Europa em Guimarães 2012

Guimarães 2012 Capital Europeia da Cultura não deixa passar em branco o Dia da Europa enquanto efeméride, como não ignora a Europa em nenhum dos seus (muitos) dias.

O 9 de Maio, data da Europa, é, por esta Capital Europeia da Cultura, interpretado numa aposta singular, no que há-de ser e no que fica: nas crianças, no improvável e nas relações duradouras. “Europa Naquele Lugar” acontece numa escola das Taipas, onde juntamos crianças e atores numa residência artística que incorpora o quotidiano dos alunos enquanto jovens cidadãos europeus como fonte de uma nova criação teatral que estreará em Setembro próximo e que invoca o nome do continente que nos une, estreia esta que habitará uma antiga fábrica têxtil que 2012 viu nascer como lugar criativo: a Fábrica ASA.

Europa que, em Maio, tem muitos outros dias em Guimarães 2012. Tem todos os outros dias, estando presente em mais de uma centena de eventos que nos farão pensar e sentir que Europa de cultura construímos, dia após dia.

Aqui desvendamos todos os dias de Maio em que sucede Europa na Capital Europeia da Cultura que tem nome de Guimarães. Porque a Europa, tal como um país, não se celebra num só dia. Celebra--se em cada um dos nossos dias, interpretando os muitos rostos que, em todos nós, dizem Europa.

CICLO DE CINEMA ERMANNO OLMI

Foi com “A Árvore dos Taman-cos”, com que arrecadou a Palma de Ouro no Festival de Cannes de 1978, que o seu nome foi projetado internacionalmente, mas grande parte da sua obra foi desenvolvida durante os anos 50 num registo dramático em que as componentes documentais se combinavam, muitas vezes, com ficções interpretadas por atores não profissionais. Embora estas fossem características do cinema neo-realista italiano, o realiza-dor rejeitava a ligação com este género cinematográfico.

Em 1988, venceu o Leão de Ouro no Festival de Cinema de Veneza com “La leggenda Del santo bevi-tore”, obra baseada no romance de Joseph Roth.

Os seus filmes, tal como a maio-ria dos considerados produto do movimento neo-realista, são fil-mados em takes longos e lentos, contendo muitas vezes fortes comentários sociais.

With “L’Albero degli zoccoli” (The Tree of Wooden Clogs), which earned him the Palme D’Or at the 1978 Cannes Festival, his name was internationally projected. Though a great part of his work was developed during the 50’s in a dramatic registry in which the documen-tary components would, sometimes, combine with fictions interpreted by non-professional actors.

In 1988 won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival with “La leg-genda Del santo bevitore” (The legend of the Holy Drinker), based on the novel by Joseph Roth.

As most of the movies from the neoreal-ist movement, his work was shot with long and slow takes, containing, some-times, strong social commentaries.

Following the challenge proposed by Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture, Saco Azul, Cultural Association, will develop between May and October, a multidisciplinary project.

DE 1 A 29 MAI

O On.Off tem como objetivo a criação de uma plata-forma de produção e difusão cultural organizada em três níveis de alcance: âmbito local (Portugal), âmbito regional (Galiza) e âmbito internacional (Brasil). Este projeto terá, simultaneamente, um caráter de extensão espácio–temporal (criando relações valiosíssimas de colaboração com os habi-tantes, agentes e estruturas de produção da própria cidade) e um caráter de criação em intensidade.

On.Off aims to create a platform of cultural production and dissemination organized in three scope levels: local (Portugal), regional (Galicia) and internationally (Brazil). This project will have both a character of space-time extension (creating invaluable collaborative relationships with the locals, agents and production structures of the city itself) and a character of creating intensity.

“Da imagem ao cliché, do cliché à imagem” apresenta ao leitor um fecundo diálogo entre filosofia e cinema, partin-do do questionamento de uma crença que já se tornou lugar-comum na atua-lidade: a que condena a “civilização da imagem” e a “sociedade do espetáculo” em que supostamente a imagem teria substituído a palavra.

“From the image to the cliché, from the cliché to the image” introduces the reader to a fruitful dialogue between philosophy and film, starting from the questioning of a belief that has already become a common-place today: to what that condemns the “images’ culture” and “spectacle society” in which the image supposedly would have substituted the word.

Through a musical score for violin, bass clarinet and live electronics games between the sound, the voice and the movement are born, operating transfor-mations. During the transformations, the choreographic movement and the word assume an universal language, offering an experiment of unexplicable but ‘felt’ sensations.

ARCHITECTURE

Reunindo uma série de autores de diversas áreas – arquitetos, antropólogos, filósofos, arque-ólogos e artistas, entre outros – que reposicionam criticamen-te a ideia de objeto, o projeto participa de uma discussão que contemporaneamente questiona a centralidade do humano no ordenamento do mundo e pro-cura determinar de que forma o pensamento do objeto pode ir além dos limites da interpreta-ção discursiva dominante.

O projeto procura problematizar criticamente os processos pelos quais certos objetos se tornam participantes ativos e reconheci-dos da vida da cidade articula-se em dois momentos: um seminá-rio aberto intitulado Política dos Objetos – a ter lugar durante um período de dois dias – que focará os processos de constituição do objeto enquanto entidade legal; a edição de um volume de ensaio, Objetos Selvagens, que se debru-çará sobre o discurso dos objetos e que contará com contribui-ções de produção portuguesa e internacional de destaque neste campo, procurando assim promover a internacionalização da produção crítica e artística portuguesa contemporânea.

Bringing together a number of authors from various fields – archi-tects, anthropologists, philosophers, archaeologists and artists, among others – who critically reposition the idea of object, the project participates in a discussion that simultaneously questions the centrality of the human in the planning of the world and aims to question in which way the thought of the object can go beyond the domi-nant discursive interpretation.

The project that aims to discuss critically the processes by which certain objects become active and recognized participants of the city life is divided in two phases: an open seminar entitled Policy of the Objects – taking place over a period of two days – which will focus on the processes of constitution of the object as a legal entity; editing a test volume, Wild Objects, which will look at the discourse of objects and which will feature proeminent contributions of portuguese and international produc-tion in this field, thus promoting the internationalization of production and critical portuguese contemporary art.

Mas, em pouco tempo, um grande grupo de clandestinos procura refúgio na igreja e aí instala uma pe-quena aldeia. O sacerdote vê a sua igreja ganhar de novo vida mas, de fora, os homens da Lei tornam-se ameaçadores.

A church. A parish priest. A moving com-pany. The church is no longer used, being emptied of all sacred decorations. But soon, a large group of illegal immigrants seeks refuge in the church and installs a small village. The priest sees his church to gain new life, but outside, the men of the law become threatening.

Monica, graphics’ manager in the area of human resources, decides to put into ques-tion the precarious balance between work and affections. Maintaining a relationship with increasing distance with Vittorio, the president of the company she works for, and a conflicting relationship with her father and her half-sister Simona, Monica will have to make amends with her past.

Exposição internacional, a Frame Art pretende ser um ponto de encontro e uma referência no seio dos criadores da vídeo arte, do vídeo e do cinema experimentais, contando ainda com outros géneros como a música e a performance digital.

A mostra exibirá obras dos séculos XX e XXI, resultado de uma seleção das três maiores co-leções do país (Colecção Berardo, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e Fundação Serralves), e terá a participação de Jakub Nepras, artista em residência.

International exhibit, Frame Art is intended as a meeting point and a reference within the creators of video art, video and experimental film, still counting with other genres such as music and digital performance.

The exhibition displays works of the XX and XXI centuries, the result of a selection of the three largest collec-tions in the country (Berardo Collec-tion, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Serralves), and will be attended by Jakub Nepras, artist in residence.

O texto dos Lusíadas é uma grande estória da vida, uma grande estória da condição de ser humano, uma metáfora enorme da nossa condição histórica, em qualquer tempo e lugar.

The Lusíadas is a great story of life, of the human condition, a metaphor of our great historical condition, at any time and place.


Tudo está lá como nas grandes obras de música, nas grandes sinfonias: sub-repticiamente, insinuado nos ritmos, nos jogos de palavras, nos fôlegos de pensa-mento, no humor, no contraste dos andamentos... E a precisão, agudeza e, tantas vezes crue-za, com que Camões formula a “viagem” fazem parte da nossa memória coletiva, e a obrigato-riedade da sua leitura provoca em cada um de nós fascínio e ódio, em que ninguém pode dizer verda-deiramente que não conhece os Lusíadas, mas que quase ninguém conhece verdadeiramente.

Antecipando a apresentação integral da obra, a 9 de junho, no âmbito dos Festivais Gil Vicente, António Fonseca estará entre nós desenvolvendo um conjun-to de ações com a população, nomeadamente a preparação, com famílias vimaranenses, da apresentação de dia 9, mas tam-bém a apresentação, em espaços disseminados pelo concelho, da sua própria e muito especial antologia desta obra maior da literatura portuguesa.

Everything is there as in the great works of music, the great sympho-nies: surreptitiously crept into the rhythms, the wordplay, the breaths of thought, the mood, the contrast of tempos... And the accuracy, sharp-ness, and often crudely with which Camões makes the “journey” part of our collective memory, and its mandatory reading causes in each of us fascination and hate, due to which no one can truly say that doesn’t know the Lusíadas, but that almost no one really knows it.

Intervention of immaterial nature, consisting of a script of Guimarães’ religious heritage and a guide to every church in town. Organized by Cooperativa de Desenvolvimento e Promoção do Turismo Cultural e Re-ligioso (TUREL), this initiative seeks to survey the most important heritage assets of the churches and to qualify the holders of touristic information to visit and dissemination.

Guitarrista de If Lucy Fell, Asneira e I Had Plans, Rui Carvalho editou, no verão do ano passado, o seu primeiro disco a solo com a assinatura Filho da Mãe. “Palácio” é composto por 11 temas onde a guitarra acústica ganha grande protagonismo.

“Palácio” is the title of Rui Carvalho’s debut solo album, a.k.a. Filho da Mãe, that CCVF’s Café Concerto presents in may. Guitar player for If Lucy Fell, Asneira and I Had Plans, Rui Carvalho edited, last summer, his first solo álbum with Filho da Mãe’s signature. “Palácio” is composed by 11 themes where the acoustic guitar is protagonist.

GUIMANIMA/ CICLO DE CINEMA DE ANIMAÇÃO

A agenda do cinema de animação em Guimarães 2012 – num festival pioneiro que dá pelo nome de Guimanima – surge através de uma proposta desenhada pela jovem associação cultural Extra-polar. Trata-se de um programa que acolhe a preocupação com a diversidade dos temas e das origens autorais e a conjuga com a promoção do contacto directo entre públicos, programadores, realizadores e produtores.

A capital Europeia da cultura persegue desta forma a intenção de, criando novas oportunida-des de programação artística e cultural, em articulação com organizações que operam na re-gião, não só enriquecer a oferta cultural em áreas consideradas estratégicas – e o cinema é uma delas – como convocar práticas e serviços que reforcem as compe-tências disponíveis no território.

Esta conjugação de objectivos, bem presente no Guimanima, é a linha condutora de Guimarães 2012 Capital Europeia da Cultura,

The program of Animation Film at Guimarães 2012 – in a pioneer festival entitled Guimanima – was born out of a proposition designed by the young Cultural Association Extrapolar. It consists in a program that conciliated the need for a diversity of themes and its authorship origins conjugated with the promotion of direct contact with the audience, programmers, directors and producers.

The European Capital of Culture follows its intention, creating new opportunities for cultural and artistic initiatives, in close connection with organizations operating in the region, of not only enrich the cultural services in strategic areas - and film is one of them – but also invoking practices and services that reinforce the avail-able capacities of the territory.

This coming together of objectives, present in Guimanima, is the line of orientation of Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture, where we share the objective of showing and discussing, contacting and confront-ing, attending and participating.

São reconhecidos no seu país pelo seu trabalho experimental, apreciado e galardoado pelo mundo inteiro. Paul e Menno de Nooijer, da Holanda, têm corrido mundo com os seus diferentes trabalhos e com as performances que levam a cabo. Três diferentes sessões: duas com exibição de obras e outra com uma performance executada. O pano de fundo são obras cinematográficas executadas por pai e filho que sempre trabalharam em conjunto.

Recognized in their country due to their experimental work, appreciated and re-warded all over the world. Paul and Menno de Nooijer, from the Netherlands, runned the world with their different works and performances that develop. Three different sessions, two with works’ exhibitions and other with a performance with the backdrop of cinematographic works executed by father and son that always worked together.

In world tour, YACHT visits Guimarães to present “Shangri-La”, their latest work. The YACHT project, an acronym for Young Americans Challenging High Technology, was born in 2002 in Portland, Oregon, as Jona Bechtolt’s solo multidisciplinary experience, a musician and multimedia artist who embraces an eclectic and exciting mix of electronic, acoustic and percussion sounds off all kinds.

Based in the homonymous play of Dias Gomes, this tells the story of Zé, a poor peasant, and the promisse that he makes to Santa Bárbara when his only property, his donkey, gets sick. His prayers are answered, but paying the promisse turns out to be a more complicated task than it was expected.

Neste Canil, um grupo de homens junta-se para minar o sistema.

Perhaps it is more utopic to build a balanced society between strong and weak, employers and employees, rulers and ruled. Perhaps revolutions are past events, as if the present was to live in a cynicism so great that nothing is true enough in order to know what we are fighting against.

In this kennel, a group of men get together to undermine the system.

Ideias Urbanas é um projeto desenvolvido pelo OPO Lab que se inicia com a abertura em Guima-rães do espaço FInD Lab (Fabrica-tion Innovation & Development), um laboratório de Fabricação Digital munido dos mais recentes meios de concepção e fabrico assistido por computador que proporcionará cruzamentos multidisciplinares entre cultura e tecnologia. Fundamentado em premissas de inovação, formação e investigação, o seu programa educativo irá ser desenvolvido com um conjunto de Workshops, visitas e Open Days, ambicionan-do ser um espaço de dialogo entre os diferentes atores da região potenciando sinergias entre a universidade, escolas, criativos, industria e população.

Este será o espaço que irá receber entre estas actividades as Residên-cias FInD Lab – local de trabalho para profissionais e estudantes de diferentes áreas criativas que am-bicionam investigar e materializar propostas na área da fabricação digital explorando assim novas formas e processos de concepção.

Ideias Urbanas is a project developed by the OPO Lab that begins with the opening of FIND Lab space (Fabrica-tion Innovation & Development), a Digital Fabrication laboratory equipped with the latest conception and fabrication computer-aided means that will allow multidiscipli-nary intersections between culture and technology. Based on assump-tions of innovation, training and research, its educational program will be developed with a set of workshops, visits and Open Days, aiming to be a space for dialogue between different region actors leveraging synergies be-tween universities, schools, creative, industry and population.

This place will receive among these activities, the FIND Lab Residences - workplace for professionals and students from different creative areas that aim to investigate and realize proposals in the area of digital manu-facturing exploring, this way, new conception forms and processes.

SONORES SOUND | SPACE | SIGNALO Sonores propõe um programa multi-disciplinar tendo como tópico concetual o questionamento crítico e artístico da noção de “som”, incluindo tempos de reflexão e de diálogo, de crítica e de aná-lises, de aprendizagem e de colabora-ções, de intervenções no espaço público, juntamente com uma programação de performances artísticas e musicais.

O epicentro do evento será uma estação de rádio que, além de um espaço de emissão, se apresentará como um espaço de mediação com o público, espaço pedagógico e de realização de workshops e ateliês informais de produção, palco pontual para performances.

Sonores proposes a multidisciplinary pro-gram having as conceptual topic the criti-cal and artistic questioning of the notion of “sound”, including time for reflection and dialogue, critic and analysis, learning and collaboration, interventions in the public space, along with a program of artistic and musical performances.

The epicenter of the event will be a radio station that more than being a broadcast space, will be a mediation space with the public, educational, workshops and pro-duction ateliers’ space and ponctual stage for performances.

O CASTELO EM 3 ATOS

Projeto multifacetado comissariado por Paulo Cunha e Silva, que utiliza a ideia de Castelo como poderosa metáfora que agarra as grandes questões contemporâneas. Perti-nentemente, o Castelo é também o símbolo mais forte de Guimarães. Por isso, permite, simultaneamente, não escamotear uma realidade da cidade e serve de pretexto para introduzir os temas que agitam o nosso tempo.

A multifaceted project curated by Paulo Cunha e Silva, who uses the idea of the Castle as a powerful metaphor that grabs major contemporary issues. Pertinently, the castle is also the most potent symbol of Guimarães. So it allows both to reveal a reality of the city and to serve as a pretext for introducing the themes that stir our time.

The Castle is thus past and future, utopia and root, origin and destiny, fortress and palace, unity and di-versity. In the national imagination, the Castle of Guimarães corresponds to the myth of origin, at least the origin of nationality. Questioning all these fluctuations at a time when Guimarães is the European Capital of Culture and when the fate of Europe is more open and undefined than ever, is not only desirable but indispensable. The project will use various visual and semantic devices, to explore the problem we have set out, specially commissioned for this purpose: Visual Arts, Cinema, Literature, Architec-ture, Design, Cuisine and of course Thought in two large international conferences on “The Future of Europe” and “The Future of the World in a Eu-rope Without a (foreseable) Future”. As the title suggests The Castle in 3 Acts will take place in three different moments (April to November 2012).

Over the centuries, the Angels inhabited imaginary spaces and decorated spaces, whether through a profoundly catholic world, whether in reminiscences of the classical mythol-ogy, whether decontextualized by the desecration of Lights. Not forgetting their theological, humanist and mystic perspectives, we present the four major phases of their representation: the Punisher Angel medieval period, the Angel of the Humanist Renais-sance, the Baroque Angel of Luxury and Decoration, the Protector Angel of the Contemporary Age.

Mais do que contextualizar as obras expostas, as Visitas Orientadas procuram proporcionar experiências que aproximem o público das formas artísticas, com o objetivo de suscitar múltiplas in-terpretações e diálogos. Desenvol-vem-se ações de natureza diversa, numa perspetiva de construção comum, envolvendo a contribuição ativa dos participantes, do público e dos visitantes.

More than contextualize the works exhibited, the Guided Visits seek to provide experiences that will bring the public closer to the art forms, in order to elicit multiple interpretations and dialogues. Actions of various kinds are developed, in a perspective of common construction, involving the active contribution of partici-pants, the public and visitors.

Esta é uma proposta de reflexão sobre o território do concelho de Guimarães a partir de uma abordagem que envolve quatro fotógrafos estrangeiros, pressu-pondo que ainda existe no distanciamen-to geográfico razões culturais e sensibi-lidades específicas capazes de produzir outras leituras e contradizer o sentido homogeneizador da globalização.

This a reflection proposal on the territory of the county of Guimarães from an ap-proach that involves four foreign photogra-phers, assuming that there are still, in the geographical distance, cultural reasons and specific sensitivities able to produce other readings and contradict the homogenizing effect of globalization.

Com curadoria de Gabriela Vaz--Pinheiro, Obra de Papel é um projeto de natureza inclusiva, que reúne artistas de renome e artistas em início de carreira. É constituído por uma obra no formato habitualmente associado ao jornal gratuito a ser distribuído e expedido ao longo dos anos de 2011 e 2012, num total de 24 números.

PaperWork is an inclusive intervention, curated by Gabriela Vaz-Pinheiro, that brings together renowned artistas and artists at the beginning of their careers. It produces a work of art in the format usually associated with the free newspaper, that will be distributed and posted throughout 2011 and 2012, in the total of 24 monthly issues.

ARQUIVOS As oficinas ARQUIVOS exploram a ideia de guardar qualquer coisa, de a organizar e preservar, de selecionar e valorizar. Arquivo de gestos, de objetos, de coisas impossíveis, de tudo o que consegui-mos ver e ouvir. As experiências serão variadas, consoante a área de trabalho, desde a dança, o vídeo, a fotografia, o teatro, a escrita, a linguagem, o pensa-mento, a pintura, a escultura, a filosofia, a matemática, a química, o desporto, a culinária, a biologia, entre outras.

ARCHIVES workshops explore the idea of storying something, of organizing it, select-ing it and valorizing it. Archive of gestures, objects, of impossible things, of whatever we can see and hear. The experiences will vary, depending on the field, from dance, video, photography, theater, writing, language, thinking, painting, sculpture, philosophy, mathematics, chemistry, sports, cooking, biology, among others.

OFICINAS DA IMAGEMOficinas da Imagem é um projeto que lançou às escolas do concelho de Gui-marães o desafio de explorar o OLHAR, O LUGAR e o CORPO, atravessando o primeiro ciclo de exposições patentes no âmbito da programação da Capital Europeia da Cultura, que constituem maioritariamente uma reflexão sobre o lugar, a paisagem, a cidade, o território.

As escolas EB2,3 das Caldas das Taipas, EB2,3 Fernando Távora (Fermentões), Esco-la Secundária Francisco de Holanda e EB2,3 de Pevidém participam no projeto, cada uma com uma turma orientada, respeti-vamente, pelos criadores Catarina Claro, Pedro Bastos, João Girão e Luís Ribeiro.

Image workshops is a project that launched to the schools of the county the challenge of exploring the LOOK, the PLACE and the BODY, crossing the first cycle of exhibitions patents in the programming of the Euro-pean Capital of Culture, which are mostly a reflection on the place, the landscape and the city territory.

Os serões decorrem sempre em casas rústicas, onde o público é acolhido num ambiente familiar.

Developed around the oral tradition, the project Stories of the Beginning of the World, is held in various parishes of the county, under the guidance of Antonio Fontinha that is accompanied by different storytellers. The evenings are always car-ried out in rustic houses, where the public is welcomed in a familiar environment.

“DANÇAR É CRESCER” DE PAULA VARANDA ARTES E COMUNIDADES — ENCONTROS/ PROGRAMAÇÃO CCVF

Em 2011, realizou-se pela primeira vez Artes e Comunidades – Encontros, semi-nário destinado à reflexão sobre as prá-ticas artísticas com e para a comunidade. O caderno resultante destes Encontros será publicamente apresentado em conjunto com o livro “Dançar é Crescer”, de Paula Varanda. A apresentação dos dois volumes será pretexto para uma conversa com intervenientes em ambos os projetos, na perspetiva da relevância do trabalho de documentação para a consolidação das pontes entre práticas artísticas e pedagógicas.

In 2011, Arts and Communities – Meetings, seminar to reflect on the art practices with and to the community first took place. The notebook that resulted from these Meetings will be publicly presented together with the book “Dançar é Crescer”. The presentation of the two volumes will be the pretext for a chat with actors on both projects, in the perspec-tive of the relevance of the documentation work for the consolidation of the bridges between artistic and pedagogical practices.
