Esta é a história do Ngede, o pássaro-de-mel, e um jovemganancioso chamado Gingile. Um dia enquanto Gingileestava caçando, ouviu o chamado de Ngede. A boca doGingile começou a salivar só de pensar no mel. Ele parou eescutou atentamente, observando até que ele viu o pássaronos galhos acima de sua cabeça. “Chitik-chitik-chitik,” opassarinho sacudiu-se, voando para próxima árvore e,depois, para outra. “Chitik-chitik-chitik,” ele chamou,parando de vez em quando para ver se Gingile o seguia.

This is the story of Ngede, the Honeyguide, and a greedyyoung man named Gingile. One day while Gingile was outhunting he heard the call of Ngede. Gingile’s mouth beganto water at the thought of honey. He stopped and listenedcarefully, searching until he saw the bird in the branchesabove his head. “Chitik-chitik-chitik,” the little bird rattled,as he flew to the next tree, and the next. “Chitik, chitik,chitik,” he called, stopping from time to time to be sure thatGingile followed.

Meia hora depois, chegaram até uma enorme figueiraselvagem. Ngede saltou enlouquecido entre os galhos. Elesentou num galho e inclinou sua cabeça na direção deGingile como se estivesse dizendo, “Aqui está! Venhaagora! Por que está demorando tanto?” Gingile nãoconseguia ver nenhuma abelha olhando debaixo da árvore,mas confiava em Ngede.

After half an hour, they reached a huge wild fig tree. Ngedehopped about madly among the branches. He then settledon one branch and cocked his head at Gingile as if to say,“Here it is! Come now! What is taking you so long?” Gingilecouldn’t see any bees from under the tree, but he trustedNgede.

Então Gingile colocou sua lança de caça embaixo da árvore,recolheu alguns galhos secos e fez uma fogueirinha.Quando o fogo estava queimando bem, colocou uma varaseca e comprida no centro da fogueira. Esta madeira eraespecialmente conhecida por fazer muita fumaça enquantoqueimava. Ele começou a subir, segurando a ponta fria davara com seus dentes.

So Gingile put down his hunting spear under the tree,gathered some dry twigs and made a small fire. When thefire was burning well, he put a long dry stick into the heartof the fire. This wood was especially known to make lots ofsmoke while it burned. He began climbing, holding the coolend of the smoking stick in his teeth.

Logo ele pode ouvir o zumbido das abelhas ocupadas. Elasestavam entrando e saindo de uma brecha no tronco daárvore – sua colméia. Quando Gingile alcançou a colméia,ele empurrou a ponta enfumaçada da vara na brecha dotronco. As abelhas saíram apressadas, zangadas emalvadas. Elas voaram para longe porque não gostaram dafumaça – mas não antes de darem ferroadas dolorosas emGingile.

Soon he could hear the loud buzzing of the busy bees. Theywere coming in and out of a hollow in the tree trunk – theirhive. When Gingile reached the hive he pushed the smokingend of the stick into the hollow. The bees came rushing out,angry and mean. They flew away because they didn’t likethe smoke – but not before they had given Gingile somepainful stings!

Quando as abelhas estavam fora da colméia, Gingileempurou suas mãos para dentro do ninho. Pegoupunhados pesados do favo, pingando de rico mel e cheio delarvas brancas e gordas. Ele colocou o favo de melcuidadosamente na bolsa que levava no seu ombro ecomeçou a descer da árvore.

When the bees were out, Gingile pushed his hands into thenest. He took out handfuls of the heavy comb, dripping withrich honey and full of fat, white grubs. He put the combcarefully in the pouch he carried on his shoulder, andstarted to climb down the tree.

Ngede observou tudo o que Gingile estava fazendo. Estavaesperando que ele deixasse um pedaço grande de favo demel como uma oferta de agradecimento para o pássaro-de-mel. Ngede esvoaçou de galho em galho, cada vez maisperto do chão. Finalmente Gingile chegou no pé da árvore.Ngede pousou em uma rocha perto do menino e esperoupor sua recompensa.

Ngede eagerly watched everything that Gingile was doing.He was waiting for him to leave a fat piece of honeycomb asa thank-you offering to the Honeyguide. Ngede flitteredfrom branch to branch, closer and closer to the ground.Finally Gingile reached the bottom of the tree. Ngedeperched on a rock near the boy and waited for his reward.

Mas, Gingile apagou o fogo, pegou sua lança e começou acaminhar para casa, ignorando o pássaro. Ngede gritouenfurecido, “VIC-torr! VIC-torrr!” Gingile parou, olhoufixamente para o pássaro e riu alto. “Você quer um poucode mel, quer, meu amigo? Ah! Mas fiz todo o trabalho elevei todas as ferroadas. Por que dividiria parte desseadorável mel com você?” Então foi embora. Ngede estavafurioso! Isso não era maneira de ser tratado. Mas ele sevingaria.

But, Gingile put out the fire, picked up his spear and startedwalking home, ignoring the bird. Ngede called out angrily,“VIC-torr! VIC-torrr!” Gingile stopped, stared at the littlebird and laughed aloud. “You want some honey, do you, myfriend? Ha! But I did all the work, and got all the stings.Why should I share any of this lovely honey with you?” Thenhe walked off. Ngede was furious! This was no way to treathim! But he would get his revenge.

Um dia, várias semanas depois, Gingile ouviu o chamado demel do Ngede. Lembrou-se do delicioso mel eansiosamente seguiu o pássaro mais uma vez. Depois deguiar Gingile ao longo da borda da floresta, Ngede paroupara descansar em um grande guarda-chuva espinho.“Ahh,” pensou Gingile. “A colméia deve estar nessa árvore.”Ele rapidamente fez uma fogueirinha e começou a subir aárvore com a vara esfumaçada entre seus dentes. Ngedesentou e observou.

One day several weeks later Gingile again heard the honeycall of Ngede. He remembered the delicious honey, andeagerly followed the bird once again. After leading Gingilealong the edge of the forest, Ngede stopped to rest in agreat umbrella thorn. “Ahh,” thought Gingile. “The hivemust be in this tree.” He quickly made his small fire andbegan to climb, the smoking branch in his teeth. Ngede satand watched.

Gingile escalou, imaginando por que não tinha ouvido ohabitual zumbido. “Talvez a colméia esteja no fundo daárvore,” pensou. Ele subiu mais um galho. Mas ao invés deuma colméia, ele estava olhando para um leopardo! Oleopardo estava muito zangado por ter tido seu sonoindelicadamente interrompido. Ele estreitou os olhos, abriua boca e mostrou seus grandes e afiados dentes.

Gingile climbed, wondering why he didn’t hear the usualbuzzing. “Perhaps the hive is deep in the tree,” he thoughtto himself. He pulled himself up another branch. Butinstead of the hive, he was staring into the face of aleopard! Leopard was very angry at having her sleep sorudely interrupted. She narrowed her eyes, opened hermouth to reveal her very large and very sharp teeth.

Antes que o leopardo pudesse dar um golpe, Gingile desceuda árvore correndo. Na pressa ele não viu um galho eaterrizou com um baque forte e torceu seu tornozelo.Afastou-se o mais rápido que pôde. Com sorte, o leopardoestava ainda muito sonolento para perseguí-lo. Ngede, opássaro-de-mel, teve a sua vingança e Gingile aprendeu sualição.

Before Leopard could take a swipe at Gingile, he rusheddown the tree. In his hurry he missed a branch, and landedwith a heavy thud on the ground twisting his ankle. Hehobbled off as fast as he could. Luckily for him, Leopard wasstill too sleepy to chase him. Ngede, the Honeyguide, hadhis revenge. And Gingile learned his lesson.

Assim, quando as crianças de Gingile ouvem a história deNgede, elas têm respeito pelo passarinho. Sempre quecolhem mel, deixam a maior parte do favo para o pássaro-de-mel.

And so, when the children of Gingile hear the story ofNgede they have respect for the little bird. Whenever theyharvest honey, they make sure to leave the biggest part ofthe comb for Honeyguide!
