OnNovember28,2009,duringabirdsurveyat“As‑sentamentoVilaAmazônia”(02°37’56”S;56°37’01”W),inthemunicipalityofParintins,StateofAmazonas,threeadult individuals of A. hyacinthinus were observed andphotographedwhile flyingoveranopenfield.Thema‑cawslandedinalargetreeontheforestborder(Figure1),andremainedcallingandinteractingwitheachotherforover fiveminutes, flyingoff to the east afterwards.NootherrecordswithA. hyacinthinuswereobatinedatthislocalityinthesubsequentdays,despiteourefforts.Thisrepresents the first published record of A. hyacinthinusfor the Brazilian State of Amazonas, indicating a widedistribution in southeastern Amazonia than previouslythought.

TheHyacinthMacaw,Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus,isthelargestrepresentativeofthePsittacidaefamily,withover1minlength.ItoccursmainlyinCentralBrazilandadjacentareasofBoliviaandParaguay(Sick1997,Alva‑renga2007).Duetoalargereductioninpopulationsizeoverthelastcentury,conservationprograms,suchastheHyacinthMacawProjecthavetriedtomovethisbirdoutof the Brazilian list of endangered species (Marini andGarcia2005),butBirdLifeInternational(2009)stillre‑gardsthisspeciesas“Endangered”duetoongoinghunt‑ingandillegaltrafficking.
According to Olmos (2005), the distribution ofA. hyacinthinusinBraziliscenteredinthePantanal,withscattered populations in the Cerrado and southern ofAmazonia,where itprefersopen forest typesandclear‑ings. In the Pantanal, A. hyacinthinus roosts and nestsinlargetreessuchasSterculia striata(Guedes2006)andfeedsoffruitsofbasicallytwopalmspecies:Scheelea phal-erataandAcrocomia aculeata(Cardozoet al.2000,PintoandRibeiro2009).
IntheAmazon,thisspecieshasbeenrecordedintheBrazilian states of Mato Grosso,Tocantins, Maranhão,andPará(PachecoandOlmos,2005,Guedeset al.2006,Birdlife International,FávaroandFlores2009), includ‑ingabreedingpopulationatSerradosCarajás,southernPará reported by Presti et al.
