sleepingcomfortably after her effort.
Moral: Slow and steady wins the race.

One very hot day, a thirsty fox saw some ripe grapes in a garden. He said to himself: I am lucky! On a hot day like this, ripe grapes
will be much nicer than cool water.
Then he walked quietly into the garden, and jumped up at the grapes.
But the fox didnt reach them. He tried again and again, but he never
obtained the grapes.
Finally, the fox stopped trying. He said: I will not try anymore; the
grapes are probably sour!
Moral: It is easy to hate what you cannot have.
