Independence Day ExtravaganzaSaturday, June 29th was a fantastic and

beautiful day. Sandwiched in betweenrain storms AmSoc and the AmericanConsulate hosted a traditional FamilyPicnic to celebrate our 237th AmericanIndependence Day.

The event was amazing as was the

support that our team received fromCorporate Sponsors and our members.Pictures are worth a thousand words soenjoy looking at our many pictures andif you cannot get enough just go to ourwebsite at www.AmSoc.com.br whereyoull nd lots more.

Children and adults all seemed excitedto be picnicking on the only sunny dayin the last week. Eating hamburgers, hotdogs, salads and yummy desserts donated

by attendees.

The festivities were launched bythe Marine Color Guard and openingcomments from AmSoc President FrankPierce and our Consul General, DennisHankins with a general message ofgratitude and thankfulness to all who

sacriced for our Freedom and came heretoday to share our American tradition.

The American Society was proud topresent two Charities with large donationchecks to help support their ongoingactivities with children and educationalopportunities. Present was Sr. Angela

from Projeto Sol and Peter and JaneHawkins from SPACE. As you can seefrom the pictures, they were very excitedto receive the donations made possiblefrom our Members efforts at fund raisingevents throughout the year. Next year wehope to be able to give even more; as anorganization we are committed to helpcharitable causes and maintaining ourAmerican traditions abroad.

Of course, the grand nal once againthis year were the reworks. They were

10 minutes of pure pleasure for everyoneand we received many comments that thereworks made it feel like we were in theUS.

Prepare for the Angel Party onNovember 9th

The American Societys Angel Partyis coming up on us, on November 9 atChapel School. There are so many waysto help and in this article youll hear

from people who do so regularly. We hopeto give you an idea of why most peoplekeep coming back year after year, and wehope to inspire you to join our team!

As background, the Angel Party isa Christmas party held each yera forabout 240 children in day care centers,orphanages and educational programs, allfunded in part by the American Societyand people like you. The party is held atChapel School and (continued on page 5)

Memoriesof childhood.I write thiswhile onv a c a t i o nwith myfamily inOcean City,M a r y l a n d .Two ofour three

c h i l d r e n ,their children,my brothers

and their children, and Mom. 16people in one duplex house stepsfrom the beach. With family inBaltimore we drove 700 miles fromMichigan to Ocean City almostevery year of my childhood. Thiscity has stood still in time. Thethousands of houses, hotels andhigh-rise condominiums and the

three-mile boardwalk have all beenupdated following hurricanes, butthe same 3-for-$10 t-shirt stores,Candy Kitchen stores, boardwalk

pizza restaurants, DumsersDairyland, sand sculptures and theJolly Roger amusement park arestill here.

Its amazing how the millionsof same visitors keep coming

back every year. Ocean City is anannual destination for Marylanders,Virginians, Pennsylvanians and the

few of us with family ties to thearea. Thats tradition.

Its tradition because we knowit will always be there, our favoritestores, restaurants and attractionswill be there, the sun will bethere and its safe. The only thingmissing from the point of view ofan expatriate living in Brazil arethe kiosks on the beach servingcaipirinhas and the vendors sellingcheese, shrimp, ice cream, acai,

fashion sunglasses from Paraguay,and beachwear.July is a month of vacations in

Brazil as well. Campos do Jordao,the northeast and even the beaches

of the So Paulo Rio litoral. Ilove to tell our family and friendsin the USA about how bad ourwinters in Brazil are not! Mostimportantly, July is also the timefor annual membership renewals.We all must keep in mind that ourmembership fees are extremelylow for the activities and benetsAmSoc provides. Revenue frommemberships is needed to offset

administration costs, and mostimportantly, to continue to supportthe local charities. We need yourhelp!

As we pass through July though,many Americans begin to lter

back to Brazil for the new schoolterm. Spring time in So Paulois not far away and were already

planning many activities.Little League sign-up in August,

followed by the annual Vida Jovem

celebration supporting the wonderfulactivities and benets they provideto children. In September well

be honoring our Corporate andindividual sponsors with a VIPCocktail reception and October

brings the annual AmSoc AdultSoftball challenge, the 8th annualMunro Cup Golf Tournament, theChildrens Halloween party and ofcourse, happy hour at PJ Clarkes.

November brings us one of oursignature events, the Christmas

Angel Party where we host over240 children from the variousorphanages and CommunityCenters we support and celebratethe Christmas spirit with activitiesand gifts.

The Thanksgiving celebration atFellowship Church and the LittleLeague BBQ will close out themonth. Then on December 6th, wehave the annual Christmas Party an event not to be missed.

Welcome back and I am lookingforward to seeing everyone at theevents!

Origin, time here:We lived just outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada until lastJanuary when we moved to So Paulo.

Why So Paulo: We came here because o Brians work

Best things so far:The botecos and restaurants have been a pleasant surprise.There are so many places where you can eat outside or inopen courtyards. Restaurants are also very kid-riendlyand will prepare dishes or our children which are not onthe menu.

Early frustrations:Getting used to the trac particularly motorcycles wasdicult. It takes a long time to get to dierent parts othe city and nding hardware, housewares and some othe basics required when you set up a home ater movingis a challenge.The paperwork required or schools, visas, buying a car,setting up a bank account etc. seemed unending andneedlessly complicated. Even though we had help rom arelocation company, it was not easy.

Have saudade for anything back home:

Green space. I know there are great parks here, but we livea bit too ar rom them and they are so crowded on week-ends and holidays. I also miss a really good grocery store.

Progress with Portuguese:Awul. The kids are in an English school and have beentaking classes in Portuguese as a second language andmy husband and I took lessons in the rst ew months wearrived, but Im ashamed to say that we gave up.The riends we made speak English and we speak Englishexclusively in our home. We read and watch TV andmovies in English. I you want to learn Portuguese, I think

you have to practice it and listen to it much more thanwe do.

Favorite place to hang out:Boteco So Bento in Vila Madalena.

If you nd yourself in need ofemergency assistance, the AmericanCitizen Services Unit of the U.S.Consulate General in Sao Paulo standsready to provide it. Most people

come to us for routine matters such aspassport services or notarizations, butwe also assist U.S. citizens with a widerange of emergency services.

For example, what if your passportor all your money is lost or stolen?We can assist you in replacing your

passport and getting you back home.With your permission, we can call yourfamily and friends to explain how theycan send money to you. If no one isable to assist you and you have no other

resources, in extreme circumstanceswe can loan you funds to buy a one-way ticket to the United States. We canreplace your passport with a limitedvalidity emergency passport, followingthe procedures detailed on our website

at http://brazil.usembassy.gov/service.html.

If you become ill, we can help yound qualied physicians who speakEnglish. In dire emergencies, we can

provide information on how to arrangea medical evacuation to the UnitedStates.

If you or someone you know isarrested in Brazil, please contactus immediately. Consular ofcers

visit U.S. citizens imprisoned inBrazil to provide information aboutthe Brazilian legal system, providecontact information for local attorneys,ensure fair treatment, and facilitatecommunication with family or friendsin the United States.

In the event of the death of a U.S.citizen, if no family members arenearby, we will contact the next of kin inthe United States. We can also assist inmaking burial arrangements or provide

Prepare for the Angel Party on November 9ththe kids have a

great day of food, games and fun. Atthe end of the party, Santa Claus comesand gives each child a special gift bagswith presents for just that child.

Right now were in need of peopleto help Santa by shopping for all theitems in one childs bag. You need to

buy tennis shoes, a backpack, a toy,pants and a shirt, socks, underwear, acoat or sweatshirtand some candy.You can also

donate R$400and well do theshopping for you.Sara Shahidi has

been a sponsor formany years andshe said, I seethe Angel Partyas a privilege - a

privilege to beable to make achild really happy. I receive the names,

ages and sizes of the children, goshopping and spend an afternoon withmy kids wrapping everything. Then its

just the thrill of seeing someone enjoytheir gifts! If you have never done it,try and you will see for yourself.

A hard-working committee meetsabout once a month to plan the party.Silvana Mooney, who has just moved

back to the U.S. and served as thevolunteer coordinator last year, said,The Angel Party still ranks as one ofmy top days during my time in Brazil.

Coordinating the army of volunteers isa task that takes hours and hours, but itwas well worth it to see everyone turnout and take part in such a special day.Planning for the party, shopping for

prizes and collecting gift bags are alltime-consuming activities, but the pay-off far exceeds the work that goes intogetting everything ready.

On the day of the party, we counton over 200 volunteers. Somevolunteers have special jobs, like Jason

Bermingham, who is part of a team thatmeets a specic group of kids whenthey get off the bus and stays withthem all day, carrying bags and wipingmessy faces. Hes there every year.

The Angel Party is our not-to-missedAmSoc event. We attended for the rsttime close to seven years ago, openingSantas bag of donated gifts with alittle boy named Gabriel. That day wasso emotional and rewarding for bothof us that we returned the followingyear as volunteers - and weve beenvolunteering every year since. Thekids form attachments too. Fernando

Magnoli, anothervolunteer whospent the entire

day with the kidsof one orphanage,said of his second

party, The kidsremembered methe moment theysaw me. Theyasked about mywife who had

been pregnantand they gave us

a gift for our baby. That meant so much

to me.Another long-time volunteer,Eric Street, is in charge of logistics -making sure key volunteers, busesof children and dancing dogs arriveon time. Its a long day on the phoneand racing about Chapel School, butEric comes back every year. We getso tied up in the minutiae of our dailylives that we sometimes forget whatintense happiness is all about. In part, Ivolunteer to help out at the Angel Partyevery year to be reminded. When you

glimpse a 3-year-old wearing a mile-wide smile anddragging off a

bag full of toyswhich is biggerthan he is, youget to share in the

pure joy of themoment.

Patricia deLuna and herhusband, Carlos,

went to the partyfor the rst timein 2012. We hada blast! I took

photos, but Carlos

was particularly lucky and spent theday with a young man with musculardystrophy who was overjoyed at beingable to participate in the games andhave help in opening his gifts. We willdenitely be coming back!

Its a fun day, even when you mightbe doing something else. Gale Bantahas helped organize the games forseveral years and said, Last year theAngel Party was held on my birthday.I could not have asked for a better

birthday wish than to spend the day with

all the special children and wonderfulvolunteers!

One thing we hope is that ourvolunteers will feel a connection to thesechildren and to the greater community inSo Paulo. Simone Kliass, a volunteerfor many years, said, After attendingthe party, I started getting more andmore involved with the orphanagesand I see the difference that AmericanSociety makes in the lives of thosechildren. Jason Bermingham said, If

youre looking to do good in So Paulo- and make a lasting impact on the livesof some extraordinary kids - theresno better place for you than the AngelParty.

Its a ton of work but Angel Partyboss Eileen Tasso said, Bringinghappiness and laughter to children whohave almost nothing is an amazingfeeling. Come join us!

Challenge Cup against the Scotsgenerating an increasing demandfor golng events, AmSoc golferscombined with the American golfersat the Campinas Golf Club to play anannual two-day golf match called theSo Paulo Hackers Cup.

This team golf challenge is played ontwo different golf courses in the state ofSo Paulo on dates to be decided basedon availability between April and Juneevery year.

Each team hosts one of the twomatch dates on a course they chose andwill also determine the specic match

play golng rules for that day.The winner of this golf cup will be the

team with the most accumulated match

points over the two golf outings.On a beautiful and not too sunnyMarch 30th, a group of AmSoc golferswent to the very well-manicuredCampinas Golf Course to play in therst leg of the Sao Paulo Hackers Cup.Playing just 10 against 10 (5 groups of2 against 2) in 4-ball Match Play rules,the Campinas team won 3 to 1 inmatch points.

Then on another gorgeous golngday on Saturday, June 8, AmSoc hostedthe second leg at the exquisite Quinta

da Baroneza Golf Club.Unfortunately neither AmSocs

home course nor a change in matchrules to Twosome Best Ball Scramblehelped turn the tide against a dominantCampinas team which won handily 4 to in match points that day, thereforewinning the 1st So Paulo Hackers Cup

by a score of 8 to 2.Golfers, note that the next AmSoc

team golf outing will be in September,on a date yet to be determined, when

AmSoc golfers will prepare for theirdefense in retaining the Munro Cup inthe upcoming 8th Challenge Golf Cupon Saturday, October 19th at a golfcourse to be determined.

Winter break is coming to an end andAmSoc families are either returning toSo Paulo after time away, or arrivingfor the rst time to this city. Now, thiswould be a great time to get to knowour own marvelous city, from top to

bottom, and discover a little bit about themegalopolis in which we live. Considertaking a self-guided tour around town,getting to know the place a bit better

and bolstering your knowledge ofthings-to-do when friends and familyinvariably visit. Below are a couple offamily-friendly options.

So Paulo Highlights

The sheer size of the cityand theferocity of its trafc jamsmakes SoPaulo sometimes difcult to navigate,and uncovering all of its treasures cantake more time than youve scheduled.

That said, this full-day tour highlights abit of the culture, food, art, architecture,nightlife, and even nature that SoPaulo has to offer.

Start off with the melodic soundsof Portuguesebeautiful, even if youdont understand itat the engagingMuseu da Lngua Portuguesa (Museum ofthe Portuguese Language). One of thefew museums in the world dedicatedto a language, the Museu da LnguaPortuguesa exposes speakers and non-speakers alike to the sinuous, uid

sounds of Brazils distinct mothertongue. Even though the exhibits andinstallations are all in Portuguese,newcomers to the language can pickup its rhythm and ow through videos,recitations and interactive presentationsdesigned to facilitate communicationacross linguistic barriers, highlightingthe multicultural nuances the languagehas acquired over the centuries, as wellas its European origins.

Next, grab a humongous mortadella

(bologna) sandwich for lunch at thebuzzing Mercado Municipal. Housed in astunning example of eclectic industrialarchitecture, the Mercado Municipal deSo Paulo nicknamed the Mercado

has thousands of food items onoffer, literally from soup to nuts. Lushtropical and temperate fruits from everyseason, choice cuts of meats and sh,and hearty prepared foods complete themarkets catalog of wares, all for sale ina boisterous, welcoming atmosphere.The surrounding area can be a bitsketchy, but the sights and avorsmore than make up for the journey

downtown.Another option

is to snack on streetfood and shop forsouvenirs in Japaneseenclave Liberdade. Theneighborhood offers anamazing fusion of sights,sounds, and avors.On weekends, theres afun street market (see

picture below) with

various and sundry foodand curios. You cannd excellent sushi, but make sure toask for recommendations before yougo. Wander around the boisterous sidestreets or into one of the many verticalshopping arcades, and dont forget totry a delicious and refreshing melona

popsicle, ubiquitous among the areasfood stalls. At night, take to the mic inEnglish, Portuguese, or Japanese at oneof Liberdades many karaoke bars.

Next take a taxi down to Parque do

Ibirapuera for a bit of fresh air and art.

The emerald heart of an oftentimes graycity, the park offers respite from theurban madness among cool, shady treesand mentally stimulating structures.Running trails, bike paths, and yoga

and capoeira sessions let park visitorskeep t, while a clutch of museumsand galleries such as the museumsof Modern and Contemporary Art, alldesigned by master Brazilian architectOscar Niemeyer gives the brain agood workout. The impressive MuseuAfro Brasil and ery Auditrio Ibirapueraare two of the parks treasures.

After the park, hop a cab and take

a trip through the citys street art

epicenter, the Beco do Batman (see pictureabove). As evidenced by any car tripthrough the city, street art and graftiare no where as prevalent as in SoPaulo, where virtually no surface is leftuntouched. The lengthy stretch of high-walled residences in Vila Madalena,nicknamed Batmans Alley, showcasessome of the most impressive spray

paint murals around. The constantlychanging nature of the art form means

theres sure to be something strikingand new with each visit.

Later, get geo-political at theNiemeyer-designed Memorial daAmrica Latina as a monument to thesocio-cultural and political unity ofLatin America. Punctuated by a largemodernist statue of a bleeding hand, theMemorial is one of the more underratedattractions in the city. The collection of

pavilions and galleries houses paintings,sculptures and folk art, along with a

rotating schedule of performances andevents, like the annual So Paulo LatinAmerican Cinema Festival. Dont missthe giant, whimsical relief map of LatinAmerica underneath the glass oor.

Wrap up your day with a sunsetcocktail with jaw-dropping views atthe Edifcio Itlia. Situated in a bustling,if worn-down corner of downtownSo Paulo, the 46-story ofce tower is

capped by the Terrao Itlia restaurantand bar. Adequate, expensive food andalmost-campy white-glove serviceaside, youll never see a sunset asmemorable.

And if youve still got any energyleft over, consider people-watchingand maybe a little dancing on RuaAugusta. The hippest strip in town, RuaAugusta especially the gritty buthappening stretch north of AvenidaPaulista, called Baixo Augusta

buzzes with hole-in-the-wall bars,nightclubs thumping from midnighttil noon, cornerluncheonettes,ethnic eateries,funky clothingstores, rockinmusic venuesand more thana few grungystrip clubs thatare holding

on againstthe tide ofgentrication.

Rua Augusta pulses as the main arteryof So Paulos nightlife scene, andyoull nd a carnivalesque atmospherealmost every night of the week.

Weekends are best for this tour, asmuseums tend to be closed on Mondaysand the street life in Liberdade andon Rua Augusta is a bit livelier thanmidweek. Still, there is a lot to see anyday of the week, and you can adjust

your schedule according to attractionopening hours. Because of the distancesinvolved, a private car or taxi cabs areyour best bet for getting to each point ofinterest. Budget at least R$100-R$150for a days worth of taxi rides, andmake sure your driver always plots theshortest route via dashboard GPS.

So Paulo With Kids

Even though So Paulo can be an

intense, rough-n-tumble kind of place,families with young children do visitand live in the city, and there are severalwonderful museums with interactiveexhibits tailored towards young minds,

in addition to the surprising number ofgreen spaces in town. This tour coversa few highlights for the young andyoung at heart.

Blast off with a morning visit to thetop of the Banespa Building to see justhow big the city is. Often called SoPaulos very own Empire State Building

the Edifcio Altino Arantes, betterknown by the name of its previousowner, Banespa opened in 1947as a symbol of the fast-growing cityseconomic might. The striking viewsfrom the observation deck, accessedfrom the 33rd oor of the 161-meter-tall building, never fail to impressvisitors. Views, while free, are daytime

only; the building is only open duringnormal business hours.

Then, learnhow much funscience can beat the kookyC a t a v e n t oC u l t u r a le d u c a t i o n a lcenter (see

picture on theleft). Located

in a Victorian-era structurereminiscent of

Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends,Catavento Cultural is chock-full ofinteractive, hands-on exhibits andeducational activities for children andadults alike. Subjects covered includespace, wildlife, geography, the human

body and society. They are presented inaction-lled, engaging fashion for thelittle ones.

Afterwards, learn a bit of local

history at the Museu Paulista da USP(commonly known as the Museu doIpiranga). Modeled after the palaceand gardens at Versailles, the gorgeous,

purpose-built Museu Paulista occupiesthe promontory where Brazilianindependence from Portugal was

peacefully, if loudly, proclaimed byDom Pedro I in 1822. The landscapedgardens provide a refreshing respitefrom the surrounding urban chaos,while the ornate museum itself

afliated with the University of SoPaulo educates visitors in the historyof the city and nation via portraiture,antique vehicles, housewares andinformational installations. Ticket

includes entrance to the nearby Museude Zoologia (Zoology Museum). Letthe children work off some energy inthe gorgeously landscaped gardens ofParque da Independncia.

Next, walk over to the nearbySo Paulo Aquarium and get a loadof the sea life. Located, strangelyenough, in a working-class residentialneighborhood, the So Paulo Aquariumis always a hit with the kids. The self-

proclaimed largest aquarium in LatinAmerica contains more than 300species of marine life.

And if the familys still not tuckeredout, hop the subway across town tothe expertly designed Museu do Futebol

Iguau Falls

My husband Todd and I haverecently gone on a weekend trip to Fozdo Iguau (in the state of Paran), inthe south of Brazil and on the borderwith both Paraguay and Argentina.

Upon rst seeing the Iguau Falls, allTodd could manage was Poor NiagaraFalls.

The Iguau Falls are, unquestionably,one of the worlds great natural

phenomena. To describe their beautyand power is a tall order, but for starterscast out any ideas that Iguau is somekind of Niagara Falls transplanted southof the equator compared to Iguau,with its total of 275 falls that cascadeover a precipice 3km wide, Niagara isa ripple.

But its not the falls alone that makeIguau so special: the vastsurrounding subtropicalnature reserve in Brazil the

Parque Nacional do Iguau(www.cataratasdoiguacu.com.br), in Argentina theParque Nacional Iguaz(www.iguazuargentina.com)

is a timeless haunt that eventhe hordes of tourists fail todestroy.

Every year, tens ofthousands of visitors fromaround the world try toevaluate the sheer dimensionof this natural miracle a

collection of more than twohundred cascades thunderingover an 80m cliff andusually fail. However you spell it Iguaz, Iguau or Iguassu the Guaranname, translating as Big Water, issomething of an understatement.

The falls are surrounded by lushtropical forest thats home to more than2000 species of ora, over 500 birdspecies and approximately 80 differentmammals.

The city (Foz do Iguau) is oneof Brazils most-frequented touristdestinations. Most tourists are Braziliansand Argentines, but Canadians,Americans, British, Germans, Italians,

French, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean,Japanese and Chinese tourists are alsonumerous.

The city has about 100 hotels andinns.

Main attractions:

Iguau Falls, which has a fow capacity equalto three times that o Niagara Falls. Part o the alls

is on the Brazilian side. Others are on the Argentineside. Garganta do Diabo (Devils Throat inPortuguese) is the tallest o the alls, which is 97m (318 t) high.

Parque Nacional do Iguau (Iguau NationalPark), in both Brazil and Argentina, where thealls are. It is protected by the IBAMA (BrazilianInstitute o Environment and Renewable Natural

Resources).

Itaipu Dam, the third largest generator ohydro-electric power in the world, in the Paranariver, between Brazil and Paraguay.

The Trplice Fronteira (Triple Border) locationwhere Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet. Eachside has its own Marco (landmark).

The Omar Ibn Al-Khattab mosque, thelargest in Latin America

The Bird Park (Parque das Aves), which eatures

a collection o wild birds, and the Bosque Guaran,the citys zoo

Other than the Iguau Falls, the ItaipuDam is a must see! It produces about20% of Brazils electricity needs, andemploys (directly and indirectly) about5,000 Iguauenses. Many Iguacuenseswork in the neighboring city of Ciudaddel Este in Paraguay, which is a duty-

free market. All trade between Braziland Paraguay uses the FriendshipBridge (called Ponte da Amizade inBrazil). Another bridge, the FraternityBridge (Ponte da Fraternidade, or PonteTancredo Neves, in Brazil), connectsFoz do Iguau with its Argentineneighbor, Puerto Iguaz. The FraternityBridge, however, is far less important

than the Friendship Bridge.The city is strategical, due

to its position in Mercosur,

and it is expected that itsimportance will increaseeven more following theformation of the UNASUR(Union of South American

Nations). Foz do Iguau hasfew industries apart fromelectrical energy generation;most are textile-related.Because of the importanceof tourism, domestic andinternational crisis canaffect the citys economy by

reducing tourist numbers andby bringing fewer consumersto Ciudad del Este. Denitely

a must visit! And heres a travel tip:While there, do not miss the chance ofdining at the top oor restaurant with

The Name, Little LeagueMost respondents had a high comort level

with the name Little League. One respondentwas concerned that it was too associated withBaseball, and another because it refected theidea o an organized league rather than the morerecreational aspects o Little League.

Conclusions:LL cannot be a static activity. It has certainly

developed over the years in terms o number osports and accommodating the participation ogirls. However, it has not grown adequately interms o the number o participants.

Soccer:With soccer, this last semester we have had a

number o assistants that spoke very rudimentaryEnglish, but next semester their English will bemuch better.

In this last semester we have been able tosegregate the 5 and 6 year old soccer players so thatcan develop skills commensurate with their age,and where Fathers will not yell at them!

For older children we now have a specictraining program developed or ages 7 13, andare developing a manual that will be provided tochildren at sign-up.

General:We will encourage our participants to bring their

riends (and parents) along with them to LL sign-upso that our numbers will expand organically.

We also expect our contacts with the privateschools (Visconde de Porto Seguro in additionto the our mentioned above) to provide moreparticipants.

We married in 1987 andsoon after took our rst transfer to MauiHawaii.not a bad rst movethoughsince we were also expecting our rstchild, the distance from grandparentsin Switzerland and New York at times,seemed unbearable!

After three glorious years in Hawaiiat the Stouffer Wailea Beach Resort,I was expecting daughter number two

and retired from the hotel business andwe moved to St. Petersburg, FL whereGil was reopening the historic VinoyResort on Tampa Bay. From there it was

back to DC, then Orlando, then Atlanta.

I worked part time in advertising salesfor Washington Families Magazineand Atlanta Parent Magazine, with ashort stint at Golf Week Magazine inOrlando.

A year after Hurricane Katrina did itsjob on New Orleans, with Alessandraon her way to college in Boston; Gil,

Nicola and I moved to the city (friendsand family thought we were crazy!)and almost immediately fell in love.the lovely old mansions and oak trees

along St. Charles Avenue, the peopleand their respect and pride for theircity and yes, the New Orleans Saints-can you say SUPERBOWL? and NewOrleans Hornets-CP3-Chris Paul-itwas great watching you play!., anddid we mention Mardi Gras!!?? Truly,it was love. We didnt think we wouldever leave the city, but opportunityknocked for Gil to become CountryManager for Marriott Hotels in Brazil.Who could pass up that opportunity?

With daughters out on their own, weseized the chance.Since November 2012 we have been

living in Sao Paulo in the Jardim Europaarea. I spend my time attempting

to learn Portuguese, playing tennis,hosting the International NewcomersClub Book Club, traveling back toUSA to check in with kids and parents,and working on American Society

projects. Most recently, I Co-chairedthe Annual AmSoc Gala- a great eventthat promoted fellowship among ourranks and raised lots of money forthe funding of AmSoc activities andour two featured charities, Projeto Soland SPACE. Ive also helped out with

Little League registration, the EasterParty and the Angel Party.

I encourage AmSoc members to getinvolved in AmSoc activities. It is agreat way to make friends, to network,to contribute to the local communityand to stay busy!
