NowJobs, 56, retires, having closely rivaled (or some might sayeclipsed) Bill Gates as the most highly regarded businessfigure of our times. He proved himself the ultimate willfulleader, forging his singular vision through a combination ofinspiration, unilateralism, and gut instinct. Jobs didnt justcreate products that instilled lust in consumers and enrichedhis company. He upended entire industries. Personalcomputing. The music business. Publishing. Hollywood. All have been radically transformed because of Steve Jobs.

Nine-to-17-year-olds now spend almost as much timeusing social networking services and web sites as theyspend watching television, the study revealed. Amongteens, that amounts to about nine hours a week on socialnetworking activities, compared to about 10 hours a weekwatching TV.

Students are hardly passive couch potatoes online.Beyond basic communications, many students engage inhighly creative activities on social networking sites - and asizeable proportion of them are adventurous nonconformistswho set the pace for their peers []

Furthermore, students reported that one of the mostcommon topics of conversation on the social networkingscene is education. Almost 60 per cent of students whouse social networking talk about education topics onlineand, surprisingly, more than 50 per cent talk specificallyabout schoolwork.

Yet the vast majority of school districts have stringentrules against nearly all forms of social networking duringthe school day - even though students and parents reportfew behavior problems online. Indeed, both district leadersand parents believe that social networking could play apositive role in students lives and they recogniseopportunities for using it in education - at a time whenteachers now routinely assign homework that requiresInternet use to complete. In light of the study findings, school districts may want to consider re-examining theirpolicies and practices and explore ways in which they coulduse social networking for educational purposes.

The study was comprised of three surveys: an onlinesurvey of 1,277 nine-to-17-year-old students, an onlinesurvey of 1,039 parents and telephone interviews with 250school district leaders who make decisions on Internetpolicy. Grunwald Associates LLC, an independentresearch and consulting firm formulated and directed thestudy.
