The realisation that a countrys international
significance is largely determined by its role in world
trade was one which underlay the foundation of the
Nederlandse Handels-Hoogeschool (Netherlands
School of Commerce), a forerunner of the Erasmus
School of Economics (ESE). For a small country like
the Netherlands, which then had limited politicalpower, it was doubly essential to provide the best
possible educational facilities for the future leaders
in transport, trade and commerce. By that time
Rotterdam already had a worldwide reputation as a
trading port, and thus represented an ideal location
for such a school. Due to its geographical position
at the Maas estuary, Rotterdam is often called the
gateway to Europe. The high level of activity in many
branches of commerce promised to provide a lively
cooperation between the city and the educationalinstitution.
Today, more than ninety years later, ESE has grown to
become a leading academic institution in the world.
The present-day culture of the Erasmus School of
Economics still reflects the business-like and decisive
mentality of its founding fathers.
With its problem-oriented teaching and market-
oriented research, the school is able to adjust rapidly
to changes in the business environment. The school
hosts many of the worlds experts in their fields of
research and offers top level Bachelors, Masters and
post-experience Masters programmes in all major
areas of economics and business.
The Erasmus School of Economics is home to many
different specialisations and independent institutions. This brochure should provide the reader with a
general impression of what The Erasmus School
of Economics has to offer. But I hope that our
acquaintance will not just stop here, and I would like
to invite interested students to contact us for further
information, for instance by visiting our website
at www.ese.eur.nl/master.

Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) was founded in
1913 by leading business executives and bankers.
The university has a solid reputation throughout the
world and combines academic excellence with an
empirical focus and an emphasis on applied business
and policy. In addition to the economics of European
and world markets, business administration, financeand banking, econometrics, transport and logistics,
we also investigate health care, the environment,
philosophy, law and legislation, history, arts and
culture.
Erasmus University Rotterdam is a modern institution
and an important educational centre located near
one of the worlds largest ports. International
and Dutch students who wish to increase their
educational level and competitiveness on the labourmarket will find the key disciplines at Erasmus
University Rotterdam very appealing. At present,
Erasmus University Rotterdam boasts some 23,000
students in seven faculties and schools. Some
3,800 of these students are international and these
numbers are growing each academic year.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Erasmus University Rotterdam is world-renowned
for academic excellence. It comprises internationallyacclaimed institutes, such as the Erasmus School
of Economics, Erasmus MC University Medical
Centre, which is highly esteemed in the area of
research, and RSM Erasmus University, which ranks
among the top five business schools in Europe. This
reputation also holds true for the field of Economics
and Business, as the Erasmus School of Economics
was recently honoured with an exceptional mention
by the Centrum fr Hochschulentwicklung (CHE),
a German authority in matters of higher education.
The CHEs annual Excellence Ranking 2009 places
the ESE in its Excellence-group. Quality of academic
contributions and international presence areimportant criteria for the CHE.
CAMPUS
Over the past 25 years, many new buildings have
been built on the main site of Erasmus University
Rotterdam: the Woudestein campus. The rapid
growth of the student body during the 1980s and
the addition of educational disciplines led to the
expansion and renovation of existing buildings.
Nowadays, more intensive educational methods, modern techniques of knowledge transfer and the
latest computer facilities for students bring about
constant change in our facilities.
The Woudestein campus is located in the Kralingen
district, near the Van Brienenoord Bridge in the east
of Rotterdam and houses the Erasmus School of
Economics and other disciplines.
The auditorium, the various departments of theUniversity Office, the University Library, catering
facilities, the sports complex and the Erasmus
Expo and Congress Centre are all located on the
Woudestein campus.

Nobel Prize laureateJan Tinbergen (1903-1994)
Professor Tinbergen was the first to receive the
Nobel Prize in economics in 1969. He was one
of the founding fathers of econometrics and
the first to construct complete macro-economic
models. Although the first model he developed
for the Netherlands was rather simple, it was
already usable as a base for economic policy.Working for the League of Nations, he soon
produced more extensive models for the United
States and the United Kingdom. As the first di-
rector of the Centraal Planbureau (a think tank
on economic problems for the Dutch govern-
ment) he became one of the architects of Dutch
post-war economic policy, his second major
field. Leaving the bureau in 1955, he dedicated
his energies entirely to the economic problems
of less developed countries, passionately advi-sing their governments. His numerous writings
owe their widespread appeal to their immediate
relevance to practical problems and their clear
presentation. He continued to work and publish
until his death. When he died, at the age of 91,
he was a revered and widely honoured scholar
and public figure. His memory lives on in the
Tinbergen Institute, the graduate school and
research institute of the Erasmus School of
Economics (a joint venture with the Universi-teit van Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit
Amsterdam).

In 1973, the Erasmus School of Economics merged
with the Faculty of Medicine to form Erasmus
University Rotterdam. The Erasmus School of
Economics offers Bachelors, Masters and PhD
programmes in four different fields:
pAccounting, Auditing and Control,
pEconomics and Business,pEconometrics and Management Science,
pEconomics and Taxation
(offered only in Dutch: Fiscale Economie).
We are convinced that students should establish a
solid theoretical background before specialising in a
particular area.
As a school, we are keenly aware of the
importance of having a global perspective. Boththe Erasmus School of Economics and Erasmus
University Rotterdam work dilligently to encourage
international co-operation. By initiating international
research projects, sending students and researchers
abroad and providing appropriate facilities for our
international guests, we strive to broaden our global
reach. In addition to a growing number of MSc
programmes taught in English, the Erasmus School
of Economics also offers two BSc programmes
entirely in English: the International Bachelor inEconomics and Business Economics programme
and the International Bachelor in Econometrics and
Operations Research programme.
Located in the heart of Rotterdam, Erasmus School
of Economics nurtures its long-standing ties to the
business community. Students of the Erasmus School
of Economics benefit from these ties both during
their studies and after. During their studies, students
can expect guest lectures from members of thebusiness community and government. Graduates of

How do you control an organisation? How
do you measure the performance of the
management of a company? Which incentive
schemes motivate managers most to achieve
corporate objectives? The discipline of Management
Accounting and Control deals with these kinds
of questions. An accounting information systemproduces information which managers use for
controlling various business activities and for making
strategic decisions. This information is also used by
employees to complete operational tasks. In addition
to internal use, the processed information (e.g.
financial statements) is also used by external users
who have an interest in the firm, such as investors,
suppliers and regulators. Financial Accounting deals
with for example the quality and decision usefulness
of information included in financial statements.
However, is this information reliable, understandable,
comparable and relevant?
Corporate scandals involving very large companies
turned auditing into headline news, not just in the
business pages of newspapers, but on front pages, ineditorials, in television news bulletins and discussion
programmes as well. In the United States and Great
Britain, but also in the Netherlands, organisations
responsible for supervising the operation of the
financial market criticise the work of independent
auditors. This resulted in big question marks being
placed over the competence and independence of
auditors. Auditing is more than ever the talk of the
town!

The Masters specialisation in Behavioural Economics
is intended for students who want to have a solid
training in mainstream economics and, at the same
time, learn how recent insights from psychology
enrich traditional economics.
MISSION
Behavioural Economics is a new and increasingly
popular stream of economics based on the
psychology of human behaviour. It shows how
insights from psychology help to improve economic
decision making. A solid training in mainstream
economics provides students with the tools used
in economics and finance to analyze human
behaviour and to design policies and strategies. An
additional training in Behavioural Economics willenable students to understand why people do not
always behave as rational economic decision makers
and how economic policies and strategies can be
improved to take such deviations from rational
behaviour into account.
CURRICULUM
The Masters specialisation consists of both
mainstream economics and Behavioural Economics.
For the mainstream economics courses studentscan choose between 3 tracks: a Finance track, an
Economics of Management and Organisation track,
and a Marketing track. These tracks consist of

CAREER PROSPECTS
Students with a Masters degree in Behavioural
Economics have many job opportunities in all sectors
of the economy. To give a few examples:
Governments increasingly use the insights from
Behavioural Economics to shape policies. Examples
are pension design and health policy. Economists
with a training in Behavioural Economics will know
how to effectively design and improve economic
policies and strategies. In private enterprises Behavioural Economists can
help design better marketing policies, contracts, and
financial portfolios. Behavioural economists know the
biases that affect peoples choices and, hence, their
insights can help to improve products and contracts.
Behavioural economists also learn which
psychological motives play a role in negotiations.
They can therefore improve negotiation procedures
to the benefit of the company they work for.
