in America and Europe, in

addition to the Ethylene

XXI Project in Mexico and

the Renewable Chemical

Business. A Member since

2002, he also participated

in the petrochemical

acquisition processes,

assuming the presidency of

Quattor in 2010.

At ETH, his main

challenge will be

consolidating the company’s

presence in the national

market and implementing

the internationalization

process.

MEETING WITH MEMBERS

On February 29, Members

from the São Paulo Office

gathered in the auditorium

of the Eldorado Business

Tower for the presentation

by the new EL.

Mendonça opened

his presentation with a

summarized version of his

life story and career. “Over

the past four years, ETH has

become a major company

and currently has the world’s

best sugarcane planting

program,” he said. “It is a

successful company.”

The EL also took

advantage of the

opportunity to share his

first ideas about the ETH

strategy and answered

Members’ questions about

the next steps for the

company, which begins its

internationalization process

this year. “We plan to seek

new synergies and business

possibilities, while remaining

fully focused on the ‘key’

businesses,” he said. “We have

a major challenge ahead.”

Mendonça will continue

his integration process with

visits to the agroindustrial

units. “I have always been

passionate about the

operation,” he confessed.

With 15,000 Members

and nine plants installed in

five centers, located in the

states of São Paulo, Mato

Grosso, Mato Grosso do

Sul and Goiás, ETH hopes

to achieve an installed

industrial milling capacity of

40 million tons of sugarcane

per year and production of

three billion liters of ethanol

by 2014.

“ETH has the world’s largest sugarcane planting program. It is a successful company,” said Luiz Mendonça during a meeting with Members in São Paulo

the expansion and

modernization of REPAR

since 2007, the consortium

also built new Gasoline

Portfolio and Coke

Portfolio Units, as well as

the refinery’s Hydrogen

Generation unit.

the sulfur content of diesel

oil and has the capacity

to hydro-treat 6,000 m3

the quality of the diesel

distributed in the market in

compliance with applicable

environmental standards.

One of the greatest

challenges faced during the

plant installation was the

commissioning, in which

the potential risks inherent

to the process required a

team with a high degree

of technical qualification.

During the pre-operation

and unit startup phases,

the attention was focused

entirely on providing

support to the operation.

“The team’s unity was

decisive, since we

maintained our professional

pride, overcame difficulties

and were able to be

successful,” said João Xavier,

Commissioning Manager.

According to David

Esberard, Contract Director,

the unit startup reflects

a sensation of mission

accomplished. “I have been

following the project since

the ground-leveling in

2007, and it is gratifying

to know that our efforts

will contribute toward the

country’s progress,” he said.

Henry Müller, Administrative

and Financial Manager,

shared his pride in being

part of the consortium: “I

am extremely pleased to

have participated in the

development’s completion,”

said Müller.

According to Fernando

Fernandes, Production

Manager, his biggest

achievement was being able

to lead such a committed

team. “Everyone was

involved with the same

purpose in mind,” said

Fernandes.

The installation work for

the new unit also helped

contribute toward the

training of people such as

Paulo Linhares, Planning

Coordinator. “The possibility

of working with disciplines

different than my own area

of training made CONPAR

my biggest professional

challenge yet,” revealed the

civil engineer.

For many Members,

the consortium served as

a first work opportunity.

“It was my first project

and my great personal

accomplishment, since I

made some good friends,

learned about several

different cultures and added

all of it to my own growth,”

said Claudia Machado,

Technical Assistant in the

Supply area.

LEGACIES FOR THE

POPULATION

contract in 2007, CONPAR

has interacted with the

communities from the

project’s area of influence

and develops educational,

Developed from 2009 to 2011, Acreditar trained more than 1,100 people, 750 of whom were hired by the consortium

cultural and training

programs. In 2011, the

consortium’s social activities

were considered the “Best

of the Year” by the Araucária

residents through an opinion

poll. “We have always

believed that we could make

the difference with the

social projects that valued,

motivated and educated

society for a better future,”

said David Esberard.

Created at the end of

2009 in partnership with

the Municipal Government

of Araucária, the Continued

Professional Qualification

Program - Acreditar (Believe)

received more than 2,500

applications and qualified

over 1,000 people under the

Basic and Technical modules

in the trades of bricklayer,

carpenter, assembler, welder,

assembly mechanic and

scaffold assembler. Over 750

participants were contracted

by CONPAR.

The consortium also

One of the consortium’s social initiatives was the inauguration of the Reading Room in the city of Araucária

launched the free digital

Caia na Rede (“Hit the

Net”) Program in 2009,

involving the installation

of IT laboratories at five

entities located in the

municipality. Over 2,000

children, youth and adults

from the communities

have already taken part

in the digital literacy

courses.

With aims of

collaborating toward

regional development,

CONPAR joined forces

with the Paraná Support

Services to Micro and

Small Companies (SEBRAE)

and the Araucária

City Government

to restructure the

city’s street market.

Approximately 30 fair

workers completed

courses that developed

concepts of associativism,

cooperativism, planning,

budget control, customer

assistance and relations

and the organization of

produce and vegetables.

In order to promote

the habit of reading

among children from

the communities, the

consortium inaugurated

a reading room at the

Dom Inácio Krause Health

Center last year with the

support of the Municipal

Department of Health. The

space, which hosts the

entity’s Reading Project,

assists an average of 35

people.

“In addition to the

satisfaction at concluding

the new unit, we are

pleased to know that

these projects will

continue serving the

residents,” concluded the

Contract Director.

Last year, the Santo

Antônio Hydroelectric Power

Plant in Rondônia, which

has Odebrecht Energia as

an investor, recycled more

than 15,000 tons of waste –

including common garbage

(paper and plastic) and

industrial garbage (leftover

concrete, steel scrap and

pieces of wood). The volume

represents 82% of the total

generated by the construction

work during the period.

This work is undertaken

at the Waste Management

Center, which is divided into

environments for each type of

material to be recycled at the

construction site itself and at

other sites or is discarded. The

utensils that are not reused,

such as metal scrap, tires,

plastic and paper, are sold to

recycling cooperatives.

With the paper recycling,

over 5,200 trees have been

saved since the installation of

the construction site in 2008.

Santo Antônio HPP: Reference in Waste Managementresidual wood – the organic

recycling process – forms

the fertilizer used in the

project’s seedling greenhouse

designed to recover

degraded areas.

The waste that makes

up the so-called common

garbage, such as toilet paper

and disposable cups, is sent

to the sanitary landfill cell.

The hospital garbage and

that contaminated with oil

is incinerated in a piece of

equipment installed at the

construction site itself.

Nelson Alves,

Environmental Manager

at the Santo Antônio Civil

Consortium, stated that the

results are first-of-a-kind

and that the merit goes to

the teams’ actions. “Each

team is responsible for the

waste generated on the

service fronts and we were

only able to recycle because

the Members separate the

materials correctly,” explained

Alves. According to Alves,

the workers are encouraged

to undertake selective

collection.

CHALLENGES OF

MANAGEMENT

At the Santo Antônio

HPP, waste management

is the result of the

planning performed

In 2011, the Santo Antônio HPP reused more than 80% of the garbage generated for the entire project

during the installation of

the construction site, when

all of the construction

processes were analyzed to

identify possible generated

waste, quantity, temporary

destination, transportation

and final destination. Based

on the mapping of the areas,

it was possible to define the

best waste treatment method,

protecting the environment.

According to Alves, since the

very start of the project, the

goal was to create a closed

cycle.

The challenges discovered

at the construction site

included the large volume

of waste generated and the

fragility of the local structure

to receive the materials.

“There was no structure for

the disposal of the hazardous

waste and the nearest site

was Cuiabá, located 1,400 km

away from Porto Velho,” said

Alves. Important initiatives

were created based on this

information.

The project licensed

the first sanitary landfill

in the state of Rondônia,

acquired a hazardous waste

incinerator and two wood

shredders, created the Waste

Management Center with

specific areas for each type of

garbage and began to apply

treatment via bioremediation,

a process used to recover soil

contaminated by oily products.

WATER AND SEWAGE

TREATMENT

In addition to waste

management, the Santo

Antônio HPP treats all of

the sewage produced at the

construction site and all of

the water used – whether for

the plant construction or for

human consumption.

15odebrechtnoticias.com.br / no. 277 / march 2012

The four Water Treatment

Plants (WTP) installed at

the development have the

capacity to treat 560 m3 of

water per hour, enough to

supply a city with 50,000

inhabitants.

The process adopted at the

WTPs is innovative, since it

uses an organic product called

Vet Orgânica – extracted from

the Black Acacia tree bark –

and eliminates the need to

use the chemical component

aluminum sulfate, employed

at conventional plants. In

addition to being efficient, the

compound helps Members

lead more healthy lives.

The water is collected from

the Mato Grosso and São

Domingos streams – both

tributaries of the Madeira

River – through pumping,

and there is no waste since

the use cycle is closed. Even

the silt left over from the

filtering process is reused.

The dirty water is extracted

from it for treatment and the

waste is applied to the areas

recovered by the Degraded

Area Recovery Program

before the soil receives the

seedlings. “The practice

generates an improved

environmental gain,” said

Nelson Alves.

At the construction site,

100% of the sewage is treated

at two Sewage Treatment

Plants (STPs) using the

stabilization lagoon process.

There are two types of

lagoons: the Facultative, in

which the sewage’s organic

load is naturally digested,

and the Aerobic, which uses

the action of ultraviolet

rays to combat the existing

pathogenic organisms.

This process does not use

chemical products, avoiding

environmental impacts.

Odebrecht Angola has signed a contract to

build the infrastructure of the iron mining project

for the company Angola Exploration Mining

Resources S.A. (AEMR), a public-private company

controlled by the Business Conglomerate DT

Group, located in Township of Jamba, Province of

Huila.

For the construction of the infrastructure

and iron ore production and processing plant,

the company expects to generate more than

2,500 direct and indirect job opportunities. It

also expects to require some 3,000 Members for

its operation. “The project will generate work

opportunities and improve the quality of life, not

only for residents of the Jamba municipality, but

also for the population of the neighboring cities,”

said Félix Martins, Contract Director.

The development will also promote the arrival

of investments in the food, hotel, trade and

service areas. “Improvements are planned in the

region’s infrastructure, crude and potable water

distribution, energy generation and distribution

and construction of roads,” said Martins.

During the course of the construction work,

the company plans to develop local labor training

and qualification programs and training focused

on social-environmental education and literacy.

After the project’s conclusion, scheduled for

2014, the construction will begin for the first steel

plant in Angola, which will allow the nation to

join the group of African countries that produce

steel. Over the medium term, it is estimated that

the project will create 8,000 direct and indirect

job opportunities.

New Odebrecht Angola Contract

At Petrobras’ invitation, Odebrecht Oil and Gas

(OOG) presented the initiatives and achievements

of the School in Action program on February 16 in

Macaé, Rio de Janeiro. The initiative is developed

by the company in partnership with the Macaé

City Government and United Nations Educational,

Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The exhibit was held during the Monthly Best

Practices Meeting, organized by Petrobras together

with the participation of different suppliers in

the municipality. The meeting, which gathered

200 people, also involved the discussion of topics

related to Social Responsibility, Health, Workplace

Safety and Environment (SSTMA).

Emile Machado, Social Responsibility

Coordinator at OOG, presented the evolution of

School in Action during a panel on good social

practices. For her, the opportunity to present the

results was quite significant, since it reveals the

program’s strength. “Since its creation in 2007, the

initiative has already assisted more than 62,000

children directly and indirectly,” said Machado.

Involving public, private and philanthropic

initiative, the project stands out for its participative

management system, the capacity for social

mobilization and the results of the community

participation, which led to the expansion of the

actions, structured into three programs: Opening

Spaces (workshops), Professional Qualification and

Hit the Net (digital inclusion).

Maracanã Construction Work 35% Completed

With two years to go until the Soccer World Cup in Brazil, the construction work for the Maracanã Stadium is 35% complete

The remodeling project for the Maracanã

Stadium – which will host the final match of the

2014 World Cup –, currently being undertaken

by Odebrecht Infraestrutura in Rio de Janeiro,

has completed 35% of its activities.

In order to streamline the work, the

construction of the grandstands was divided

into three stages. The structure will consist

of approximately 2,750 precast parts,

manufactured within the construction site itself

and installed with the support of cranes. The in

loco construction activities were also begun for

the upper grandstand, which will overlap the

existing one, bringing the fans closer to the field.

The four access ramps reach the third floor of

the stadium and the construction of the North

Tunnel – which will facilitate vehicle access to

the lawn –has already been concluded. The

60 stadium pillars began to receive the inserts

that will serve as anchorage for the new roof

structure.

The installation of the slabs for the 110 private

boxes began in the East and West sectors and

the construction of the four access towers that

will connect the ground floor to the upper floors

of the stadium are also underway.

A total of 4,200 Members currently work on

the project, whose construction peak, to occur

still this month, should generate 5,200 direct job

opportunities.

The Panama City and Bay Sanitation Project,

developed by Odebrecht Panama, has reached

an important phase in its construction. The

Segments Factory – which produces the rings

that line the tunnel – achieved its production

goal of 40,900 parts.

For a 20-month period, approximately

50 Members dedicated their efforts to

manufacturing these rings that form the

Interceptor Tunnel – one of the development’s

most important components. With the

conclusion of this phase, 80% of the tunnel

construction activities have been finalized.

The Interceptor Tunnel is being excavated

with a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) that uses

the EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) methodology,

working at a depth of between 16 and 23

meters. Workers have already excavated 6.5 km

of the total extension of 8.1 km. It is expected

that the entire project will be completed 10

months ahead of schedule, which was originally

estimated at 45 months.

Members of the Segments Factory will be

transferred to the Panama Subway Line One

project, which consists of a 7-km tunnel that is

also being excavated with the TBM.

On February 2, Renato Baiardi, member of

the Odebrecht S.A. Board of Directors, met with

youth from the Odebrecht Infraestrutura

PROSUB-EBN project for an informal chat

about his experience and 45-year career at the

Organization.

Baiardi reported his main challenges and

achievements, what he learned during moments

of crisis and about what it means to be Leader

based on the Odebrecht Entrepreneurial

Technology concept. “A true Leader is someone

who is concerned with the development of those

he or she leads, who is happy with the success

and development of those who work with him

or her,” said Baiardi. “It is impossible be a leader

in the full sense of this concept, without being a

Leader Educator.”

He also emphasized that the best thing that

the youth can do to grow at the Organization

is to always seek a great Leader. “Identifying a

Leader Educator is something very important for

your training,” he said. “It doesn’t matter whether

you are abroad or in Brazil: look for a Leader

who inspires you and challenges you.” According

to Baiardi, among all of the leaders, Norberto

Odebrecht was the one who taught him the

most: “There was not one time that I was with Dr.

Norberto that I did not learn something.”

About his career development, Renato Baiardi

emphasized the following: “An entrepreneur who

is always concerned with learning and doing

better than before is the one who has a long life

at the Organization.”

At the end of the conversation, Baiardi made it

a point to highlight TEO as Odebrecht’s greatest

asset. “The purpose of my visit was to bring a bit

of culture to you,” he said. “We need to practice

TEO in order to ensure that the Organization

continues to be a company that is different from

the others.”

The government-owned bank Banco do

Brasil and the Pratigi Environmental Protection

Area Rural Producers’ Cooperative (COOPRAP)

established a commercial partnership that will

facilitate the sale of the handicrafts produced

from piassaba fiber.

Through the Sustainability Store, the financial

institution is promoting the sale of over 3,000

handicraft items on its website, primarily those

materials for the office and kitchen. It is estimated

that the articles will be available for purchase still

during the month of March.

The Sustainability Store, an initiative of Banco

do Brasil, was created in order to sell the products

created by the communities assisted under

the Sustainable Regional Development (DRS)

program. This strategy supports economically

feasible, socially just and environmentally correct

production activities, observing and respecting

cultural diversity. “We will also be benefitted

even more by the job opportunities and added

value given to our products,” said cooperative

member Leonaldo dos Santos, a resident of

the community of São Francisco, located in the

municipality of Nilo Peçanha in Bahia.

The partnership between Banco do Brasil

and the cooperatives associated with the

Bahia Southern Lowlands Environmental

Protection Area Mosaic Integrated and

Sustainable Development Program (PDIS),

supported by the Odebrecht Foundation

and of which COOPRAP is part, began in

2009. When the agreement became official,

the members came to have regular access to

rural credit via the National Family Farming

Strengthening Program (PRONAF). In two

years, the cooperatives raised over R$ 8 million,

benefitting 399 producers.
