Tete is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River and is noted for its contrasts, on the one hand the natural beauty of the landscapes, the “embon-deiro” tree (baobab), associated with ancient legends, vast green valleys and on the other hand, the gigantic man-made Cahora Bassa Dam, an amazin feat of engi-neering and technology.
It is the second largest dam in Africa and the fifth largest in the world. The reservoir has a surface area of 2000 Km2, is 270 Km Long and at its widest point reaches over 30 Km.
The main ethnic groups here are the Nyanja and the Nyungue and the Sena. The wealth of the region lies in its minerals and agriculture and cattle farming.
Ecotourism is also a potentially strong area still to be developed.In the less known more remote areas, there are wide varieties of wild animals.
Althoug situated inland it has a priviledged position in relation to the frontiers to the North with Zambia, to the East with Malawi, to the West with Zimbabwe and bordering in South, with the Provinces of Manica and Sofala.
Tete é uma Província privilegiada onde a natureza e o engenho humano competem para constituir o ex-libris da região.
De um lado, a beleza natural, onde, ao plano da estepe com os seus embondeiros, árvores a que estão sempre associadas histórias transmitidas de geração em ge-ração, se sucedem os vales profundos e verdejantes do Zambeze e seus afluentes.
Do outro, essa obra gigantesca, a barragem de Cahora Bassa, a 2ª maior de África e a 5ª no Mundo, com uma albufeira que ocupa uma área de 2000 Km2, com 270 Km de comprimento e que na sua maior largura atinge 30 Km.
Habitada predominantemente pelas etnias Nyanja, Nyungue e Sena, é uma região rica em recursos minerais e com aptidão para a agricultura e a pecuária, tendo também no ecoturismo forte potencial para desen-volver.
Nas zonas mais recônditas abunda ainda uma grande variedade de fauna selvagem.
Embora situada numa zona interior, tem uma posição privilegiada com fronteiras a Norte com a Zâmbia, a Leste com o Malawi, a Oeste com o Zimbabwé, e ligando-se a Sul às Províncias de Manica e Sofala.

There are regular flights from Maputo or Beira, or alternatively car travel along the EN6 that links Beira to Machipanda.
From Zimbabwe via Cuchamano, from Malawi via Zobwe and from Zambia via Cassacatiza.
De avião a partir de Maputo ou Beira, em voos regulares ou de carro pela EN 6 que liga Beira a Machipanda.
Pelas fronteiras, por Cuchamano a partir do Zimbabwé, por Zóbwè a partir do Ma-lawi e por Cassacatiza a partir da Zâmbia.

HOW TO GET THERE
A number of hotels, guest houses, motels and boarding houses offer reasona-ble lodging.The Cabora Bassa Dam, in Songo is well worth a visit.The suspension bridge over the river Zambezi, built during the 1960`s, links the city of Tete to the carboniferous centre at Moatize.
The Boroma Church, partially in ruins but which still testifies to the grandeur of this Jesuit Church built at the end of the XIX century. The Fort of S. Tiago Maior de Tete, a Portuguese military construction dating back to the XVI century.
The “fonte nicho” (a natural spring used for water supply, the architecture of which has a strong Portuguese influence) at Village de Angónia.
The rapids and waterfalls on the Zambezi river.
The traditional huts built in the traditional way, with wooden stakes and stones, reeds and clay and covered with a thatched roof are still fairly common in some districts of the Province.

Os rápidos e quedas de água do rio Zam-beze.
As casas tradicionais, ainda comuns nalguns distritos da Província, construídas com estacas e pedras nelas encaixadas e cobertas de colmo.

A dança tem características muito próprias nos diversos distritos desta Província.Destaca-se a dança “nhau” que é também uma iniciação e, como tal, exige demons-tração de virilidade, sacrifício e heroísmo. Nesta dança utilizam-se máscaras de as-pecto medonho.
The traditional dances are characteristic of this particular Province. In particular the “Nhau”, a dance of initiation, represents virility, sacrifice and heroics. The wooden masks used in this dance are particularly impressive and fearsome.

Art and craft, including masks and basketry can be purchased in various establishments and local informal street market stalls.
Visit to Monte Zumbo famous for its clear water springs.There are safaris in the river Mussenguezi region, where wild animals and exotic ve-getation abound. It is recommended that all trips and visits be organized by travel agencies.
