CAUTION: Foreign Matter on the CCDNikon takes every possible precaution to prevent foreign matter from coming into con-tact with the CCD during production and shipping. The D100, however, is designed tobe used with interchangeable lenses, and foreign matter may enter the camera whenlenses are removed or exchanged. Once inside the camera, this foreign matter mayadhere to the CCD, where it may appear in photographs taken under certain conditions.To prevent foreign matter from entering the camera, do not exchange lenses in dustyenvironments. To protect the camera when no lens is in place, be sure to replace thebody cap provided with the camera, being careful to first remove all dust and other foreignmatter that may be adhering to the body cap.Should foreign matter find its way onto the CCD, clean the CCD as instructed on pages

186187 of this manual, or have the CCD cleaned by authorized Nikon service person-nel. Photographs affected by the presence of foreign matter on the CCD can be re-touched using the clean image options available in some third-party imaging software.

WARNINGSDo not look at the sun through theviewfinderViewing the sun or other strong lightsource through the viewfinder couldcause permanent visual impairment.

Turn off immediately in the eventof malfunctionShould you notice smoke or an un-usual smell coming from the equip-ment or from the AC adapter (avail-able separately), unplug the ACadapter and remove the battery im-mediately, taking care to avoid burns.Continued operation could result ininjury. After removing the battery,take the equipment to a Nikon-autho-rized service center for inspection.

Do not use in the presence of flam-mable gasDo not use electronic equipment inthe presence of flammable gas, as thiscould result in explosion or fire.

Do not place strap around neckPlacing the camera strap around yourneck could result in strangulation.Special care should be taken to avoidplacing the strap around the neck ofan infant or child.

Do not disassemble

Touching the products internal partscould result in injury. In the event ofa malfunction, the product should berepaired only by a qualified technician.Should the product break open as theresult of a fall or other accident, re-move the battery and/or AC adapterand then take the product to a Nikon-authorized service center for inspec-tion.

Observe proper precautions whenhandling batteriesBatteries may leak or explode if im-properly handled. Observe the follow-ing precautions when handling batter-ies for use in this product:

Be sure the product is off before re-placing the battery. If you are using anAC adapter, be sure it is unplugged.

Use only batteries approved for use inthis equipment.

Do not attempt to insert the batteryupside down or backwards.

Do not short or disassemble the bat-tery.

Do not expose the battery to flame orto excessive heat.

Do not immerse in or expose to water.

Batteries are prone to leakage whenfully discharged. To avoid damage tothe product, be sure to remove thebattery when no charge remains.

When the battery is not in use, attachthe terminal cover and store in a coolplace.

Immediately after use, or when theproduct is used on battery power foran extended period, the battery maybecome hot. Before removing thebattery, turn the camera off and allowthe battery to cool.

Discontinue use immediately shouldyou notice any changes in the battery,such as discoloration or deformation.

Use appropriate cablesWhen connecting cables to the inputand output jacks, use only the cablesprovided or sold by Nikon for the pur-pose, to maintain compliance withproduct regulations.

Keep out of reach of childrenParticular care should be taken to pre-vent infants from putting the batteryor other small parts into their mouths.

Removing memory cardsMemory cards may become hot dur-ing use. Observe due caution whenremoving memory cards from thecamera.

CD-ROMsThe CD-ROMs on which the softwareand manuals are distributed shouldnot be played back on audio CDequipment. Playing CD-ROMs on anaudio CD player could cause hearingloss or damage the equipment.

Observe caution when operatingthe flashUsing the flash close to your subjectseyes could cause temporary visual im-pairment. Particular care should beobserved if photographing infants,when the flash should be no less thanone meter (39) from the subject.

When using the viewfinderWhen operating the diopter adjust-ment control with your eye to theviewfinder, care should be taken notto put your finger in your eye acciden-tally.Avoid contact with liquid crystalShould the monitor break, care shouldbe taken to avoid injury due to brokenglass and to prevent liquid crystal fromthe monitor touching the skin or en-tering the eyes or mouth.

Do not dropThe product may malfunction if subjectedto strong shocks or vibration.

Keep dryThis product is not waterproof, and maymalfunction if immersed in water or ex-posed to high levels of humidity. Rustingof the internal mechanism can cause irrepa-rable damage.

Avoid sudden changes in temperatureSudden changes in temperature, such asoccur when entering or leaving a heated

building on a cold day, can cause conden-sation inside the device. To prevent con-densation, place the device in a carryingcase or a plastic bag before exposing it tosudden changes in temperature.

Keep away from strong magnetic fieldsDo not use or store this device in the vicin-ity of equipment that generates strongelectromagnetic radiation or magnetic

fields. Strong static charges or the mag-netic fields produced by equipment such asradio transmitters could interfere with themonitor, damage data stored on thememory card, or affect the products inter-nal circuitry.

Do not touch the shutter curtainThe shutter curtain is extremely thin andeasily damaged. Under no circumstances

should you exert pressure on the curtain,poke it with cleaning tools, or subject it topowerful air currents from a blower. Theseactions could scratch, deform, or tear thecurtain.

Handle all moving parts with careDo not apply force to the battery-chamber,card-slot, or connector covers. These partsare especially susceptible to damage.

Cleaning When cleaning the camera body, use a

blower to remove dust and lint, then wipegently with a soft, dry cloth. After usingyour camera at the beach or seaside, wipeoff any sand or salt using a cloth lightlydampened with pure water and then dryyour camera thoroughly. In rare in-stances, static electricity produced by abrush or cloth may cause the LCD displaysto light up or darken. This does not indi-cate a malfunction, and the display willshortly return to normal.

When cleaning the lens and mirror, re-member that these elements are easilydamaged. Dust and lint should be gen-tly removed with a blower. When usingan aerosol blower, keep the can vertical(tilting the can could result in liquid beingsprayed on the mirror). If you do get afingerprint or other stain on the lens,apply a small amount of lens cleaner to asoft cloth and wipe the lens carefully.

Storage To prevent mold or mildew, store the

camera in a dry, well-ventilated area. Ifyou will not be using the product for longperiods, remove the battery to preventleakage and store the camera in a plasticbag containing a desiccant. Do not, how-ever, store the camera case in a plasticbag, as this may cause the material to de-teriorate. Note that desiccant graduallyloses its capacity to absorb moisture andshould be replaced at regular intervals.

Do not store the camera with naphtha orcamphor moth balls, close to equipmentthat produces strong magnetic fields, or

in areas subject to extremes of tempera-ture, for example near a space heater orin a closed vehicle on a hot day.

To prevent mold or mildew, take the cam-era out of storage at least once a month.Turn the camera on and release the shut-ter a few times before putting the cam-era away again.

Store the battery in a cool, dry place.Replace the terminal cover before puttingthe battery away.

Notes on the monitor The monitor may contain a few pixels that

are always lit or that do not light. This isa characteristic common to all TFT LCDmonitors and does not indicate a mal-function. Images recorded with the prod-uct will not be affected.

Images in the monitor may be difficult tosee in a bright light.

Do not apply pressure to the monitor; thiscould cause damage or malfunction.Dust or lint on the monitor can be re-moved with a blower. Stains can be re-moved by rubbing the surface lightly with

a soft cloth or chamois leather. Should the monitor break, care should betaken to avoid injury due to broken glassand to prevent the liquid crystal from themonitor touching the skin or entering theeyes or mouth.

Replace the monitor cover when trans-porting the camera or leaving it unat-tended.

Turn the product off before removingor disconnecting the power sourceDo not unplug the product or remove thebattery while the product is on, or while im-ages are being recorded or deleted. Forc-ibly cutting power to the product in thesecircumstances could result in loss of data orin damage to product memory or internalcircuitry. To prevent an accidental interrup-tion of power, avoid carrying the productfrom one location to another while the ACadapter is connected.

Batteries When you turn the device on, check the

battery-level displayed in the controlpanel to determine whether the batteryneeds to be replaced. The battery needsto be replaced when the battery-level in-dicator is flashing.

Ready a spare battery and keep it fullycharged when taking photographs on im-portant occasions. Depending on your lo-cation, you may find it difficult to pur-chase replacement batteries on shortnotice.

On cold days, the capacity of batteriestends to decrease. Be sure the battery isfully charged before taking photographsoutside in cold weather. Keep a sparebattery in a warm place and exchange thetwo as necessary. Once warmed, a coldbattery may recover some of its charge.

Should the battery terminals becomedirty, wipe them off with a clean, dry clothbefore use.

After removing the battery from the cam-era, be sure to replace the terminal cover.

Memory cards Turn the power off before inserting or re-

moving memory cards. Inserting or re-moving cards with the power on couldrender them unusable.

I n s e r t m e m o r ycards as shown inthe illustration atright. Insertingcards upside downor backwards coulddamage the cam-era or the card.

Overview About This Manual

This manual is designed to help you enjoy taking photographs with the ad-vanced Nikon D100 single-lens reflex (SLR) digital camera. First-time userswho cant wait to experience the simplicity and immediacy of digital photog-

raphy can follow the step-by-step instructions in the Quick Start Guide orread First Steps and Tutorial in this manual, referring to Getting to Knowthe Camera for information on the location of camera controls and displays.Once you have mastered the basics, detailed information on when and howto use the various camera settings can be found in Taking Photographs andMenu Guide. Information on what to do with your pictures once you havefinished shooting is available in Connections, which describes how to con-nect your camera to a television, video-cassette recorder, or computer.

Principal Features The D100 is equipped with a large (23.7 ! 15.6 mm/0.9 ! 0.6) CCD with

6.1 million effective pixels capable of producing photographs in three dif-ferent sizes (3008 ! 2000, 2240 ! 1488, and 1504 ! 1000 pixels).

Proven elements of the D1-series 3D digital matrix image control, includ-ing precise exposure control based on 3D matrix metering and TTL whitebalance for optimum color temperature measurements, have been further

improved for unerring color reproduction and smooth tonal transitions. Three color modes, adapted to sRGB or Adobe color spaces, are availablefor different work flows.

Photographs are stored in a temporary memory buffer during shooting,allowing up to six photographs (or four RAW images) to be recorded at arate of approximately three frames per second.

Noise reduction is available to reduce the occurrence of randomly-spaced,brightly-colored pixels at shutter speeds of around 1 / 2 s or slower.

The D100s built-in Speedlight ensures that you will never miss the chancefor that perfect shot, even when lighting is poor. The camera is equipped with an automatic sensitivity adjustment function

that helps ensure optimal exposure when correct exposure can not beachieved at current settings.

Twelve-bit output from the cameras CCD can be saved without modifica-tion as high-quality RAW data.

The optional MB-D100 multi function battery pack can expand your cameras

potential with voice-memo recording and a shutter-release button andcommand dials for taking photographs in vertical (portrait) orientation.

The Viewfinder Display

No BatteryWhen the battery is totally exhausted or no battery is inserted, the display in the viewfinderwill dim. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction. The viewfinder displaywill return to normal when a fully-charged battery is inserted.

The Viewfinder DisplayThe focus-area and grid-line displays in the viewfinder (advanced focusing screen dis-play) tend to brighten at high temperatures and to darken and exhibit slower response

times at low temperatures. The other displays in the viewfinder tend darken and ex-hibit slower response times at high temperatures. All displays will return to normal atroom temperature.

Advanced Focusing Screen Display

When the background is bright, the active focus area ( 64) is highlighted in black.When the background is dark, the active focus area is highlighted briefly in red asneeded to establish contrast with the background ( Vari-Brite focus areas), making iteasier to identify the selected focus area. The viewfinder is also equipped with on-demand grid lines. When ON is selected for Custom Setting 19 ( Grid Display ;157), a reference grid is superimposed over the display in the viewfinder. This grid is auseful aid when composing landscape shots or when tilting or shifting a PC Nikkor lens.Owing to the characteristics of this type of viewfinder display, you may notice fine lines

radiating outwards from the selected focus area, or that the display in the viewfinderturns red when the selected focus area is highlighted. These phenomena are normaland do not indicate a malfunction.

Step 1Attach the Camera StrapAttach the camera strap securely to the two eyelets on the camera body asshown below.

The Monitor Cover

A clear plastic cover (the BM-2 LCD monitor cover) isprovided with the camera to keep the monitor clean,and to protect the monitor when the camera is not inuse or when you are transporting the camera. To re-move the monitor cover, hold the camera firmly and pullthe bottom of the cover gently outwards as shown atright (1). Once the cover is unlatched, you can move itslightly away from the monitor (2) and then remove it asshown (3).

To replace the cover for shooting or storage, insert thetwo projections on the top of the cover into the match-ing indentations above the camera monitor (1), thenpress the bottom of the cover until you hear it click intoplace (2).

2 .1 Charge the batteryThe EN-EL3 battery supplied with your camera is not fully charged atshipment. To maximize shooting time, batteries should be fully chargedbefore use. Step 5Attach a LensWe recommend that you use a type G or type D CPU lens to take full advan-tage of the features your camera offers.

5 .2 Attach a lensKeeping the mounting mark on the lensaligned with the mounting mark on the cam-era body, position the lens in the camerasbayonet mount. Being careful not to pressthe lens-release button, rotate the lenscounter-clockwise until it clicks into place.

Protect the Camera from Dirt and DustAny dust, dirt, or other foreign matter inside your cam-era could show up as specks or blotches in your photo-graphs or the viewfinder display. When no lens is inplace, keep the lens mount covered with the BF-1A bodycap supplied with your camera. When exchanging lensor replacing the body cap, keep the lens mount pointeddown.

5 .3 Lock aperture at the minimum settingThis step is not necessary if you are using a type G lens (type G lensesare not equipped with an aperture ring). If you are using a lens of

another type, lock aperture at the minimum setting (highest f/-number).

If you do not perform this step when using a CPU lens, the aperture

displays in the control panel and viewfinder will show a blinkingwhen the camera is turned on. Photographs can not be taken until youhave turned the camera off and locked aperture at the highest f/-num-ber.

Detaching the LensBe sure the camera is off when removing or exchanginglenses. To remove the lens, press and hold the lens-release button while turning the lens clockwise.

Non-CPU LensesNon-CPU lenses can only be used when the function dial is set to M (manual exposuremode). In other exposure modes, the shutter release will be disabled. When a non-CPU lens is attached, the camera exposure meters will not function, and the aperturedisplays in the control panel and viewfinder will show to indicate that aperture canonly be set using the lens aperture ring.

Memory cards must be formatted before first use. Note that formattingmemory cards permanently deletes any data they may contain . Be sure

to copy any photographs and other data you wish to keep to a com-puter before proceeding ( 169).

To format the card, turn the camera on and hold the ( and )buttons down simultaneously for approximately two seconds. A blink-ing will appear in the shutter-speed display and the frame countwill blink. Pressing both buttons together a second time will format thememory card. Press any other button to exit without formatting.

During formatting, the letters will be appear in the frame-countdisplay. Do not remove the card or battery or unplug the AC adapter

(available separately) during formatting . When formatting is complete,the frame-count display will show the number of photographs that canbe recorded at current settings.

No Memory CardIf no memory card is inserted in the camera when acharged EN-EL3 battery is inserted or the camera is pow-ered by an AC adapter, will appear control panelexposure-count display. When the camera is on andindicators are displayed in the viewfinder, the exposure-count display in the viewfinder will also show .

Removing Memory CardsMemory cards may be hot after use. Observe due caution when removing memorycards from the camera.

Removing Memory CardsMemory cards can be removed without loss of data whenthe camera is off. Before removing the memory card,wait for the green card access lamp next to the card slotcover to go out and then turn the camera off. Pressingthe memory card slot cover latch, open the card slotcover and press the eject button to partially eject thecard (1). You can then remove the card by hand (2). DoNOT attempt to remove the card while the access lamp ison . Failure to observe this precaution could result inloss of data or in damage to the camera or card.

Taking Your First Photographs 2

Non-CPU LensesExposure mode P (auto multi program) is only available when the lens mounted on the

camera is a CPU lens. When a non-CPU lens is used, will flash in the aperturedisplays in the control panel and viewfinder and the shutter can not be released. Non-CPU lenses can only be used in manual exposure mode (exposure mode M).

2 .2 Set the shooting mode to single frame ( 41)Hold the mode-dial lock release down (1)and turn the shooting mode dial (2) to

(single frame). This sets the camera to takeone photograph each time the shutter-re-lease button is pressed.

2 .3 Set the focus mode to single-servo autofocus ( 63)Turn the focus-mode selector until it clicksinto place pointing to S (single-servoautofocus). At this setting, the camera willautomatically focus on the subject in the se-lected focus area when the shutter-releasebutton is pressed halfway. Pictures can onlybe taken when the camera is in focus.

2 .4 Choose matrix as the metering method ( 75)Rotate the metering selector to (matrixmetering). Matrix metering uses informa-tion from all areas of the frame to deter-

mine exposure, ensuring optimal results forthe entire frame.

2 .5 Set the function dial to P (auto multi program; 77)Before shooting, rotate the function dial toP (auto multi program). At this setting, thecamera will automatically adjust shutter-speedand aperture according to a built-in expo-

sure program, producing optimal exposurein most situations.

Basic Photography3Step 3Frame a PhotographTo prevent blurred photographs caused by unsteady hands (camera shake),hold the camera steadily in both hands, with your elbows propped lightly

against your torso for support. Hold the handgrip in your right hand andcradle the camera body or lens with your left.

The recommended stance for taking photographs is with one foot a half pace

in front of the other and your upper body stable.

Using the Diopter ControlWhen operating the diopter control with your eye to the viewfinder, care should betaken to avoid accidentally putting your fingers or fingernails in your eye.

Viewfinder Focus

The viewfinder is equipped with diopter adjustment toaccommodate individual differences in vision. To adjustviewfinder focus, slide the diopter adjustment controlup and down until the focus brackets in the viewfinderare in sharp focus. If necessary, you can remove therubber viewfinder eyepiece cup when adjusting diopter;when replacing the cup, the lettered face should bedown.

Diopter can be adjusted in the range 2 m1

to +1 m1

. Corrective lenses (availableseparately; 180) allow diopters of 5 m 1 to +3 m 1. The rubber viewfinder eyepiececup must be removed when using diopter adjustment lenses.

The optional MB-D100multi function batterypack is equipped with ashutter-release button fortaking photographs inportrait (tall) orientation.

4Step 4FocusIn single-servo AF, the camera focuses on the sub-

ject in the selected focus area when the shutter-

release button is pressed halfway. After centeringthe focus brackets on your subject, press the shut-ter-release button halfway and check focus in theviewfinder. If the subject is dark, the AF-assist il-luminator will light automatically to assist with the autofocus operation.

The Function DialPictures can only be taken when the function dial is set to P, S, A, or M. At othersettings, the shutter release will be disabled.

Viewfinder Frame Coverage

Approximately 95% of the image exposed on the CCD is visible through the viewfinder.The view through the viewfinder shows slightly less than appears in the final photo-graph.

5Step 5Check ExposureWith the shutter-release button pressed halfway,check the shutter-speed and aperture indicators

in the viewfinder. If the photo would be under- orover-exposed at current settings, one of the fol-lowing indicators will appear in either the shutter-speed or aperture display.

Indicator Meaning

Photo will be overexposed. Use a Neutral Density (ND) filter.

Shutter Speed and Camera ShakeTo prevent blurring caused by camera shake, the shutter speed should be faster thanthe inverse of the focal length of the lens, in seconds (for example, if a lens has a focallength of 50 mm, shutter speed should be faster than 1 / 50 s). Use of a tripod is recom-mended when shooting at slower shutter speeds. To prevent blur, try raising the built-in Speedlight (see following page) or increasing sensitivity ( 48).

3ISO Auto ( 148)When ON is selected for Custom Setting 3 ( ISO Auto ), the camera will automaticallyvary sensitivity from the value selected by the user to help ensure optimum exposure.

9EV Step ( 151)By default, shutter speed and aperture are shown in increments equivalent to 1 / 3 EV.Using Custom Setting 9, you can change the increment to 1 / 2 EV.

When lighting is poor, shutter speed slows and photographs may be blurred. At shut-ter speeds slower than 1 /

60s, you can use the built-in Speedlight to prevent blur. A flash

can also be used to fill in (illuminate) shadows and back-lit subjects ( 94). To usethe built-in Speedlight:

a Raise the SpeedlightPress the Speedlight lock release. The Speedlight willpop up and begin charging.

b Set the flash-sync mode to front-curtain syncPress the button and rotate the main command dial until is displayed in thecontrol panel.

c Check the flash-ready indicator in the viewfinderPress the shutter-release button halfway and checkthe flash-ready indicator in the viewfinder. Whenthe built-in Speedlight is raised, photographs can onlybe taken when the flash-ready indicator is displayed.If the flash-ready indicator is not displayed, removeyour finger briefly from the shutter-release buttonand try again.

When the Speedlight Is Not in UseTo save battery power when the Speedlight is not in use, return it to the closed positionby pressing it lightly downward until you hear the latch click into place.

Choosing a Shooting ModeSingle Frame, Continuous, or Self-Timer

Your choice of shooting mode determines how the camera takes photographs:one at a time, in a continuous sequence, or with a delay after the shutter-release button is pressed.

To choose a shooting mode, press the shootingmode dial lock button and turn the shooting modedial to the desired setting. The following modesare available:

Mode Description

Single frameThe camera takes one photograph each time the shutter releasebutton is pressed all the way down.

Continuous

Camera records photographs at a rate of about three frames persecond * while the shutter-release button is held down. Up to sixframes (four frames in RAW mode) can be recorded before tempo-rary memory buffer ( 42) fills. When noise reduction ( 149) ison, memory buffer holds up to three photographs (two photographsin RAW mode). Additional photographs can be taken as soon asenough memory is available in buffer. This setting can be used to

capture a fleeting expression on a portrait subject, or to photographa subject that is moving unpredictably.

Self-timerUse the self-timer to reduce blurring caused by camera shake or toappear in photographs you take yourself ( 108).

*Average obtained at 20 C (68 F) with manual focus, manual exposure, a shutterspeed of 1 / 250 s or faster, and memory remaining in the buffer.

Buffer SizeDuring shooting, or while the shutter-release button ispressed halfway, the number of images that can be storedin the memory buffer at current settings is shown in theexposure-count displays in the control panel and

The Memory BufferThe camera is equipped with a memory buffer for temporary storage of photos duringshooting, allowing you to take several photographs in succession without waiting forthe images to be transferred to the memory card. The buffer can hold up to six frames(four in RAW mode), or three frames (two RAW images) when noise reduction ( 149)is on. When the buffer is full, the shutter will be disabled until enough data have beentransferred to the memory card to make room for another photograph. In continuousmode, you can continue to take photographs as long as the shutter-release button isheld down, although the rate at which photographs are taken will drop once the bufferhas filled.While photographs are recorded to the memory card, the access lamp next to the

memory card slot will light. Depending on the number of the images in the buffer,recording may take from a few seconds to a few minutes. Do not turn the camera off,remove the memory card, or remove or disconnect the power source until the accesslamp has gone out . If the camera is turned off while data remain in the buffer, only theimage currently being transferred to the memory card will be saved. All other images inthe buffer will be lost . If the battery is exhausted while images remain in the buffer, theshutter release will be disabled and all images will be transferred to the memory card.

Large-Capacity Memory CardsWhen enough memory remains on the memory card torecord a thousand or more pictures at current settings,the number of exposures remaining will be shown inthousands, rounded down to the nearest hundred (e.g.,if there is room for approximately 1,260 exposures, theexposure count display will show 1.2 K).

Number of Exposures RemainingThe number of exposures remaining shown in the exposure count displays in the con-trol panel and viewfinder is only an approximation. The number of compressed NEF orJPEG images that can be stored on a memory card depends on the subject and compo-sition of each photograph. In general, the more detailed the image, the larger theresulting file and the fewer the images that can be stored.

Together, image quality and size determine how much space each photo-graph occupies on the memory card. This in turn determines the total num-ber of photographs that can be stored. For an understanding of how the

various size and quality options affect the number of images that can bestored, view the following table, which shows the approximate number ofimages that can be stored on a 96 MB card at different combinations of qual-ity and size.

* All figures are approximate. Approximate time needed to record all images once the memory buffer has filled.

Actual time required varies with make of card.** When opened in Nikon View 5 or Nikon Capture 3, NEF images are 3,008 ! 2,000

pixels in size. File size of compressed NEF (RAW) images is approximately fifty to sixty percent of

Option Description

TIFF-RGB Images are saved in uncompressed TIFF-RGB at a color depth of eightbits per channel (24-bit color).

JPEG Fine Images are saved in JPEG format at a compression ratio of roughly1 :4.

JPEG Normal Images are saved in JPEG format at a compression ratio of roughly1 : 8 .

JPEG Basic Images are saved in JPEG format at a compression ratio of roughly1 :16.

Image QualityThe image quality setting determines the file type and compression ratio usedto store photographs. The following options are available:

File NamesPhotographs taken with the D100 are stored as image files with names of the formDSC_nnnn . xxx , where nnnn is a four-digit number between 0001 and 9999 assigned

automatically in ascending order by the camera, and xxx is one of the following threeletter extensions: .NEF for NEF images, .TIF for TIFF-RGB, and .JPG for JPEGimages.

NEF (Raw)

Raw 12-bit data from the CCD are saved directly to the memorycard in Nikon Electronic Image Format (NEF). NEF files can only beviewed in Nikon View 5 or Nikon Capture 3 ( 169). Two NEFmodes are available: NEF (Raw)

In this mode, NEF images are not compressed, reducing the time

needed to process images before they are saved to the memorycard but increasing file size. Comp. NEF (Raw)

In this mode, NEF images are compressed using a virtually loss-less algorithm that reduces file size by approximately fifty to sixtypercent without affecting image quality. More time is required toprocess images before they are saved to the memory card.
