This Ship for World Youth Alumni Association Brazil report contains four parts. The first part is

a brief introduction to what has happened in the past year with the SWYAABrasil, the second

    part presents the 6th

Brazilian participation in the Ship for World Youth Program (SWY23) and

the third part shows the events, activities and reunions that happened in 2011 and the last

part talks a little about some projects for the future of our association.

    Section 1 Introduction

The year of 2011 was definitely a year of struggle, joy and hard work for everybody

who has been on the ship or has had a little bit of contact with the Japanese culture and their

people. First of all, we would like to express our feelings for everything that Japan went

through in 2011 with the happenings of March. And then, we would also like to express our

admiration for such a passionate and organized people as the Japanese. You managed to stand

up after a great tragedy and rebuild buildings, ports, houses in such a short time, and all thatcould nothave been achieved if it werent for all the love and hope you all have in your hearts

and helped you move on. Managing to keep the SWY Program alive is something most

countries would not have been able to do, which shows even more how Japan is the perfect

    country to be hosting it.

I cannot put into words what it means to us, Brazilians, having been invited two years

in a row for the SWY Program. We are glad to be part of it and we will keep doing our best

every year to represent our country and make up for all that has been invested on us.

Brazil taking part of SWY23, 12 new ex-PYs for us coming straight from the oven,

hungry for conquering the world, finally achieving our First Official Post-Program Activity and

being part of SWY24 as well shows that we have had a hard work year, and we are ahead of

another full year. Our hopes are really high for our Alumni Association to keep growing and we

are looking into being able to organize more Post-Program Activities and more events to bring

people together and give back to the society a little of what we have received through this

    program.

Section 2 Participation on SWY 23 by Adriano Lira

After three years, SWY had a Brazilian delegation in the 2011 edition. The participants

were chosen by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. For the first time, all the delegates were

participants of a government program called Prouni (Programa Universidade Para Todos,

University for All Program, in English). Prouni provides scholarships in private universities forthe students who reach the highest grades in the National High School Exam, taken annually.

None of the SWY 23 Brazilian delegates had travelled abroad before. So, SWY was a

wonderful opportunity to learn with people from different cultures and religions, and to show

their own background to the other PYs.

To show how important SWY experience is in our lives, we decided to share

    testimonials of some participants:

Talking about SWY is a hard task. There is no way to leave our emotions out of the

speech and, yet, it seems we are never being fair enough to all the experiences and the

knowledge we acquired and how important it really was. There is this kind of magical part

about being a PY, which is the personal growth we experience only by sharing the most basic

way of interaction of the human being with the other participants, the conversation, arguing

about our realities and discovering more about theirs.

I can say by myself that it operated a complete change in my way of thinking. Being in

touch with people from many countries, many cultures, made me more open not only to accept

the differences, but to absorb anything good that these people had to teach me in their

particularities, in demand of building a global citizenship spirit that would allow me to become

a person who understands how wonderful the world we live in is and how I could possibly

contribute with my little piece of knowledge and hard work for the common good of the society

that I am part of.(Eduardo Barana)

The comeback, after almost two months away from home, seemed to be a very hard

and emotionally painful task. Leaving a global family of friends who, just like you, are willing to

change paradigms for a better world, is not something you can do overnight.

Due to that I sincerely thank the Japanese Government for the effort put on to hold the

SWY Program. They are really investing in the power of dreaming and believingthat is within

the youth. It is a gift to the world: batches of potential world leaders. And their onboard

preparation studies is a proof that it is being done the right way.

All of us returned to ourcountry sure that the power of dreaming and believinghas

awakened and grown stronger. Now we can do something to improve our present and mold a

new future for our communities through education and sustainable social responsibility.

    (Ricardo Subirana)

What does it take to be an Ex-PY? Technically, if you fit some requirements and are

lucky enough to be selected, just get in at Ana InterContinental Tokyo and out at Yokohama

International Port Terminal. But, in fact, that doesnt answer the question. Being an Ex-PY goesthrough living some of the best days of your whole life. Not alone, but with people from many

different countries, backgrounds, cultures, knowledge and so on. As an Ex-PY, I can truthfully

testify that besides being a once in a life time experience, you gotta be aware about how the

SWY program changes your life forever.

My life began to change as soon as the very first night on board the ship Fuji Maru. It

was January 21st and the administrator of the 23rd Ship for World Youth, Mr. Hiroki

MATSUBAYASHI, gave us a remarkable welcome speech. At some moment he said, insistently:

This program is an opportunity to begin everything all over again. This night, if you want, you

can be born again. Those meaningful words touched me intensely. Nowadays, anytime I get

myself in front of tough challenges of life, all I have to do to go ahead is to call for the inner

motivation and inspiration given to me while I was a Participating Youth of SWY23. (Rodrigo

    Matos Pereira)

One year ago, I left my home port to explore far-away seas For sure, it was the

biggest journey in my life. Making sure I didnt carry in my luggageprejudice and fear, I left my

country for 51 days, and these were the most multicultural days I've ever had. Where else can

you listen to a foreigner anthem by the morning, discuss cross cultural understanding before

lunch, learn the rules of tea ceremony by the afternoon and do stargazing by night? The

richness of the SWY environment is something one won't find anywhere else. Every sunrise,

every port of call, every visit we pay to facilities, schools, museums... these things will never

come back, but they won't be forgotten. The SWY spirit never ends and I'm lucky to say that

these people who once were with me on the ship are forever part of my life.(Amanda Freitas)

Program aimed at interested applicants held at the Embassy of Japan in Ottawa on August 18,

, while Leonardo and Luciana stayed throughout the week helping the

delegates. The ex-PYs solved some delegations doubts, explained the activities on board and

presented the SWY 22 Greece National Presentation what was very important to show them

a good example of a well-succeeded NP, and some things they should use to show an

unforgettable project to the other PYs.

The other activities on the training included icebreaking sessions, lectures about

Japanese culture, and a visit to the Japanese Embassy in Brasilia. The delegates started to think

and plan all the projects they have to hold onboard the ship: seminars, club activities,

    presentations, etc.

    SWYAABrasil Post Program Activity

SWYAABrasil has had many difficulties to organize events and activities involving ex-

participants, because Brazil is such a big country that it makes difficult for us even to

communicate with each other. So, Adriano Lira (SWY 23) had the idea of a blood donation

campaign: it would be an activity that many people could do, in their own cities. Besides,

every single person who donates blood is helping directly to save lives.

Then, Leonardo Kajioka (SWY 18), Tamy Guimares (SWY 20), Adriano Lira, Bruno

Santos, Matheus Romero, Ricardo Subirana, Rodrigo Matos, Luciana Yonekawa (SWY 23)

and some of their friends went to a close hemocenter to make the change:

Section 4 - Future SWYAABrasil activities

With the arrival of 10 new ex-PYs next March, we expect to have our SWYAA Activities

warmed up. There was a significant change in the course of our Association since the SWY23

ex-PYs joined us and we hope this grows even more now.

We have had some ideas of Activities that can be done throughout the country like the

Blood Donation Activity, so ex-PYs from all parts of Brazil will be able to help. Here are some of

    these ideas:

Book donation: all ex-PYs would gather some old/used books they have in their housesand take them to the nearest library or school, so other people will be able to benefit

    from them;

Clothes donation: donating clothes we dont use anymore for people who are in needof them, especially in the winter time.
