Levi Strauss was born inGermany in the mid 1800's andimmigrated to the United States as ayoung man. He lived in New York

City and learned the dry-goodsbusiness for several years. In 1853he took his knowledge and hisdreams to San Francisco(California., USA.) His dream tosucceed came true over the next 20years as he became a verysuccessful businessman.

Many of Levi Strauss'customers were cowboys and

miners. They needed clothing thatwas strong and durable. Straussfound a special fabric from Francethat was comfortable and lasted along time. It was called "serge deNimes," which was later shortenedto the word denim.

Another man named JacobDavis bought large amounts of thedenim fabric from Levi Strauss. Hewas a tailor who made pants forhard-working men. One of hiscustomers was continually tearingthe pockets off his pants. So JacobDavis decided to put rivets oncertain parts of the pants to makethem stronger. The customer lovedthe new pants so much that he toldall his friends, and soon Jacob Daviswas busy making lots of pants with

    rivets.

Jacob Davis soon realized thatusing rivets was a great business

idea, and he didn't want anybody tosteal that idea. He decided that hewould need to get a patent. Butbeing a poor tailor, he didn't haveenough money to pay for thepatent. After thinking it over, hewent to the businessman Levi

Strauss and told him his idea. Hesaid, "If you agree to pay for thepatent, we will share the profits fromthe riveted pants." Levi Strauss didagree, and the new riveted pantbusiness was called Levi Straussand Company. Today Levi's jeansare more popular than ever, andLevi's name continues to live on.
