Perfection. Outside, tones of saffron, avocado and passion fruit in the form of flowers beckon. Go for a wander.

The air suggests turning back. Possibly for a cup of tea accompanied by a slice of homemade cake, a pastry that

melts in the mouth or a hot scone oozing with butter. Tea is not just served at 5, but at any hour where there is a

demand for a moment to be savoured.

is the natural result of so little being written about the history of the Quintas da Madeira. The profusion of scents

that fill the air around them inspires a different type of registration, more poetic.

Amongst the greenery, fragments of sea show us from whence the plants and flowers came, thus making Madeirawhat it is today. In some of the Quintas, collections of plants from all over the world may be found.

A traditional Madeira Quinta in a unique location with a sea front

stretching 400 meters, which was converted into an Estalagem, a small

hotel. It is located on the eastern point of the Santa Cruz bay and itswaters and sea-bed are amongst the most beautiful to be found in the

Casa Velha do PalheiroCasa Velha do Palheiro started off both as a hunting lodge and summer

residence in 1804, its first owner being João Esmeraldo, the first Count of

Carvalhal. Originally, the Count imported a wide variety of trees from allover the world and it's taken for true that many species of rare trees were

given to him as gifts from ships' captains and from King D. João the 6th

himself. At a later period, in 1885, the estate was bought by John Burden

Blandy and it has since remained in the family. Restoration works in Casa

Velha began in 1995 and it was established as a country house hotel in

1997. Hospitality and personalized service to the need of each guest define

the heart of Casa Velha do Palheiro. Part of Tea House, beautifully located

between the famous Palheiro Gardens and the renowned Madeira's greens

of Palheiro Golf, arrangements can be made for coastal cruises or big game

Upon arrival the view couldn't be more inspiring. Vineyards orderly take

over the grounds and make known the typical different stocks producers

of Madeira wine. At Quinta do Furão grape-gathering is still done as inthe old days, and September guests are welcome to participate in the

traditional gathering and pressing of grapes. Paths outlined in the

gardens lead us to the main house, a magnificent building lodging a

restaurant, a pub, a wine-cellar and an handicrafts shop where

embroidery made in Madeira can be bought. There is enough

amusement available at Quinta do Furão but it's within the silence of
